It's really fricking good, has a lot of SOUL. Unironically, I feel the same way I did playing SMRPG back in 1996.
The fishing minigame is excellent and gets difficult after the 4th or 5th fishing point. The wheels minigame has great depth and is fricking confusing at first but really good after you figure out some good strats.
The gameplay is great and you don't just go grinding enemies to level up. it feels natural as you run into enemies and slowly level up and you are the correct level when you fight the boss. The story is really good and anybody who says the music is boring can go get fricked. They even hired the famous classic JRPG composer from Chrono Trigger.

This game is the definition of front-loaded effort. The last time the game puts any effort in is when going to the other world, and then the game proceeds to drag its feet for another 10 hours before blueballing you from even fighting the big bad.

And what fricking changes? Nothing. Not a god damn fricking thing. In Ending 1 you beat up whats-her-name and he goes to dock with Resh'an afterwards. In Ending 2 you actually get to fight him and what happens? He STILL goes off to pack fudge with Resh'an. Nothing fricking changes. It's the most I've been insulted by an ending in a good damn while. Frick this game. I could've forgiven the mediocre gameplay because of the admittedly great presentation as long as it stuck the landing. But it couldn't do it, did the exact opposite in fact. The journey is not worth that particular destination.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Chained Echoes was actually better. Sea of Stars is worse than being outright bad, it's just boring after a point. It played it so safe it was insulting. At Chained Echoes' worst, it's offensively bad to the point I can b***h about it fervently, but I was rarely bored playing it.
Didn't expect to say that, especially to the media darling, but here we are.

When you get your final party member and realize "Oh, that's really it." And this is a spoiler if you care, I don't mean the 9th inning glassman who exists solely to fill that open slot, I mean the Alchemist. And that is around maybe halfway through the game.
I'll give CE shit all day for becoming formulaic after you find your preferred strategy to circumvent or work around the Overdrive bar, but at least you have to do that much. And it has a problem dropping characters on you at the last second, extremely inopportunely to actually using them, but at least it does.
That should tell you my opinion of SoS, man.

I enjoyed it. It starts off really fricking slow though. Music was good and I bothered to get the real ending. I liked Garl, but I guess other people didn't. Base game was pretty easy, but I liked that you could tweak it and make it harder with those relics or whatever.

The two main characters have the personality of cardboard, they're so boring. But then you have everyone in the game jerking themselves off over how amazing Garl is, while personally I found him really annoying. The other characters are pretty good though.
Overall, I liked it. The gameplay is fun, if easy - there's no reason to cook food at the camp if you've got a healer in your party and you can heal to full health at every campfire you come across (so just backtrack to your last campfire to heal if you're low on health, enemies don't respawn). Music is fantastic and thankfully the writing isn't as reddit as The Messenger, theres no fourth wall breaking apart from one character who talks about RPG tropes.

Chained Echoes is better than this (in terms of fun, story and gameplay, the visuals and audio might've been better though), wasn't even nominated on The Game Awards, this feels so bad man.

Yes, no. Play the SNES and PS1 JRPGs if you want to experience what this game is trying to ape. I recommended Terranigma and Alundra. They're more action than RPG so they're easier to get into but they share idiosyncrasies with SNES RPGs like the story, progression, music and the graphics.
