I'm interested in what the Western lineup of games will look like, but still won't buy one in all likelihood.
The original MD Mini already scratched the itch of a high quality tiny console with nice controllers and had a solid list of classic games, while this being the far less attractive MD2 design with a more esoteric collection of games just doesn't have the same appeal.

Nah, the Mega Drive/Genesis Mini was widely regarded as the best.
The mini C64 was the worst.

ah maybe i'm thinking of the ps1 mini then. how was it the best then? since i apparently have no fricking clue. can you use actual carts in this thing too?

          Anonymous

No carts, and the ps classic IS the worst mini I'm aware of since I passed on c64. The ps classic is good if you do the simple hack and get some thumb drives to load the roms. The controllers feel off, like lightweight but I think it's a good lil rom box. You can also easily add roms to the nes and snes classics, I didn't do it but it doesn't look hard.

PS Mini was by far the worst as the games didn't run at full speed. Mega Drive mini is pretty bad, though. All the games have substantial sound lag.

It is extremely noticeable. I'm hardly a Sonic fanatic, I don't even really care about the series other than 2, but playing it and having the jump noise not play as a confirmation that you hit the button (immediately), but at the peak of his jump, is so distracting and wrong that it is indeed a big deal.

Genesis mini was "not bad" in that it worked if you didn't mind sound and controller lag, scaling issues, and M2 being surprisingly moronic at replicating the sound of the Yamaha chip (Comix Zone has that annoying beep sound in one of the songs that's supposed to sound like a hi-hat, something even Kega Fusion fixed a decade ago). Not worth the price unless you like how it looks on a mantle.

      >substantial sound lag
      its not even noticeable

      >I don't notice it, so no one can!
      Cope and so on.

I do. It's very convenient to use.

I'm sorry your 10 year old tablet can't play Genesis games.

      >The ps classic is good
The SNES mini hacked has been proven to run games like Ridge Racer 4 better than that pile of shit. Sony used the cheapest board possible. Even hacked it's worthless.

It was a cool novelty, and games looked nice on that screen. Just a shame the stick was a shitty and they changed the original button layout.

Nah, mate, the C64 mini was trash.
PS's quality selection of games vs C64 mini's quantity of shit
PS had 2 controllers, both better than the C64's
C64 is less powerful than the PS so less useful when hacked

The biggest problem with the C64 (and Amiga) minis is the lack of Commodore branding
The main value of these trinkets is having the trademarked branding on the shell instead of something like Pitendo

You can get them easily from Amazon JP for the MSRP. Although they are never on sale anymore.

yeah they aren't as high as they were, the tg16 mini is outrageous last I looked but they are both the same and the PC engine just looks cooler. As soon as I get my car repair bill paid I'm getting this thing. Basically, through Amazon you can preorder the US version of the console, and that’s the only place you can do it. The JP version is sold out pretty much everywhere but if you can find it it’ll run you around $200. The US version ships from Amazon JP, so after s&h it’s 130. Amazon is also the only place that’s doing an American run, so if it only gets one run it’ll get rare as all get out. I’d play it safe and preorder if you’ve got any interest.

Victor Ireland is literally the only person on Earth who can make this happen since he's in control of the licensing of the Working Designs library. But he hasn't posted on his website in a long time.

Sega should re-translate the games themselves and call them the un-Working Designs versions. Vic Ireland would then proceed to sperg out all over the internet.

I don't remember how much of an issue WD had in packing their script into the MCD games, although I suppose it might be easier without all of their so-called flavor text. I imagine it would also effectively become an un-dub, which is sort of a shame as I actually have a bit of a soft spot for their dub. It shouldn't bother me but I couldn't abide Harmony's dub because of fricking Nall

went ahead and preordered as I find myself emulating Sega games the most on my vita. Hopefully it’s actually decent considering the price and the shipping. I’ll be keeping a close eye on the Japanese and NA list, and hopefully they’ll just include everything on the NA version even if they don’t want to take the time to translate it. I’d rather that than some shoehorned in games to replace the superior Japanese ones.

Seriously though, that’s a big price point.

        Still available on Amiami.
The cosmetic Mega CD add-on is out of stock though.

          Anonymous

I thought about it, and it seems like the nip runs of the mini consoles are fairly consistent so I don’t really need to worry about that, meanwhile the US run seems fairly limited so I might as well go that route anyways. If there are some games that don’t get brought over or the library is a tad lacking, there’s no doubt it’ll get hacked anyways so it’s not as huge a deal. I just hope they don’t bullshit the 50 game library in the US version with whatever they can get their hands on cheap.

With the exception of PS1 for obvious reasons, it seems like every single mini retained its value or went up. Its really crazy.

Yeah, that’s why I went ahead and preordered. Considering retro is all I play any more I’ll get my moneys worth out of it. All that worries me now is the game list, but there are already a couple on there that I’ve wanted to play for a while. I’m just hoping the nip version doesn’t absolutely blow the US version out of the water.

          Anonymous

Just wanted to update and say I appreciate you reminding me about Amiami. I didn’t know how they did preorders, but they are one of those places that only charge you once they have the stock so I’ve gone ahead and preordered from both them and Amazon. If the next 25 games in the US line up aren’t mind blowing I’m just gonna cancel that order and go with Amiami.

Just hoping their low user score isn’t actually representative of how they are, though some of those bad reviews seem to have come from actual autists.

Also, anyone know if EMS would be alright? I’ve used DHL once before and while it was alright, my package came in the middle of the night and the shipping seemed a bit overpriced.

Just did. My bank thought the 0.01 charge to my card was fraud, but I allowed it and ordered it again but there hasn’t been another 1 cent charge so hopefully everything goes through okay on release.

At worst and there is some issue with my order it won’t get instantly rare like most mini consoles do, but at the moment:
              >games list is 10x’s better than NA version
              >cheaper after shipping by almost $40 than the us version
              >better boxart

I’m tempted to just outright cancel my NA version now. Out of the 25 games announced in our version, only 7 really jumped out at me, where as in the nip version just about everything looks good. Like I said above, those last 25 games would have to be mind blowing for me to buy it at this point. Hope my kindergarten level of moon runes can get me through some of the RPG’s in the JP version though.

There's a genesis Mini 2 coming as well... US exclusive content is:

    - OutRunners
    - Vectorman 2 (expected)
    - The Ooze
    - Sonic 3D Blast (expected as well)
    - Rolling Thunder 2 (interesting choice, would rather see Shadow Dancer)

Yeah, I’m a bit worried with the US line up. A lot of the games that make the JP release a no brainer I doubt will be in the US release, but on the flip side of that, the US run on these consoles is always extremely limited. Still, I hope we at least see the Capcom games on the console as well, and maybe some good first party games to make up for the lack of the better third party titles that won’t make it on there. I just can’t see Sega throwing in too much money on the western release and licensing those old games, but we’ll see. I think the absolute worst case scenario is they just pad the 50 games in the western release with a bunch of throw away titles they could easily get a hold of or had the rights to.

I’m interested in that unreleased game on there though.

      >OutRunners
      >Vectorman 2
      >The Ooze
      >Sonic 3D Blast
      >Rolling Thunder 2
      disappointing imo

OutRunners is a mediocre port and OutRun is already included. Vectorman 2 is so-so. I don't like The Ooze. Sonic 3D Blast is mediocre. Rolling Thunder 2 is fine.

I'm really gonna need some more CD games, it sucks if you guys are right and no lunar. Stuff like night trap just isn't enough, especially since those are available elsewhere in HD.

Yeah, I’m gonna keep my preorder just in case, but if we start getting closer to the release and the game list doesn’t get a LOT better, then I may just cancel and wait for the Japanese consoles to come back in stock. Rare or not, there’s no point in buying it if the games it comes with are mediocre at best anyways, and outside the Shining games and Sonic CD, nothing is really jumping out at me.

Yeah gonna need at least a few of

          Some decent CD gaems I like;

          >Battlecorps
          >Dune
          >Dungeon Explorer
          >Ecco
          >Final Fight
          >Heart of the alien
          >Keio Flying Squadron
          >Lords of Thunder
          >Panic
          >Snatcher
          >Road Avenger
          >Terminator

. I get that it's just a collector or enthusiast item but I genuinely do like having them around, I keep a small flat screen In the living room for modern games so I don't feel like a troll in my dungeon with my dusty old stuff. I did go ahead and get the PC engine mini, apparently I'm banned from eBay? Idk, I ordered cho aniki on psp no problem back in may.

Lol what a joke. Also who wants to bet there's serious issues with Alien Soldier since it's the optimised 50hz PAL ROM.

The ROM they used for Wii Virtual Console should be the only Alien Soldier ROM you ever need.

This device is not for the serious player, who should either have original hardware or even better, a Mister FPGA. Either way you will be able to hack and load games on it.

Eternal Blue is already going to be available for the Japanese Mega Drive mini. But Working Designs did the localisations for Lunar 1, Lunar 2, Popful Mail and Vay for the Sega CD. Those English localised versions are owned by WD or people who own the rights to the company. Sega would have to make a deal to get them.

        >gets the rights of niche japanese games
        >introduces those games to western players, package is often high quality and often keeps the original art
        >takes a lot of liberties with the translations
        >fricks up with the game balance of some games
        >in many cases his translations are the only ones available in english and he owns their rights, so you need to negotiate with him
        what is hid endgame?

I'll admit that some of the jokes for lunar on PS1 are lame and put of place but I don't think vic is a bad guy. Idk why he would hold the translations hostage either, just take the pay day from Sega so we can get our Sega CD lunar vic, I'm tired of playing burnt cds.

Is the cyber stick around anywhere for a reasonable price? I'm guessing the preorders sold out on amazon since it's 25000 yen now.

Why buy this over a mega drive with flahscart or even mega drive clone that plays ROMs from SD

COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE THAT THIS HAS CD GAMES.
I demand they can’t be run unless you purchase a small mega-cd add-on that is just plastic and does nothing else but enable them.
This is the only way it should be allowed.

Well they've got that part covered

This part you'll have to pretend

        >>they can’t be run unless
        >This part you'll have to pretend

The idea that a Sega CD add-on would add more games, would be a pretty easy thing to do. The add-on would be like a glorified memory stick in a Sega CD shell. probably connected by USB? The SBC in the mini II can handle Sega CD emulation just fine. But it would be a headache for those who just want to buy a collection of Sega CD games. Optionally, putting the hardware in Sega CDx shell would actually make more sense, for those looking for something a little more 'authentic'. Sega CDx came with a six button pad (Genesis model 2 never did), Sega CDx is a hybrid Genesis/ SCD system. The downside is that, not a lot of people owned a CDx, so the nostalgia wouldn't be the same as having A Genesis model 2, which replaced the Model 1 in 1993, and was sold as the default model up to 1996/1997.
