The game was leagues better in early EA builds, before they retconned practically everything.

The classes are nothing like the tabletop but If you want to shoot, go Gunner or Adept. Because they have a way of adding flat bonuses to their attacks, adepts make heavy weapons with lots of attacks very OP. The advanced class hunter allows only adepts and gunners to go into it and it does the same thing, let's you do 400+ damage with one attack.

Fighter can get a 100% crit rate, be untouchable in melee, and deal 50-70 damage per hit just by leveling Weapon Skill and going Fighter to Assassin, Assassin has a special ability to do flat damage based off a percentage of the enemy's max HP.

Abelard is a Fighter but he's better off as a Tank because if you do so, it becomes literally impossible for him to take damage.

Don't be a leader because Cassia is a leader but she has unique navigator powers that are completely OP. Basically, she does it better than you and there's nothing you can do to change that. She is damn near mandatory for the party.

Pasqal is an Adept, he is the only companion that can use two handed melee and a heavy weapon at the same time, he will count as armed with both in every circumstance. This alone makes him a better adept than you will ever be, he will be your skill monkey, he will be one of your better melee fighters, he will be one of your best marksmen. He is your boss killer, but can be deceptively frail.

You generally want a party comp of 1 leader, 2 fighter, 2 adepts. You can swap an adept for a gunner. Gunners are best for clearing mooks, adepts are best for bosses, fighters are mandatory for keeping everyone else alive, the Leader gives everyone else extra turns so they become even more OP.

Magic isn't related to any class, it's an origin specific thing. So you have to choose to be a Psyker and then you can be any class on top of being a mage.

Heinrix is a Fighter-Psyker
Cassia is a Leader-Navigator
Idira is an Adept-Psyker

Psyker is split between Biologis, Telepathy, and Divination. It's mostly buffs to help out the party or to specifically build around your chosen class. You can equip staves for attacking psyker powers but they currently scale poorly compared to guns and melee. The Psyker buffs are very good though.

Cassia's Navigator ability are wholly unique and you can't have them, she's the closest to the blasting mage archetype with the ability to teleport people around, massive AOE debuffs and damage, save or suck spells, and high damage abilities. She can also make half her statline redundant and be one of the best skill monkeys in the game, between her and Pasqal you can make every check in the game. She can easily bloat her dodge to avoid damage, currently she only has one advanced class, class into it, ignore it and choose navigator abilities.
She is 100% necessary because leaders are normally bad fighters, she isn't, she also can have the highest HP of anyone, with the right ability, if you don't choose it, she has the lowest.

The abilities Yrliet used were hunter unique abilities that let her add flat damage to all her attacks and to automatically crit. Her weapon normally does low damage but has 10 attacks and 200 ammo, you effectively never need to waste an action to reload.
