guess all that's left is to see what mess of a Commandos sequel (prequel?) Claymore games/Kalypso coughs up

It is with a heavy heart that today we have to share the news that Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew will be Mimimi’s final game.
As we look back at our 15-year journey crafting games (and crying about it), we feel grateful for the incredible love and support we received from all of you. We cherished every game we made and feel proud of what we were able to accomplish as a studio.
At the same time, dedicating the past decade and a half of our lives working on increasingly ambitious games took a heavy personal toll on us and our families. After the release of Shadow Gambit we decided it was the right time to prioritize our well-being and to pull the brakes instead of signing up for another multi-year production cycle.
While this means that we won’t start production on a new big game, we will continue to fully support Shadow Gambit. We are already working on a patch across all platforms and have a big content drop planned for later this year, which we are sure you will love just as much as we do!
This also means we will be slowly ramping down the studio over the next few months. We shared this decision with the whole team at an on-site meeting before releasing this announcement.

Thanks to the recent launch of Shadow Gambit, we are also able to pay out a bonus to all employees to help them during their transition.
We are now focused on delivering the additional content for Shadow Gambit and fulfilling our duties as Managing Directors of the company – to our team, our fans and our business partners, in the most supportive way we can.
And while we don’t know what the future will hold for the both of us, we still love video games.

        So
Did the black woman MC kill it?
I thought Desperados 3 was good?
Did they stretch their budgets too far for such niche genre?

niche genre with rising development costs by the looks of it

nothing about the games not being viable in current market (which is obvious, if your niche games have 10k positive steam reviews and you can't turn a profit your problem isn't the games. for comparison jagged alliance 3 has 5k reviews and devs said it was a huge success and their best selling game and hamemimnont's first game came out in 2000. admittedly that's bulgarian studio so the expenses are somewhere else compared to german studio.)
the reasons given in announcement are literally founders saying that they are done making games founding it too stressful and taxing and want to instead chill with their families. so instead of selling the studio or hiring new management and keeping ownership they are laying off everyone and going in hibernation from what i understand. most importantly though it answers why shadow gambit is what it is. they already decided they are closing down before the game was finished, and, most importantly, it was funded by german government grants.

tl;dr founders wanted to take a break from making games so they took goverment grant to do one more before closing down. so it never mattered

Does this effectively kill the genre? It is my favorite format of stealth games. 🙁

as anon posted earlier, calypso founded a studio to make commandos sequel/prequel. so we're getting more games of the genre.

there's also last train home which seems to draw inspiration from commandos as well but likely less stealth oriented.

So, what games from that studio are worth playing?

shadow tactics and desperados 3 are both great.

Yeah, but they still sold "supporter edition" if you wanted to pay extra to support studio. Which I, like a dumbfrick, bought. They probably just wanted to cash out.
I hate germans so fricking much.

It probably doesn't help that they keep remaking the same game with a different coat of paint. I bought and played Shadow Tactics when it came out, so I don't really feel a need to go and buy Desperados 3 or Shadow Gambit.

I was interested in Desperados 3 because it looked like more Shadow Tactics, but it was permanently too expensive unlike ST which often goes on sale for peanuts. I wasn't interested in Shadow Gambit because I hadn't played Desperados 3 yet.
Now the prices might come down, but the studio is kill so there'll never be any more games from them once I buy and play their current ones.

Inshallah, it was a dumb subgenre of puzzle games just like the one lead by Frostpunk

Shadow tactics was a lot of fun, but I didn’t see a reason to purchase Desparados 3 or Shadow Gambit since they just look like remixes of character abilities.

Desperados 3 is more of the same but I wouldn't say that that's a bad thing, the level design is especially good and the main thing that prevents it from feeling like the exact same game

they are pretty similar but desperados has one trait that makes game much better for me, they removed infinite reinforcements
