Replaying X and was forced to visit this "castle" which doesn't seem to serve any purpose. Why even make an entire building with two floors just for the Pokeflute? It's like they wanted to include more lore in this location but just decided to scrap it and include it elsewhere. It feels like XY were designed as unfinished betas just like DP, which makes it all the more disappointing that we never recieved a Z version.

It's an old castle that was owned by nobles, and helps establish that Kalos had a very prominent class system, and the fact that another rich owner of the castle took the possessions despite him not needing it helps frame the background of Lysandre's motives.

On the contrary, I think the whole point of the Castle being large but empty was to show how needlessly extravagant the wealthy are. The other castle is also fricking massive with very little going on.
Yeah, people forget that aspect of the games. The game goes pretty steady and reaches its peak at the Tower of Mastery. Everything after loses the just kind of tapers off as Team Flare just steals things for sake of stealing things, and the climax where the main legendary starts to "wake up" just kind of happens.

Okay, I worded it wrong. I know they were after the Master Ball for the legendary, and Abomasnow was because it was a strong pokemon. It's just that those aspects don't really piece together in a satisfying way. They kind of just happen and aren't called back to at a later time, especially the latter.
this. HGSS was unfinished because team rocket abusing slowpoke had nothing to do with them trying to contact Giovanni via radio and it wasn't called back to at a later time.
Sorry if my wording sounds like I'm trying to single out XY and dogpile on it. I like a lot about it, and wouldn't rate it lower than any of the other game's stories. That said, with your point, I don't mind Flare at the Glittering Cave (for similar reasons as the Slowpoke Well), but I don't think it was the best spot for that plot point at the 8th gym, especially if it didn't matter in the story later on.

XY had a great engine / framework and could have been the basis for good 3D Pokemon games.
The problem is that XY / ORAS are all potential and no substance. They only seem that much better in retrospect because of how much worse Gen 7 and 8 were but even back then they were still seen as the bare minimum.

It's empty because literally that's the whole point behind it, no joke. If you would keep eye on dialogues (you probably don't, it's fine) you would know that Shabboneau Castle is empty because its owner was very generous and preferred to give away everything to people. Meanwhile owners of Shallour Castle always acted like your stereotypical israelites and were possessive about even the smallest thing.
The moral is that town with Shabboneau Castle is full of very generous, nice people that throw at you various small gifts for the sake of it while Shallour stands in middle of nowhere and to enter to it you need to pay and it's owner is fricking butthole.
It’s probably because Shabboneau is actually in town, so the owner mingles with others and embraces the community, while the other dude lives way out of town in his own plot of land, rejecting a sense of community with those who he sees as “lesser”

Parfum Palace is a monument to AZ's descendants going to war and reaping stupid amounts of wealth in the aftermath. Whereas the Shabboneau Castle owners gave away their resources prior to their passing out of generousity. Lysandre makes a comparison later in the game, about Xerneas giving its life energy away VS Yveltal taking lives to sustain itself.

But yeah, the castle is a perfect testament to how well thought out XY's final plot is and what they did to make the world feel believable. It's making more and more sense why the nugenners dislike Unova which did the same strategy for its story and turned out way better.

XY unironically has the most subtle writing in the series. Lysandre is only a bad villain if everything relating to the class struggles just flies over your head. Like how in Cyllage City there's a cafe where the best seats are in the terrace with cost 5,000 to sit in, just for one drink or how everybody is always asking for a tip.
Please stop going against the narrative that all of the dialogue in Pokemon games is [PRESS A TO CONTINUE]. We don't want the games to actually have standalone stories or anything else they can be praised for, thanks.
