Serious discussion. Is there any reason to own a PS3 in 2023? Any exclusive games or multiplats that are definitive on the PS3?
I'm thinking about selling my PS3 and am trying to justify keeping it.

this board is for the discussion of video games, not blu-ray players
Selling your video games and consoles is a mistake.
Just keep it as an emulator box, you will get 50 bucks tops for it, or just give it to your mum and download a bunch of 720p movies for her
My PS3 Slim is a rare limited edition model that can be hacked.
All of them can be hacked with HEN.
btw, if you are interested

>Emulator box
Using a console as an emulator box is peak poorgays cope
selling a ps3 is an even bigger poorgay cope
its a poorchad move
ps3+ps2 is the best combo but PS2 and ps1 games are fine on ps3 and you save tons of money
ps3 got no games, 360+ps2 is the real poorBlack personchad pill.

wow...
It has a perfect controller for PS1/2 games. Also perfect PS1 emulation, kinda mediocre PS2 emulation outside of big games if you don't have a BC system tho
I'm a huge fan of having a PS3 for all previous Sony games, and a Wii for everything Nintendo
my only gripe about the PS1 emulation is that PS3's video processor has a minimum resolution of 480i, so it can't display true 240p like a Wii can. Emulated PS1 games can still look good on a CRT in 480i but it's not as authentic.
>Also perfect PS1 emulation
God, no it isn't. The Spyro trilogy are all plagued with slowdowns, and especially Spyro 3 is broken. Everything is affected, from the game itself, to input lag, to the fricking music being slowed.
POPS on PS3 is actually pretty bad by todays standards. Duckstation completely shits on it. Even the PSP, for some reason, handles PS1 emulation better than the PS3 does.
>Even the PSP, for some reason, handles PS1 emulation better than the PS3 does.
That's because the PSP uses a MIPS processor very similar to the one in the PS1, R4000 vs R3000. I'm not sure if we call that true backwards compatibility or "partial emulation" or what, but the point is it made it very easy to translate PS1 games over to the platform
>or just give it to your mum and download a bunch of 720p movies for her
This. If you have a PS3, it's time to do something nice for your mom.
From what I understand, a CFW'd PS3 makes for a pretty robust fightcade system.
I have four (4) PS3 in the year 2023 Anno Domini.
I guess you could use it for PS2 games and some ps3 games.

Why sell it for chump change when you might want to use it in the future? What could you possibly need such a small sum of money for so desperately?
Limited space. Using the PS3 is tedious when compared to a modern console/PC. Some of us don't want to be forever surrounded by the trappings of our childhoods. If you truly want to play something on the PS3 in the future, which you most likely won't (and could emulate it anyway), you can buy one from eBay for 'chump change'.
Holding onto all your old tech 'just in case' is the ultimate poorgay strategy. That's the kind of person who ends up a hoarder. You grew up with nothing, so you cling to everything you have until you've accumulated a mountain of plastic shit.
the absolute zoomer mentality.
Nah I know plenty of older people that had owned like half a dozen different N64s 10-15 years ago because they kept trading them in or selling them then wanting one again.
Cheap PS1 games
Cheap PS2 games
Blue ray
I like MGS4
Online is free and many games still have communities.
Like what.
Destiny, most CoDs, most Battlefields, Xenoverse, Borderlands two, and etc. There are also the games you have to do work arounds to play because the official servers are gone like Killzone 2, the first Resistance, and Starhawk
Beast pc aside, it's the best way to play the PS2 Team Ico and MGS games, and that alone seals the deal for me. That and stuff like Ridge Racer 7, Red Dead Redemption and Contra Hard Corps are games worth going back to every once in a while.
Guitar Hero/Rock Band games. I got half the library for like 2-5 bucks a game a decade ago. Bet they are significantly more expensive now.
did you learn how to play the guitar afterwards
Yeah and I am a rich rock star now.
I have two PS3s. One is a slim I got in 2010 right when it got jailbroken. The other is a fully-backwards-compatible launch model fat I got at a flea market for a few bucks. Both still work flawlessly and both have CFW (I made sure to open up and clean the fat ps3 out and reapply thermal paste and all that).
PS3s, particularly the early models, are a fantastic way to play not just PS3 games, but also PS2 games and PS1 games via emulation. The PS1 emulation is really good and it makes for a really low-hassle way to play PS1 games without having to worry about things at all. And you can use component cables fro 480i output on a CRT, which is my preferred method of playing PS2 games.
PStriple got lots of games (eventually...). And yeah, a lot of stuff nowadays has been rereleased elsewhere. But I still like playing those original versions of games, plus you have plenty of stuff like 3D Dot Heroes or the true version of Demons Souls that aren't available elsewhere.
The PS1 emulation is pretty iffy on PS3.
>games are output as 480i, even those that were 240p
>image is softer on games that aren't legitimate discs
>3 frames of input delay, not a big deal for RPGs but fricking maddening for action games
valid issues
>image is softer on games that aren't legitimate discs
to be fair IIRC that only applies to the "playstation classics" PSN downloads. If you boot an ISO via your modmanager, simulating using a PS1 disc, it's not an issue and you get a crisp image.
Fat might not necessarily be the best option for everyone. You have to put in some extra work to prevent it from an-hero'ing via YLOD, and nothing is guaranteed to keep it alive forever. Slims are far more reliable. For some people it might be more worthwhile to just get a slim and a dedicated PS2 instead of a BC fat PS3
PS3 CFW is way less of a pain in the ass than 360 modding for anything that is still only on consoles and is prohibitively expensive to buy used, eg. Armored Core since 2 months ago. There's also some games where all the subsequent ports are shite like Atelier Rorona Plus (it gets a bit more complicated with other PS3 Gust games where the ports are also shite but had stuff added as well).
Of all the JRPGs, Eternal Sonata's later PS3 port was better like SO4, ToV, etc. but that game has never made it onto PC or newer consoles.
Demon's Souls obviously
Resistance 1-3
KZ 2-3 if you're into that
Ar Tonelico Qoga
Drakengard 3
MGS4
Motorstorm
Tales of Xillia +2
Some fighting games you probably don't care about like Aquapazza and Dengeki Fighting Climax
>games are output as 480i, even those that were 240p
Most people won't give a shit about that and you could argue on the other hand it's the easiest and cheapest way to play real PSX disks on HDTVs that don't have composite or S-Video. Except actually deinterlacing for that is when it has the 3 frames of lag.
Demon's souls is fine, but i wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy playing Drakengard 3 on original hardware.
I completed the game years ago and was one of the most miserable experiences of my life (from a technical standpoint, I love the game).
You could just emulate Drakengard 3 or Demon's for that matter with a decent PC at 60 fps.
This is pretty autistic but I like to buy multiplats on PS3 since they're all dirt fricking cheap, even though most of these games I've already played in way better quality on PC. But having a steam key of New Vegas on my computer is soulless compared to having a real copy of New Vegas on a disc, even if it's a janky PS3 port of the game. I just like having dumb shit like the N64 port of Resident Evil 2 or Doom on 32X with the fart noise soundtrack
I wouldn't recommend Bioshock on PS3, I bought the collection on PS3 and it screen tears at random intervals. The remastered is a butcher mess so i recommend the og on PC maybe 360
I actually still have my original PC release of Bioshock from 2007, since that was still during the time when we could buy physical PC games that weren't just steam keys in a box.
PS3 is the last console with SOUL
Also it's super fun to jailbreak and install custom firmware and emulators on. Also PS2 iso's just work somehow when you install them so you can run PS1, 2, and 3 games without needing the first gen PS3. Also some games still have online functionality so you can get some small comfy online multiplayer games going sometimes.
Are emulators any good on PS3 nowadays? I haven't dabbled with them in some time, but I remember putting on a genesis emulator back in the mid 2010s and was unsatisfied with janky slowdown in common games like Sonic 3 and Gunstar Heroes, as well as HORRIBLE sound emulation that sounded nothing like a real genesis. I just figured trying to program emulators for the cell processor was a huge pain in the ass and never bothered looking more into it.
I've only messed around with the SNES emulator so I can't say for sure about the genesis emulator, but SNES ran almost perfectly aside from a few one off audio issues, but performance wise it ran great
I bought one last week to play MGS4
Probably gonna play the original Demon's Souls and Dark Souls on it as well
I like Ridge Racer and Time Crisis alot so I keep mine, and it has a couple weird exclusives like 3D Dot Game Heroes from FromSoftware (you kids like them), Puppeteer, Tokyo Jungle, etc., but for the most part no, everything either performed better on 360 (and performs even better now on Series X) or has a better PS4/5 port.
>Any exclusive games or multiplats that are definitive on the PS3?
Do you want to play Last of Us and don't want to give Naughty Dog money in 2023? Installing CFW is pretty simple, and used copies are $5 if CFW is too hard for you
I gave mine away to the guy who installed my new furnace.
I keep mine around since I got PS3Hen on it and pretty much only use it as a region free Blu-ray player. Maybe on rare occasions I sit down and replay some of the Ratchet and Clank franchise on there since it got the future trilogy and the classic series remasters.
Fat for backwards compatibility. If for any other reason just mod it.
for the PS1 and PS2 games on the PSN.
A very fun addictive game. This would have been amazing at the arcades in the 90's.
No, pic related can play every game PS3 better than PS3, and you don't have to pay for them.
Including MGS4? I hear that one is a b***h to emulate, much like MGS3 on PCSX2.
You have no idea how limited the capability list is. More than half of the games don't work.
>play every game
Have you even tried emulating on that
PS3 emulation is not compatible with the majority of ps3 games, but ps3 doesn't have very many exclusives that are worth getting especially if you're going to spend like $200 on a used ps3.
Biggest one is MGS4. Its fun but not a game you can play too many times.
Demon souls is playable on the emulator
Wipeout HD, but is it worth $200 to play it? meh, also its on ps4 and i think ps5
Little big planet? not sure if the emulator is compatible to play it.
I don't really know how ps3 emulation is going and how fast they are updating the compatible games, but its been pretty slow.
Okay 3 senarios to buy a ps3
>you fricking love metal gear and you need to play mgs4
>you fricking love wipeout hd and you need to play wipeout hd, but again you can play it on ps4
>you are a rich gay and you have extra money
Else don't get one.
>like $200 on a used ps3.
Where do they go for that much? I spend $120 on mine last week.
I was just guessing. $120 but how much was tax and shipping?
8% sales tax (came out to around $10), bought it from a local secondhand store so no shipping.
Guys stop being so autistic. I was making a ballpark guess.
>I was just guessing
>how much was tax and shipping?
This is the PS3 not the Saturn, go down the fricking street.
Try $50. I don't even think I can find a 200USD PS3 listing on ebay outside of CHECHAs even with all their marked up prices.
Demon's Souls and Tokyo Jungle.
Demon's souls is playable 100% on rpcs3
glad TJ gets some love
you're the 3rd mention of it
I think you can emulate it on rpcs3 too
>glad TJ gets some love
It's my personal GOTY for 2012.
Fat Princess. For jerking off, of course.
Mine died a few weeks ago
You can run PS3, PS2, PS1 games natively. No other reason.
The only exclusive not ported already that I remember is Yakuza Dead Souls
I've been slowly coming to accept that I'm not really going to use PSN for jack shit on PS3 anymore besides downloading a couple games I don't have installed and maybe some patches for games but I still can't quite get myself to pull the trigger on putting CFW on my main PS3 that I actually somewhat trust to keep running.
Wait, does installing CFW not let you download patches for physical games?
Probably not entirely I don't think, but I really don't know how complicated things are if you're still using internet.
>don't know how complicated things are
Don't visit PSN for shit. Your pirate manager thing (I forget what it was called) will let you click a button to download updates. Also if you really insist, I think you can leave the system offline and download the updates off the PSN servers with your PC and copy them over
>selling consoles
Are you that broke? You're only going to get like a hundred dollars from it.
I still use mine as a Blu-ray player in my living room after I upgraded to a PC.
>Demon's Souls
>MGS4
I keep my fat ps3 as my ps1, ps2, ps3 player and I have a ps5 for ps4, ps5
but I love sony and have a ps1, psone, fat ps2, ps2 slim, and ps3 slim in my parents basement waiting for when I have enough space to display them
I bought the slim in 2018 since I was a poorgay
>Sly Cooper Collection
>God of War Series
Pro tip the saga edition has an expiration date on their codes so you'd only play 1-3
>last of us
I bought a PS4 pro to play the remastered version + DLC I didn't want to buy the DLC from PS3 store (no stable connection), the goddamn left stick is sensitive and causes a stutter not found on the PS3 -. DONT buy the PS4 version
>Red Dead Redemption GOTY
>Metal Gear Legacy Collection
Metal Gear PSX all the way to MGS4 (no revengance)
>GTA 4 + Episodes
>Bioshock Ultimate Rapture (DLC and 1+2)
Sell if it doesn't do CFW. HEN works fine until shit goes bad on the server end.
mine's hooked up to my TV right now. can't honestly tell you the last time i used it. i think i popped in a south park DVD like...a year ago. i haven't played a game on it in ages since the DS3s fricking decayed. i have it in play for the bluray player which is NEVER used. i own like 3 blu rays. i've played more DVDs than BD on it overall. it was great in it's heyday especially when it was hacked and the torrent sites were so lively
absolutely wouldn't sell it. you won't get shit for it unless you're selling it to a collector that wants some specific version, or a zoomer that wants a modded "retro" console. just keep it around. it comes in handy sometimes
