Well yeah. The point of DS2 SOTFS is to realize that the whole quest was a fricking spook and you shouldn't sacrifice yourself for some dumb bullshit.
The Bearer doesn't free manking though, only himself. Countless cycles later the whole thing in DS3 still goes down, meanwhile the Bearer chills in the sidelines
I unironically prefer having a place in 2's storyline.
Gwyn is a seething coward and deserves no sympathy. Both for him fricking up humanity but also raising son as a twink. Aldia at least tried to fix this curse crap the best he could. Him, Vendrick and Ivory King are biggest Chads of the series.
No, Aldia and Vendrick were fricking insane lunatics who caused enormous suffering and caused a giant war that destroyed their own country in pursuit of personal immortality. Why do you think the giants were so angry? Why do you think the golems look like giants? Why does the "ancient dragon" have the soul of a giant, and why do such souls harm Vendrick? Why are there humans with holes carved in them to resemble the giants? Vendrick and Aldia were seeking to tame and own the power of the first flame, and didn't care how many people they had to butcher to get what they wanted. And still they failed. Aldia carved a hole in himself, and touched the fire, only then to understand that the first flame is not a SOURCE of power, but a consumer of it, and he was drawn in and nearly destroyed. This isn't to say that anything he says to you, the player, is incorrect or should not be headed, but his actions in life are absolutely not commendable.
It would be one thing if they "only" started a war of aggression that ultimately destroyed their country just to do magic research. But they also mutilated their own constituents, and plotted to try to steal what they thought was the arch stone of all life.
>finds a burning mouth to hell >builds his castle on it to guard it >finds a fragment of the Abyss >realizes that it is the embodiment of fear >shelters and cares for it with gentle guidance and helps it blossom into a good person that genuinely loves him >when Chaos looms, he's the first to step up and hold it back >his loyal knights wait for the moment where they can happily give their lives to free him from his burden >has a bunch of big silly cats as pets
He was unironically too based for his own good.

>>IGN: In all of FromSoftware's soulslike games you have served as director, with the exception of Dark Souls II. If we want to revisit that for a moment, I wanted to ask you what it was like overseeing the game, what you think in general about Dark Souls II, and whether you might pass on the director's baton to someone else in the future.
: As far as Dark Souls II is concerned, I personally think it was a really great project for us, and I think without it we wouldn't have had many of the connections and ideas with which we've carried on the rest of the series. I think especially having a different director for that project, we were able to have different ideas and make those connections that we wouldn't have experienced otherwise. So, there is no way to say how or if the series would have continued in the way it did without Dark Souls II. So, looking back, I feel very satisfied with the work we did. As for my role as supervisor, however, I think I could have handled it a little better in relation to my contribution.

xisters... did IGN lie to us?
this was supposed to be our validation...
Honestly probably true. Not in the sense that DkS2 saved the company, but it was a strong success at the right time to really help them secure the breakout success of Dark Souls. >probably lower budget than the others and the whole B TEAM meme or whatever >still sold a shitload (relative to the sales they were used to at the time) and they were able to produce MULTIPLE DLCs for it as well as a quick re-release >bought time for them to finish Bloodborne >bridged the gap to DkS3 which sold an absolutely ludicrous amount and secured the company's finances
From there From was set. They had made a beloved trilogy of games that were all breakout successes that sold more than the last. Then DkS3, Sekiro, Elden Ring was a quick three-tap of absolutely insane sales for a studio of their size, budget, and dev cycle.
>AIEE why do real fans hate our shitty butchering of the lore in the sequel?????
this is why everyone considered DS2 secondaries subhuman for nearly a decade
>ds2 and sekiroyo are the only games (didn't play ac6) that use new from's engine
wish they could give us a proper ds2 remaster with THAT lighting and que QoL stuff. what a shame.

>Miyazaki adds that having different directors also helped the series as a whole. “We were able to have that different impetus and have those different ideas and make those different connections that we otherwise might not have had.” He goes so far as to say that “there’s really no way of telling how or if the series would have continued the way it did without Dark Souls 2.”

3 was just rehashed 1, with the same exact framework as DeS and 1.

I know it's painful xis... but we have to cope.... WAAAAAAAAAAAH
I still think how Aldia's ending of DaS2 gives a more satisfying ending to the saga than the endings of DaS3, the most interesting of DaS3 was the one about stealing the flame and the one about saving London, but this one never elaborated on anything nor did we ever know more about London and we never will, thanks for nothing Miyasaki.
And Aldia's ending, despite not being closed or completely happy, gives some hope to the world.
Plot-wise 2 would have made more sense if it came after 3
Think >Game 1 has the simple choice to relink the fire or accept the dark >Game 2 is a direct sequel that occurs after the flame has been linked numerous times to stave off the dark at the expense of the world's health, and in one ending hints the fire will naturally return after an age of dark >Game 3 occurs in the distant future after cycles of fire and dark have passed, many kingdoms have risen and been forgotten, and the old lords have been forgotten in name but continue to reincarnate in soul
