its actually a good idea to prevent leaks. There were already copies that got sent out early. Of course they should remove it after the game launches though for preservation.

For nostalgia and to convince you that the coaster isn't just a toaster that does online checks to allow you to play the game. If the game was on the disc you could just play it off the disc but no, you need to install the game with an online permission prompt or day one patch that gives you that permission.
