The dodge mechanic is a contextual key press that makes you dodge when trying to attack and attack when trying to dodge, so it's inexcusably bad game design. Nemesis is an enemy that isn't just designed around that dysfunctional dodge mechanic in gameplay, but literally destroys one of the core pillars of the series horror factor, by not just using a gun, but a rocket launcher. RE1 starts with the STARS members shooting living things multiple times without it killing them, to establish how dangerous a BOW is. Then there's a revelation of a super powerful BOW that is impervious to guns entirely, and the only thing that can kill it is an anti-tank weapon. RE3 throws all of that out of the window, forgets what franchise it's supposed to be a part of, and makes Jill, a normal human woman capable of being shot multiple times with a rocket launcher. Anyone who defends RE3 has no idea what Resident Evil is, and it's no wonder they ended up liking RE4 as well. They never liked the franchise for what it was supposed to be, only for what it ended up being changed into.

Wrong again. Carlos has worse gameplay. It's an incredibly short and limited section, where you never have to be concerned about your resources whatsoever. That's the worst thing you could possibly design in Resident Evil gameplay. Total ignorance of one of the main aspects of its gameplay design.
Also, choosing paths is redundant because it barely has an effect on the gameplay. Item locations have randomized and unbalanced chance of spawning specific items, so you're not even consciously picking options rationally, it's random what the effect of you choosing a path will be. Any survival horror game that tries to balance itself around a thoughtless resource randomization system, inevitably ends up being balanced too much into the easy end of the spectrum.

All contextual controls where two completely unrelated actions are bound to the same key are unacceptable game design when those actions destructively conflict in the standard gameplay. But what actually makes it truly inexcusable is the fact that the game does not even use all the buttons of a PS1 controller. The old controller, without analog sticks.

It's not like they would have toned down the production values to make the game fit. The only reason the series ever got pre-rendered backgrounds and tank controls was to increase production values.

The train should have made stops at cool locations like a tiny mountain village already fricked by the virus or an old summer camp or something. Anything but another mansion with another lab under it, a second lab under that one, and an elevator that goes sideways to Birkin's lab. Replace Rebecca with some other character while you're at it too so it can exist alongside RE1 without making a giant mess of things.
Imagine if Rebecca and Billy try to escape the train, but at each stop things are even worse than being on the train. The train will stop at each station automatically no matter what. Each station also acts as a security checkpoint, requiring a unique key to get the train moving again. So at each stop you're solving puzzles hoping to get the train moving again, hoping that the next stop will be safe.
This is a pretty funny video because it sounds like the director and producer weren't even very enthusiastic about the character designs.
