On the other, I'm worried that a game with Larian writing, based on a highly casual system like 5th ed d&d can pull this kind of audience, which means any and all imitators are likely to use the same kind of streamlined, boring systems.

D&D5 as much as it sucks(a problem that is imo unrelated to complexity, there's just a lot of dumb things in it - for instance higher levels will succumb to HP bloat because of how it works) is still somewhat complex for an RPG, given the budget it's a peer to peer competitor with something like Dragon Age 4 - and you're not going to pretend that you expect Bioware of 202x to provide comparable degree of mechanical depth. In fact I'm more likely to be correct if I say it'll be poor action game with some degree of control over your party members where you choose between red magic ball, green magic ball and blue magic ball for your spells. The mechanics underneath are going to at best DA:Inquisition tier. BG3 obviously beats that by a mile.
As for writing there was no way it would be good, the good parts of Larian writing was made by this one dude who now has like 12 other writers to compete with, and those good parts were entirely composed of not-so-witty jokes usually revolving around tropes in the genre and general lighthearted silliness... that then was sandwiched with edgelord galore. A matter of taste but at least it had some character. The new people meanwhile are indistinguishable failed fantasy writers.

D&D is still too complex for vidya, you have shit like disguise, talk with dead, talk with animals, mage hand, animal friendship, charm/friends, throwing, water, feather fall, detect thoughts, invisibility, see invisibility
These kinda need specialized content and dialogue, if they don't have any they become quite useless.
With a completely original system you get to choose what you want, so you can just not implement a feather fall equivalent, freeing you from needing to design content to make feather fall useful.
I think the biggest thing holding DnD back from being adapted to vidya at least in my opinion is how much freedom you have as a player. There's solutions to situations, puzzles, encounters, and problems that the DM writing the campaign won't even initially consider before said things meet the actual players and trying to translate that into a video game will never work because there's a finite amount of things you can work into a video game.

Check any crpg achievements page and only roughly 50% finish act 1, and about 10-15% finish the game on easy/normal.

As long as you melee and it’s a controlled character doing the incapacitating, it ends combat with the entity, and if minthara were the last hostile to be dealt with, the game might close combat and keep her alive. Whether Larian implemented the mechanic with this in mind is beyond me, however.

PC has had several games recently (battle royales, indie titles like Pizza Tower, Among Us etc) that have caught huge mainstream popularity and helped draw attention to PC. On top of that, several longtime console games have finally been officially ported to PC, most new releases are also releasing on PC and even handheld shit is being released on PC.
Normies are becoming more accustomed to PC gaming and something like Baldur's Gate 3 is far, far more suited to being played on the PC.
Since even normies are keeping a close eye on PC releases now, I think it makes sense that CRPGs can make a comeback now when they have otherwise been dying off.
PC gaming is the new thing for kids these days because everyone wants to be multi-tasking discord and youtube and twitter and whatever else while playing.

Gaming "journalists" and streamers are praising the game just for being a complete game without season pass bullshit at launch, and urging them to buy it even if normally it isn't their cup of tea- as well as warning them to not play older crpgs as they may not like the experience as much as the "modern rendition."

I wouldn't even mind the turn based combat if it was faster paced like SMT, FF, or Persona. But it's just so fricking slow that I actually end up dreading the combat

It was nowhere near as bad in Kingmaker or WoTR if you know what you were doing.
Start with 19 STR / Dex for +4 to hit. Before you charge have a cleric cast the +1 attack for one attack cantrip on you. Then use charge for another +2 to attack. Assuming you're using masterwork or +1 weapon, then that's (4+1+2+1) = 8 + 4 (from your weapon) = 12 attack BEFORE your roll. And that's achievable as early as level 3 once you can grab a Cleric merc.
Furthermore, you get a +2 for flanking for every turn you're by an enemy.
For hard fights, you throw on bull's strength / rage / haste etc. for extra attack.
My point that I'm making here, is that it's easy to sidestep the rng aspect of your attack rolls in Pathfinder. But in BG3, I see no way to do the same thing. The best I can do is throw on Bless on my martials. At least I'll have Haste once I get to level 5 I suppose

Welcome to DnD 5e, where the buff stacking of 3.5 style games is dead and buried. Pathfinder 2e is similar but not as bad afaik and Owlkek games use P1e.
I'm a numbers autist as well so here's some ways you can increase your consistency in BG3:
1. Barbarians from Level 2 onwards get Reckess Attack, which lets them have advantage on attack rolls (and enemies have advantage on attack rolls against them)
2. Being a higher elevation than the target adds +2 to hit for ranged attacks.
3. The archery fighting style that Fighter and Ranger get adds +2 to hit for ranged attacks
4. Attacking enemies from stealth gives you advantage on hit.
5. The level 1 spell "Bless" that Clerics and Paladins learn gives +1d4 to all hit rolls and saving throws to up to three characters
6. Bard's Bardic Inspiration boosts hit by the bardic inspiration dice (1d6 to 1d10)
7. Divination Wizard's Portent lets you replace any hit roll or saving throw result with a preselected roll you made at the start of the day
8. Tavern Brawler doubles the Str modifier for unarmed attacks, improvised weapons, or thrown attacks, for both hit chance and damage added. This included Monk martial arts.
And many more, but you get the picture.

Why ever use a melee weapon when bows get to add dex to damage? two hand crossbows will outdamage any melee attack unless you can push someone off a cliff.

Reckless attack, smite, etc. only work in melee
Ranged dps is still king overall, but melee has a definite place in your party unless you're doing some sort of summon spam to fill your frontline.

RPGs were at the height of their popularity during the late 80s and died approaching the mid 90s, when turn-based combat was viewed as outdated and people wanted high-res cinematics and real-time combat. RPGs revived during the late 90s with Black Isle, BioWare, Troika, etc. but died again in the mid 00s because the money was in console gaming, which demanded more simplistic interfaces, streamlined gameplay, etc.
At no point was being popular tied to the genre dying. It was usually due to the taste of the people changing and other genres becoming more popular by contrast, which in turn led corporate money to chase after it.

I remember when Skyrim came out, people in my class talked about the game for few weeks, I had played the game pretty much to completion in very short amount of time, when I asked people how far they'd gotten in the game, I never got a clear answer, some didn't even make it to fricking Whiterun, but kept insisting how much they love the game, the music, the art etc. Most recent experience like this I had with Overwatch. I've experienced the same with multiple mainstream releases in different schools, and very rarely do you meet people who actually have played any of these games extensively.

1 and 2 have aged too much at this point (and use an older D&D ruleset which sucks), if you want to get a feel for the game play Divinity Original Sin 2, the dev's previous game. Different setting with a different rule system, but if you like that then you'll be sure to like BG3.
I'd definitely skip 1, but 2 is great still. I'd say take a look at the combat and if it seems good play it. Otherwise look up a story video although you will miss alot of great sidequests

Anon, get your priorities right. Fireball is cool and can be useful to clear trash sometimes, but at the same level you get access to HASTE. Haste on its own is incredibly strong, but larian made it even more so by allowing a full attack action (including the extra attacks!) instead of a single strike.

So far probably my game of the year but I loved Div OS: 2 and I knew exactly what I was getting into with this game having played a lot of 5e D&D. The game is definitely not for everyone but if you like story driven games with *lots* of choices and don't mind slow combat you will probably enjoy it too.
