deus ex success was largerly due to spector leading the project in a completely different city.
romero ran out of the dallas office, spector started an office in austin.
romero is listed as a level designer for anachronox in the credits, i doubt he had much input.

the damage from daikatana was already done, the game only sold like 40k, they were just able to get anachronox and deus ex out the door before budget cuts occured

Yeah, the two games that weren't generic first-person shooters turned out well. He shouldn't have tried to compete with Carmack while still relying on Carmack's tech.

ion dallas closed right after anachronox. warrens office was allowed to stay open and made two more games.

      >After a few tense minutes Romero won handily but Carmack calmly reneged on the agreement stating that their deal was oral and non-legally binding
      >Carmack then loaded Romero into his car and promptly drove to an animal shelter that was unfortunately familiar to the two of them, being the very same that put down the office cat Mitzi at Carmack's request for having the audacity to urinate on his leather couch
      >Romero asked Carmack what they were doing at the location to which Carmack coldly replied "You have become unproductive and a net negative to our workflow John, I am merely removing you from my office and my life"

I recently played Sigil and some modded Quake levels and Sigil gameplay is so far ahead it's ludicrous. In fact, Quake while being great for architectural design has this freedom of movement that actually makes the gameplay worse. In Sigil, you feel shoulder-to-shoulder with demons, like in a telephone booth of hell. You get out of one situation and into the next by finding and shooting a switch, rinse and repeat. But it works so well. In fact it's better than any modern FPS but this is the case with most of high quality Doom mods as well.

tldr: better movement and ballistics actually made FPS games worse and were an evolutionary dead end.

      > better movement and ballistics actually made FPS games worse and were an evolutionary dead end.
this is one part everybody misses about the few pros of daikatana as almost nobody played it and who did shit on it. If you go for agility the level up system makes movement feel really fricking good

Developed separately from the original game, the Game Boy Color version of Daikatana was designed as an adventure game at the request of creator John Romero. It was released in Europe in September 2000 and in Japan as a download for the Nintendo Power peripheral in May 2001; a planned North American release was cancelled due to the original version's negative reputation. The game received generally positive reviews, with critics regarding it as superior to the original Daikatana.
