Something about the Dreamcast itself makes me feel really giddy like a kid. Didn't even own one til way after its lifecycle, but the design of the console pleases me in a way I can't put into words.
>PSO
I recall seeing a pic like that and thinking you'd be able to go down and explore that futuristic city. Totally not the case, but still a great game.
Personally I'd >avoid making the 32x >release the saturn and also make sure to localize the games that were released in Japan
It wouldn't fix everything but would have helped a slight bit
the DVD player and piracy memes get thrown a lot but i think its main problem was simply releasing too late
it was both ahead of its time, and behind the times at the same time
to fix it i'd go back in time and tell sega to stop fricking around so much with the megadrive addons/saturn and just go all in on the dreamcast
im not any of the 2 anons here but my take is that
>behind the times
maybe in the game design philosophy of being games that were 90% arcade-gameplay. Shenmue and Jet Set Radio are the most memorable games (skies of arcadia as well) because they offered a story mode.
>ahead of the times
this was good, tho. If the Dreamcast had been successful, we would be saying "it set the new standard" instead of "it was ahead of its time..."
The Dreamcast was great, but the problem was sega. One can also say that, even with all things going good with a (hypothetical) non-moronic sega, the DC couldn't have done better than the og xbox
yeah but they might have made it look more like XBOX graphics and less like N64, which could have been competitive with Nintendo and Microsoft in the graphics-focused US marketplace, unlike the abortive 5.5 gen Dreamcast
They might look good on a PVM for an instagram post but the fact of the matter is Sega botched the Saturn, and as a result management felt pressured to rush Dreamcast to market, releasing something that US gamers thought looked the same as the N64 they'd been making fun of for 3 years already.
To your point earlier, Sony had already won because of the massive leg up their gen 5 strategy delivered them. But Sega could have at least competed with the other losers and sold enough units to survive, if they didn't continue shitting their pants as they had for the preceding decade. Their entire experience after the Master System is a cautionary example in the maxim, "Slow and steady wins the race."

Now you're just being moronic.

I actually owned and played a Dreamcast when it came out, those games looked great for their time.
>avoid the sega cd >release the sega saturn in 95 with a single cpu chip and z-index to allow devs an easier time when developing 3D games >license games to make movies (golden axe, streets of rage) >global release of the dreamcast
the dreamcast was great, but sega was doomed already
>>the dreamcast was great, but sega was doomed already
That's what pisses me the frick out of Sega during that time. The console was profitable but it wasn't enough for all the frickups prior
The dreamcast was a victim of circumstance. Sega had long sowed the seeds for failure with all the fumbling between the mega drive and the dreamcast. SoA and SoJ needed to get on the same page and commit to the Saturn instead of fricking around with mega drive add ons.
they should've just skipped the saturn so they could focus on making the dreamcast into an actual pioneer of online multiplayer like it should've been, instead of shipping it with only dial-up support and farting a DSL/broadband adapter into the wind
I can't even imagine how it might've gone if we could reasonably play all those arcade/fighting games online
i don't remember the details but some youtube gay did an analysis on the dreamcast controller and talked about how its basically immune to stick drift, pretty cool
im going to make the most moronic question ever, anons, be prepared: phantasy star online version 2 is phantasy star online 2? or just the v2.0 of PSO1?
its just an updated version of PSO1, PSOver2 is the best version of the game to play if you're a dreamcast loyalist like me
PSO2 is the new-ish MMO that sucks donkey balls from what ive heard, never played it
It had a windows compatibility mode.
Made things simpler for porting PC games to the console, but IIRC there was a bit of a performance hit as opposed to making a game from the ground up for the DC architecture.
congratulations millennials and gen Xers, you experienced the peak of videogames
now understand that nothing will ever match up to the dreamcast/ps2 era and it's all a miserable soulless downhill slope since then
At the risk of sounding like a tendie, this series is pretty much the only thing I've played in the last decade that comes close to recapturing the magic of that era, though even it is falling into a lot of the traps of modern game design.
>abloobloo good games stopped existing after my willy stoppped being hard
stop the b***hing Black person and talk about games, an AI is less repetitive than this
>i didn't say that though
You clearly did
You could try to at least mention your 3 favourite titles of the dreamcast and maybe your post could be less fricking moronic
You know, you can still play those games right now, dumbass. Gen X and Y can suck my erect wiener, I'm playing more Dreamcast games than they ever did via emulation, and I'm playing them with more people thanks to Flycast Netplay/Fightcade. They never had it as good back then as I do now.
for me it's spikeout and blue stinger
do you know any places where sailors like to hang out?
if you want to know about sailors ask chinese people
Thailorth.
>had no games before it was industry standard
Truly ahead of it's time
Black person it had the best good games ratio of any system
>Soulcalibur (Dreamcast) received unanimous critical applause upon release; it is the second-highest-rated video game of all time
>according to GameRankings, whoever the frick they are
also it's an arcade port anyway
it's an arcade port that blew the original arcade release out of the water
this is akin to saying ocarina of time is a 3ds game
OOT3D didn't release a year after the original.
Sega released more games on Dreamcast in its first year than Sega has for the PS5 in total.
What? Oh wow... You don't even know young man, the past was not like today
For the year and a half it was on the market there were at least two games a week being released
I replay Soul Reaver on it every year
Probably the last console I legitimately enjoyed playing.
Something about the Dreamcast itself makes me feel really giddy like a kid. Didn't even own one til way after its lifecycle, but the design of the console pleases me in a way I can't put into words.
>the design of the console pleases me in a way I can't put into words.
it's the soul, which translated perfectly into its games
>PSO
I recall seeing a pic like that and thinking you'd be able to go down and explore that futuristic city. Totally not the case, but still a great game.
what went right?
How would you fix Sega fricking up?
Personally I'd
>avoid making the 32x
>release the saturn and also make sure to localize the games that were released in Japan
It wouldn't fix everything but would have helped a slight bit
Go back in time and hunt down any and all proto-snoys.
hyper based
but also you'd need to maybe get rid of bernie stolar as well for his transgressions against the saturn and dreamcast
the DVD player and piracy memes get thrown a lot but i think its main problem was simply releasing too late
it was both ahead of its time, and behind the times at the same time
to fix it i'd go back in time and tell sega to stop fricking around so much with the megadrive addons/saturn and just go all in on the dreamcast
Is that Phantasy Star?
yes, PSO2, there's a yt channel where they still play it with other people online
PSO yes
i didnt make these webms but im guessing they were taken from the gamecube version or Blue Burst, thoughever
>its main problem was simply releasing too late
>it was both ahead of its time, and behind the times at the same time
What an moronic analysis.
probably yeah cause im druk
explain why tho
im not any of the 2 anons here but my take is that

cancel all the moronic genesis addons, support saturn, delay Dreamcast 1-1.5 yrs. easy. they just managed like panicky pissbabies for a decade
>delay Dreamcast 1-1.5yrs
are you mental? the PS2 would have just obliterated it even more
yeah but they might have made it look more like XBOX graphics and less like N64, which could have been competitive with Nintendo and Microsoft in the graphics-focused US marketplace, unlike the abortive 5.5 gen Dreamcast
nah, man, shenmue, soul calibur, virtua tennis 2, all looked goo. The graphics were not a problem, specially when they came out.
I was 10yo when the dreamcast came out and it felt like a console from the future
They might look good on a PVM for an instagram post but the fact of the matter is Sega botched the Saturn, and as a result management felt pressured to rush Dreamcast to market, releasing something that US gamers thought looked the same as the N64 they'd been making fun of for 3 years already.

Don't let braindead japs run the company
>braindead japs
>when the idea of the 32x came from SoA
its funny, I don't hate the Sega CD yet I can't name a single good thing from the 32x
The 32X happened because Hayao Nakayama was scared of the Atari Jaguar.
It was the israelites of SoA that ruined it
Would it be naive to attribute the success of the Genesis to SoA?
The success of the Genesis was built on top of sport games moron
>avoid the sega cd
>release the sega saturn in 95 with a single cpu chip and z-index to allow devs an easier time when developing 3D games

>>the dreamcast was great, but sega was doomed already
That's what pisses me the frick out of Sega during that time. The console was profitable but it wasn't enough for all the frickups prior
exactly. Sega was in full-on moronic mode from 94 to 98. Those years were an absolute disaster.
Now the question is HOW would we fix that 94-98 timeframe: hold on with a dying genesis until the dreamcast or re-do the saturn in some capacity?
>third option is shifting to 3rd party during the ps1 but backstabbing them by taking away all their games for when the dreamcast was out
>third option is shifting to 3rd party during the ps1
They were already starting in that era look at the PC releases.
The dreamcast was a victim of circumstance. Sega had long sowed the seeds for failure with all the fumbling between the mega drive and the dreamcast. SoA and SoJ needed to get on the same page and commit to the Saturn instead of fricking around with mega drive add ons.
Was my last console before I went PC route. That box was surprisingly very heavy for its size.
Warning: This disc is for use only on Sega Dreamcast.
Certified hood classic incoming.
best party brawler ever made to this day frick Smash and frick Capcom for not keeping the IP going!
they should've just skipped the saturn so they could focus on making the dreamcast into an actual pioneer of online multiplayer like it should've been, instead of shipping it with only dial-up support and farting a DSL/broadband adapter into the wind

absolutely smashed the frick out of the controllers and they still worked great, but the top thing kinda breaks where the logo is
i don't remember the details but some youtube gay did an analysis on the dreamcast controller and talked about how its basically immune to stick drift, pretty cool
The best video game of all time

PSO 2 pre-NGS is okay if repetitive. NGS is truly horrible.
Wasn't this fricking thing running windows under the hood?
>under the hood
>Designed for Windows CE
It had a windows compatibility mode.
Made things simpler for porting PC games to the console, but IIRC there was a bit of a performance hit as opposed to making a game from the ground up for the DC architecture.
This is basically the theme for the life of the Dreamcast for me. https://youtu.be/S0Sw7cNOY7w

im OP, my fellow homosexual
admittedly that post was mostly just bump bait but i stand by it
You know, you can still play those games right now, dumbass. Gen X and Y can suck my erect wiener, I'm playing more Dreamcast games than they ever did via emulation, and I'm playing them with more people thanks to Flycast Netplay/Fightcade. They never had it as good back then as I do now.
Only real homies remember this
I still use it for playing imports
The game had charm
Is it safe to floigan post here or are the troony granny /vr/ jannies gonna melty
the Dreamcast had one liability that ensured its short lifespan even without Sega being bankrupt. ONE STICK. Games
I don't care about the right stick, but going from 6 face buttons to 4 was an idiotic downgrade.
The best console of all time, unironically
Overrated crap
