Play Gun Nac on NES OP, fun and easy shmup, no nonsense. Otherwise SEGA CD and TurboGrafx-CD are my go to for shmups. Keio Flying Squadron and Lords of Thunder are great.

I think i will limit my search to old systems like SNES, arcade stuff seems too hard to emulate on my end while some of the suggestions are on the ballpark of 400mb-1GB (that will surely not run on this system)

i am looking for lightweight things mostly as i am playing on a potato computer, my gaming pc died and DOOM is good and all but i can only play one game for so long

look at the old touhou games like 6 7 8 9 10 11 and the older ones 1-5 emulated but its like nes almost

With 16 bit emulators you have on the Genesis Thunder Force III and Elemental Master. Both of those are great and the difficulty isn't over bearing. Otherwise I'd also recommend Wings of Wor/Gynoug, Biohazard Battle, Thunder Force IV, Eliminate Down, Gleylancer, Hellfire, and Phelios.

PC engine/turbo grafx typically got the best ports, genesis/mega drive had some good ones too. SNES ports were generally pretty bad. I think PC engine emulation is pretty good now, same goes for genesis. if i knew you i'd lend you my turbo grafx mini and mega drive mini 1& 2, maybe if you can find any of these somewhere for cheap it'd be a good option.

anyway, recs for someone trying to get into retro shmups are the 3 turbo grafx games blazing lazers, air zonk and lords of thunder. a genesis rec is gleylancer. BZ & AZ are pretty basic but you should be able you get your first 1cc on one of them with some effort. lords of thunder is just badass with a lot of variety, gleylancer also has a good deal of variety with it's take on gradius options.

Guardian Force is also one of the really small Saturn games. For whatever reason those three are significantly smaller than most others

Name is literally in the image. Android Assault: Revenge of Bari-Arm, one of my favorite shmups on SCD next to Keio and Lords of Thunder. If you like it also check out Hyper Duel on Saturn which has a similar concept, except you can transform into a mech at anytime in that one

why do PC engine games vary from few MB to 300+MB per game?

      Anonymous

CD games are hundreds of megs
HuCards max at 1MB without a (second) mapper

      Anonymous

It's the CD games and they technically should be separated from the Turbo Chip/HuCard games the way it is with SEGA CD since they required an add-on and a BIOS if you're emulating

Man, Recca is so trash, no clue what people see in this game. Awful weapon system, horrible boss design, the scrolling is way too fast just for the sake of it, tons of slowdown and flicker, huge bright red flashes every time you hit a boss. Just a disaster of a game.

      Anonymous

      You got that right

the only appeal of the game is
      >OMG THIS HAS TONS OF SPRITES AND IT GOES SUPER FAST
      >ON THE HEKKIN ENN EE ESSS!!!!

and the NES is my favourite console. The game plays pretty fricking bad. Most of the levels are just sit in one spot and let the weapons do all the work for you and only time you need to move is to dodge weapons pick-up

only interesting mechanic is the charge but I hate how some bosses are designed primarly with that in mind
