Wind Waker was popular enough to spawn several games around its art style including the great Four Swords Adventrues.
Maybe Miyamoto is actually moronic?
After the initial wave of teenagers saying it sucks because they thought they'd look childish saying it was good, people generally liked to loved the artstyle.
I quite liked it and I don't mind that it got spinoff games in the style, but I'm glad it didn't stick for mainline 3d Zeldas.
Ok but you're still in the minority and possibly insecure about your maturity.
As a one off in the mainline series there's nothing wrong with it. If TP, SS and BOTW all had the same art style maybe I'd agree with you.
Or maybe tendies are so brand loyal will just always eat up whatever shit has their branding on it and say it’s the best thing ever? Oh yeah it is that because you homosexuals have proven it time and time again
Wow, what an interesting fact I’ve never heard off.
My turn: Did you know that the Mario 2 we got in the West is a completely different game from the japanese Mario 2?!? :O
I remember thinking it was an elaborate joke by the news site I read. I had liked the way the space world demo looked so much I had printed out pictures and put them on my wall, so when it hit me it was real I was pretty disappointed. Fortunately I gave it a shot and loved it.
it's the most soulful zelda ever created that's why there's so much controversy about it, you need a more refined taste to enjoy it unlike ooc which appeals to every cum guzzling homosexual and women
I remember watching the first ever wind waker trailer when it was announced. I cringed so fricking hard, my disappointment was immense lol. Double so because at the time we had this cool tech demo of link fighting gannondorf in a realistic graphics style.
It kinda grew on me when it came out, but I didn't like the game during my first playthrough. I specifically remember at one point thinking "this game is so fricking easy, what happened?" in regards to the dungeons. Beating Ocarina and Majora's Mask had been a huge challenge and super satisfying for kid me so I was severely disappointed.
The only people who hate wind waker are millennial redditors who can't accept the fact that all zelda games are made for literal children. >n...nooooo muh heckin ocarina of time was le dark!!
have a nice day.
The actually article paints it even worse, since it makes Aonuma out to be a sneak who knew his idea was going to get shitcanned and Miyamoto repeatedly went "you can still go for a different art style" after Aonuma stopped hiding the look from him.
He wasn't shown the art-style until the game was pretty deep into development and ultimately trusted Aonuma since everyone else on the team loved it >“If I had gone and talked to him from the very beginning, I think he would’ve said ‘How is that Zelda?'." Aonuma said in the magazine. “Miyamoto had trouble letting go of the realistic Link art style until the very end. >“At some point, he had to give a presentation against his will. That’s when he said something to me like, ‘You know, it’s not too late to change course and make a realistic Zelda.'”
>muh soul >muh better age
A better aged and soulful game wouldn't have had fans b***hing for an HD version of it
OoT's remake came out of literally nowhere and people STILL prefer the original as a source port on PC
I can't speak for other people but for me it's the overly simple dungeons and how exploring the sea is underwhelming. You can also tell certain parts of the game are rushed and incomplete like the missing third dungeon and old Hyrule being nothing more than a tease.
I still love the game though, those are just my 2 cents.
Too easy. One of my first video games, not even Zelda games, was Zelda 1. I was lukewarm on OoT and MM when they happened, but gave Wind Waker a try anyway it released. "Wow, this is just OoT again but even easier". So I tapped out of Zelda and didn't really look back because I could see the series had decided to go in a direction that wasn't for me.
I commented at the time I felt Zelda games needed more action. A friend scoffed, "You just want Dynasty Warriors Zelda!" Zelda Dynasty Warriors became a running gag in-joke after that. My reaction to Hyrule Warriors reveal trailer was a solid 15 minutes of laughter.
it's blatantly unfinished and full of missed potential. fully explorable sunken hyrule, mini-dungeons and islands and enemies scattered across the map to fill it in, two scrapped dungeons, etc. like, it was so close to being something really noteworthy, but they rushed it out the door and now it just feels like a shorter oot with a giant empty ocean.
I don't think its art style fits Zelda. I think it's a great art style. Could've been used to spearhead an entire franchise, but I 100% agree with the initial fan reception. Imagine if Breath of the Wild used the Link's Awakening remake's aesthetic. That's basically what Wind Waker did. It wasn't a spin off. There wasn't some mainline game to ground fans, and allow for WW to experiment. THIS was the mainline game. And this game came after Majora's Mask, and Ocarina, which, while not gritty, and realistic, had an established fantasy tone and visual.
It was just jarring, and potentially worrisome from a fan perspective. Was THIS what Zelda was from now on?? No more of what was very clearly working and appreciated?
>“If I had gone and talked to him from the very beginning, I think he would’ve said ‘How is that Zelda?’ Miyamoto had trouble letting go of the realistic link art style until the very end. At some point, he had to give a presentation against his will. That’s when he said something to me like ‘You know, it’s not too late to change course and make a realistic Zelda.”
Miyamoto was right and did nothing wrong. Wind Waker was hated and relegated to DS games. Meanwhile Twilight Princess and the crossbow training cashgrab sold like hotcakes.
Aonuma was making a game for himself and nobody else. Nintendo was pretty aware that Zelda sold more in America, and would even make Link look more mature as the series went on to appeal to this. (Compare LttP Link to Zelda 2, for instance). Then Aonuma gets his big chance and fricks it all up, and when his cute big eyed cat faced boy is rejected even by Japanese gamers, he cries foul and says Japan just doesn't play video games anymore, it's clearly not HIS fault this happened.
Just FYI, Toon Link was never cut from Smash. Young Link however, was.
I love Miyamoto, but he is old as frick. Seriously the dad mind of videogames. Much like Hayao Miyazaki, we only hear these guys out for the dad mind comments they produce on subjects.
Honestly I wish Tezuka was less humble and spoke up about Zelda more often.
The dude had way more impact on the franchise than Miyamoto did.
Zelda is divided into the Tezuka era, Aonuma era, and Fujibayashi era.
And he would be right to cringe. As decent as it is as far as raw gameplay is concerned, Wind Waker's visuals and themes restrict Zelda to a less interesting world. Ocarina of Time (the version with red blood), mixed with Twilight Princess, is the direction the franchise needs to go. Even Breath of the Wild feels too light most of the time. Other than parts of Hyrule Castle, Castle Town being flattened, and a few other locations throughout the world, it doesn't feel like it's in immediate peril. The excitement and tension was said and done long ago, and now you're running errands and goofing off in some kid's shallow, 5 minute daydream adventure.
Twilight Princess nails most dungeons, like Arbiter's grounds, but then the rest of the game is a bit too dreary. I want some real thematic contrast that we haven't had since Ocarina of Time. Not depressing all the time like Twilight Princess, not vapid like Breath of the Wild, and not overly light hearted 90% of the game like Wind Waker. Something more grounded and tangible, with a good mix of light and fairly heavy themes throughout. A more serious world that really demands your attention (without having an anxiety-inducing time limit like Majora's Mask). And I'm not saying it should be edgy, M rated, or have a heavy T rating. Barely scraping the lower end of a T rating, or going to the limits of E 10+ would be a good place.
You typed too many words to basically say that you need Zelda to be a mature video game for mature video gamers such as yourself. Will get Bobby Kotick on the phone to ensure each new Zelda will get assault rifles and bloom/gloom lighting and textures everywhere. And WW did have dark elements, it had nothing to do with the artstyle.
>muh dark fantasy world, cartoon world can't be depressed like me unga bunga
What changed my outlook on Wind Waker was the E3 trailer they used a year before release.
Seeing moves like Hurricane, the parries and Link being able to wield other weapons aside from his sword is what retained my interest and hype. Upon playing though, I wasn't impressed with the dungeon layout or their music and felt the ability use the enemy's weapons was heavily underutilized (even in BoTW that's still the case).
What I enjoyed most about Wind Waker was the enemy interactivity and how they were spacially aware of the world around them. If Link tried getting in close on a Moblin he would get pushed back for trying to close the gap. Even if they were disarmed, enemies weren't completely defenseless and if you left them alone long enough they'd dash towards the nearest weapon. It was funny seeing a Moblin knock an ally back only to have a stunned look on their face for what they did. Link himself was given combo routes depending on how you tilted the analog, which while basic still allowed you different avenues for how you wanted to approach an encounter.
Wind Waker was rough and rushed, but one thing it did right was giving us enemies that were fun to fight and interact with, except maybe Darknuts.
OK, Wind Waker. I get a lot of requests for this one. Back when it was revealed, if you can believe this, everyone hated the graphics. The graphics are actually pretty cool, it's like you're playing a cartoon. But GODDAMN, if it's a cartoon it's like one played in slow motion! Link moves so SLOW on those stubby little legs of his... like a doped up snail covered in molasses. Getting in your boat is no better. If you're not going in the direction of the wind, you aren't going anywhere. So what do you do? Well first you open the menu... equip the rod... then you gotta hold the direction of the wind song, not time it like you'd THINK you have to do, then the game plays the exact same song you just played. THEN you can change direction, and watch Link confused at the sky every time. FRICK. Is all the song and dance really necessary?! It's an actual song and dance! And don't think you can avoid this, you'll need it to find the triforce pieces which are scattered all over the world... though good luck finding them, since it's all the same MS paint blue!
And even if you KNOW where they are, guess what? You can't see them unless you pay this fat little dwarf guy 400 bucks to tell you where they are. 400 bucks! And there's 8 pieces! This is worse than that guy who sold me those old Atari games! Now there's nothing wrong with triforce pieces, in the Legend of Zelda you had to find 8 of them too. But they were in dungeons, full of monsters and dead ends and this weird grumble grumble guy. Not a little kid's scavenger hunt! What were they THINKING!?
Wind Waker? More like SHIT TAKER! The wind isn't the only thing that blows! I'd rather get buried under Dodongo dung! I'd rather get manhandled by Manhandla! I'd rather dig my own grave with Digdogger!
>Oh frick. We're so fricked. You guys fricked up so badly. Look at this shit! You guys have seen Grand Theft Auto 3 right? Halo?! THIS is our Zelda?! We went over this before with the Spaceworld 2000 presentation! We already fricked up by making Luigi's Mansion our big launch game... Frick it, I'm going home.
>Loves botw and ss that have the same style >Cringe at ww for having the superior style
This is what they call, too big to fail? I hope this frick gets a heart attack. Ganker will celebrate.
It is still cartoony. They should have been using twilight princess style or Hyrule Legends style for all their future games instead of the ugly colored garbage style they have been using.
>By the way, Aonuma-san, which of the past games in The Legend of Zelda series is your favourite?
>I'm often asked this question, but for me, my favourite is "the one I'm making now". When I start making something, I think about it every day from the time I wake up in the morning until I go to bed at night. So right now I'm working on Triforce of the Gods 2. >At this time of year, a lot of things are still not quite right. It's especially enjoyable since I became a producer to see them being put in place, and of course Miyamoto would come in and give me bad advice.
>and of course Miyamoto would come in and give me bad advice.
kek
>Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are successful in the West >This isn't good enough for racist Japs, it HAS to be popular in Nihon >Make the next game as le kawaii neko nyaa as possible changing the series >Everyone laughs and is confused >Oh shit! Change it back for the next game >Over-correct and make Twilight Princess grimdark and edgy cringe
Twilight Princess tries to have a melancholy atmosphere and succeeds in some places, the parts where it's eye-rolling is where it really just want to ape Majora's Mask and does terrible (interlopers cutscene) or when it drums up its own hype way too much with the epic fantasy shit (the bridge joust, Midna's siege on Hyrule Castle)
it's pretty over the top and you can tell the game lacks something of a solid identity because it's pandering so hard every other section or scene
>literally the reason for many long running franchises becoming pisseasy babby games >is a senior citizen that waves around a foam sword on stage >'cringes' over an artstyle for being childish
Miyamoto seems like the kind of boss to make corrections to your work just because he wanted the last word. I don't like a lot of what Aonuma has done to the franchise, but god it must suck to work for Miyamoto
I thought it looked fine.
It was everything else about WW that made me dislike it.
Why should I take the opinions of someone who makes a Popeye ripoff and refuses to give anybody in that universe any sort of character?
Wind Waker was popular enough to spawn several games around its art style including the great Four Swords Adventrues.
Maybe Miyamoto is actually moronic?
>Wind Waker was popular enough
Revisionism
Aonuma pushed for the artstyle hard in spite of nobody liking it
I liked it, and I'm the only person that matters.
This. You'll notice it got shafted to just mobile games, and eventually petered out around the early 2010s.
and that's why I love Numa. Gave me my favorite Zelda's to date. Shiggy needs to frick off already, not just from Zelda, from Nintendo.
Aonuma needs to frick off from life
Is that a female Link?
After the initial wave of teenagers saying it sucks because they thought they'd look childish saying it was good, people generally liked to loved the artstyle.
I quite liked it and I don't mind that it got spinoff games in the style, but I'm glad it didn't stick for mainline 3d Zeldas.
Oh hey, look, someone who was actually there as opposed to revisionist zoomers
I played and finished it
still think toon link style is too childish and out of style for a zelda game
Ok but you're still in the minority and possibly insecure about your maturity.
As a one off in the mainline series there's nothing wrong with it. If TP, SS and BOTW all had the same art style maybe I'd agree with you.
Yeah, it's not like they forced it as the art style for five more games or anything like that.
I suppose that's the reason they are still using that toon artstyle, right?
If only there was some reason they keep forcing the toon artystyle, but I can't quite figure out what it is...
>Wind Waker was popular
No it wasn't it literally killed the series TP was their hail mary to save it
>Wind Waker was popular enough to spawn several games around its art style including the great Four Swords Adventrues
I don't know the industry term but that was so forced it hurts. Nobody likes Toon Link besides the dangerously deluded.
>Nobody likes Toon Link besides the dangerously deluded.
> Kirbyposter
Or maybe tendies are so brand loyal will just always eat up whatever shit has their branding on it and say it’s the best thing ever? Oh yeah it is that because you homosexuals have proven it time and time again
You know that the sell numbers don't mean shit to a game quality right? Have you seen pokemon?
I still remember the negative reaction to toon link at the time, people were expecting something like in that tech demo here
Wow, what an interesting fact I’ve never heard off.
My turn: Did you know that the Mario 2 we got in the West is a completely different game from the japanese Mario 2?!? :O
you should pass away
The funny thing is that that tech demo looks horribly dated today
I remember thinking it was an elaborate joke by the news site I read. I had liked the way the space world demo looked so much I had printed out pictures and put them on my wall, so when it hit me it was real I was pretty disappointed. Fortunately I gave it a shot and loved it.
it's the most soulful zelda ever created that's why there's so much controversy about it, you need a more refined taste to enjoy it unlike ooc which appeals to every cum guzzling homosexual and women
so it begins, the subtle pre-shilling from Nintendo on Ganker regarding a WW release on Switch...noice

You will never fit in
has anyone in this thread(or board really) actually read more than the headline
I watched the youtube video about it
The headline had the funny meme word in it so most don't care beyond that.
The actually article paints it even worse, since it makes Aonuma out to be a sneak who knew his idea was going to get shitcanned and Miyamoto repeatedly went "you can still go for a different art style" after Aonuma stopped hiding the look from him.
aonuma is an idiot
all he needed to do was show miyamoto this
then show him the game with toon link
miyamoto would have been fine with it
Miyamoto was right and Ganker will never admit it because they're a bunch of zoomers with a hate boner for him
Reminder that TP was the best selling Zelda until BotW dropped. Even it's remake sold better than WW HD.
>Even it's remake sold better than WW HD
it didn't though
I mean SOLD. Most WW copies are WiiU bundles.
proof? And even if it was sold in a bundle, it still counts. People deliberately chose that bundle over others.
Imagine losing to fricking MM3D
everyone did when they saw that reveal trailer
I cringed too. Why did Miyamoto let it happen
He wasn't shown the art-style until the game was pretty deep into development and ultimately trusted Aonuma since everyone else on the team loved it
>“If I had gone and talked to him from the very beginning, I think he would’ve said ‘How is that Zelda?'." Aonuma said in the magazine. “Miyamoto had trouble letting go of the realistic Link art style until the very end.

OoT's remake came out of literally nowhere and people STILL prefer the original as a source port on PC
>frogposter
>abhorrent, moronic opinion
Every single time.
except this time, where they blew your ass out with based opinions.
Shut up dumb frogposter
take the time to put that booty back together
He's right though
Then why did he allow it to happen?
Unironically, why do anons NOT like WW?
It's one of my favourites. Kinda tempted to load it up on an emulator right now, maybe randomizer

The empty ocean, combined with Triforce hunting, makes for a snorefest.
it's blatantly unfinished and full of missed potential. fully explorable sunken hyrule, mini-dungeons and islands and enemies scattered across the map to fill it in, two scrapped dungeons, etc. like, it was so close to being something really noteworthy, but they rushed it out the door and now it just feels like a shorter oot with a giant empty ocean.

Brain-dead easy, more than your average zelda
Huge empty ocean
Shitty artstyle
Clearly unfinished
Triforce hunt
the artstyle although heavily praised, is actually the very worst aspect of the game, immediately followed by cut contents
He was talking about the original design
another game for the gay console
>gay cartoon link
>gay water mario
>gay limp-wrist ghost hunter luigi
The artstyle's great.
It's just a shame style is all Wind Waker has going for it since it's fricking terrible in basically every other aspect.
>“If I had gone and talked to him from the very beginning, I think he would’ve said ‘How is that Zelda?’ Miyamoto had trouble letting go of the realistic link art style until the very end. Were you holding back tears when making this post?
Idk, but Sakurai has better taste than you WW hater gays.
Sailing the “big empty” ocean is the best part of the game, it's comfy.
>the best part of the game is when it plays itself
Makes the noggin start joggin'
it's weird how fans of the game praise the shitty graphics and the watching paint dry sailing of the ocean

Less acceptance, and more interested in the thoughts it stirred up.

It is still cartoony. They should have been using twilight princess style or Hyrule Legends style for all their future games instead of the ugly colored garbage style they have been using.
Eh, still better than Dora the Explorer Hello Kitty Link.
I still haven’t played Wind Waker or Twilight Princess. Am waiting for the HD ports to come to switch… it-it’s gonna happen, right?
WW is a top 3 Zelda with OOT and Mm

>Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are successful in the West
>This isn't good enough for racist Japs, it HAS to be popular in Nihon
>Make the next game as le kawaii neko nyaa as possible changing the series
>Everyone laughs and is confused
>Oh shit! Change it back for the next game
>Over-correct and make Twilight Princess grimdark and edgy cringe
Nintendo is so funny.
I cringe whenever I see WWbabs give their opinions on shit
>literally the reason for many long running franchises becoming pisseasy babby games
>is a senior citizen that waves around a foam sword on stage
>'cringes' over an artstyle for being childish
Miyamoto seems like the kind of boss to make corrections to your work just because he wanted the last word. I don't like a lot of what Aonuma has done to the franchise, but god it must suck to work for Miyamoto
