For me I see it as a sort of digital luxury.
If Steam would show what DLCs you own, I'd buy every single one for CK2 and EU4 just to show off that I'm rich.
But since there is no way of showing this I just use creamapi, because frick Paradox as a company.

Supported the game from the start, paid 20$ every few months. Just because a Black person like you cant save money and be patient doesnt mean everyone is a dumb ape like you.

playing these games makes them feel smart (they aren't) so they spend $20 every so often for a new mission tree for mali or some shit

When you put literally thousands of hours into the game the economy is actually pretty good.
I have no idea why you'd financially support their modern releases though

    Zero fricking competition
There are games like Field of Glory Empires or shadow empire sure but it's not enough, especially considering all modern day grand strategy games that come out suck wiener

      Anonymous

There are a lot of recent strategy games you can play and there is no need to play Paraslop.
Ultimate General, Strategic Command, Second Front, Decisive Campaigns, War in the East, Sovereign II, Espiocracy, Operational Art of War, Endless Legends, Songs of Conquest...

Havent played hoi4 in ages but im pretty sure the mechanics introduced in the dlc are updated into the game for everyone and the dlcs only give you the focus trees

I think they actually made lend lease free just recently. Or some other formerly DLC exclusive feature.

Anyways, as a pirate, for me they're free updates.

    >mechanic is wholly designed and developed years after the base game launches
To me the only cutoff point of "is this acceptable as DLC" is whether the work for it was done before or after release, so I truly don't see the problem.
    >It should have been in the base game!
All that says to me is that, if the base game lacked features, doesn't that mean you shouldn't have purchased it?

Your opinion is valid and I agree, game devs can do whatever they want and if they work to add more content to the game they have every right to charge their consumers for it. But I will point out that in terms of HOI4, the combined amount of DLC's costs over twice as much as the base game, but does not add twice the amount of content. This is not justifiable, the DLC's are over priced for what they are

        >overpriced
i have bought every stellaris dlc, but this really does cut to the heart of it. Never feels like theres enough content to justify the price. Also the main reason i bought most of those on g2a and equivalents.

        Anonymous

Oh, yeah, price per amount content is a completely separate discussion, but it's much more subjective and I don't think there's even a way to gauge what feels as the "right" way to price something from anything even vaguely approaching an objective metric.
Paradox' DLC policy itself of making a billion DLC pieces over the course of ten years is something I have basically zero issue with, but people definitely should question whether the content is priced in a way they feel is adequate and whether they have been thinning the amount of content while keeping the same price over the years

threadly reminder that paradox hardcoded the ship designer in hoi4 so that modders couldn't make one for planes / tanks on their own

I think one way of justifying the price for DLC's is to try and look the base game +DLC's as just one game instead of separate units. Stellaris costs $45. Would I be okay with paying that amount of money for a game? Sure. Stellaris with all the DLC's costs $285. Would I be okay with paying that amount of money for a game? Absolutely not

bought HoI3 in 2015 with all of its DLCs (cosmetics excluded) for 10 Euro. Now HoI4 is one year older than HoI3 was by that point yet it somehow costs 40 Euro and even on sale you will pay more than 10 Euro for the base game alone - and all the DLCs are -60% AT BEST

Monopoly on a subgenre for autists and naive midwits that have lots of spare cash and dont really play games from other genres.
Like EU4 has tops 20K long term players that play since 2013. and buy all the dlc but it has another like 80K that got to buy at least 7 DLCa and the base game and lots of players that got memed into buying the base game to play with the csrinru DLC unlocker.
Paradox tinto studio in Spain exists solely from cash by those autists.

adding new mechanics with DLC isn't the problem, releasing barebones games that take 2 years of patching and DLC to be fun is

I don't know why they don't sell complete editions, new players are just going to pirate the dlcs
The only people I see actually buying them are people who've been playing the game since like 2016 and have been getting them 1 by 1 per release

It's like giving lunch money to a toddler and finding out he spend it all on a toy.

    >Get Stellaris because I like games of that genre
    >Didn't get DLC
    >Play for few days
    >Pretty sweet
    >Make new game
    >Six hours into new game, a Fallen Empire declares war on me for some reason
    >Eh no problemo. I got a massive fleet sitting at the only entry point that connects my empire to theirs
    >They send a single frick off ship at my fleet with two titans
    >Wipes my entire fleet and fully upgraded Star Fort out
    >Proceeds to destroy everything in its path until
    >Gets to my Home Planet and proceeds to essentially destroy it
    >Ends war
    >Try to rebuild
    >Forty turns later repeat
This game is busted without DLC because the AI uses it regardless of you having it or not

Almost same thing happened to me in my first game, but I could have won if I knew the mechanics better. Their fleets can easily be beaten even with no DLC.
