How can a franchise be so soulfull and kino?
>first turn based RPG to focus on the occult and taboo themes like demons and religion
>kazuma kaneko's sexy as frick designs
>shoji meguro's music alongside other talented people
Let's discuss good things about this franchise.
It's All Fucked Shirt $22.14 |
It's All Fucked Shirt $22.14 |
Why is he shirtless?
He likes to show off his demonic RGB.
Asserts dominace over lesser demons
He was inspired, of all things, on the Red Hot Chilli Pepper band-mates.
I realize all these years later, so was Takaya in P3.
>Why is he shirtless?
>I got inspiration for the main character in Nocturne from the Red Hot Chili Peppers; I imagined him running around the desert naked. - Kazuma Kaneko
He added...
>I talked about the design of the main character earlier, but I’d like to add that in order to accommodate the demon-user feature, the main character becomes a supernatural half-human, half-demon being. From a design standpoint, I could have made him look like a monster, but I thought that was too common. Instead, I overlaid the image of a shaman with the main character’s demon-user side. Shamans around the world have one thing in common: tattoos. I emphasized the transition from a normal human to a special being by adding a full body tattoo to the character design. By doing so, I believe I was able to portray both the mysterious and sensual appeal of a demon. As far as character description was concerned, I decided that the tattoo would serve as a stigma resulting from the transformation into a half-demon.
More specifically, Kaneko is talking about this music video:
He really likes the band, for whatever reason.
I would dare to believe Kaneko got the design from Lawnmower Man movie, the suit and tattoos are simply spot on with Demi-fiend, also considering that Kaneko initially had the idea that the protag would have a high tech suit in the initial ideas.
high test
Lucifer really liked his outfit so he copped it.
his skin is hardened and he does not need to regulate a stable body temperature. he's only wearing pants so the game would keep M rating.
II and If... PSX translation when?
Once you taste the sweet lips of the psx version movement, you can't go back.
Hasn't If been translated already?
Only SNES version, same with II.
translator tom is currently translating the japanese version of persona 1 for psx
his own words were "If you want Shin Megami Tensei II / If for the PS1, you should be happy about Persona progress, because I would prefer not to work on Persona and SMT2 at the exact same time. It'd be demon conversation overload!"
>translator tom is currently translating the japanese version of persona 1 for psx
That's good too.
I thought Persona 1 was already translated. I'm pretty sure I played Persona 1 for PS1 translated on emulator over 15 years ago.
the official translation of persona 1 was the first megaten game to come out on the west and it was in general a bad version that changed many things and also removed the alternate route from the game
That explains some of the confusion I had playing the game.
Let’s talk about DDS. How can a game so deep with its themes, with 10/10 gameplay, atmosphere, story and characters go so under the radar of even Megaten fans?
DDS is the hardest one in my opinion. I remember playing it blind and fricking up the skill tree...
DDS is not underrated, it is rated exactly where it belongs which is a mediocre spinoff. No demon recruitment, negotiations or fusions puts it below other mainline games and even persona.
I'm super guilty of this. I bought both games, started the first & then kinda drifted off. I know I should like it but it doesn't grab me like the other games do. That & that 3rd person action series with the guy in the hat, I bounced off those.
>two other games with the same themes came before it
I like the SNES version of MG2 a lot more than those, 3 felt like an actual sequel to that instead of being a shittier retread like those were.
>first turn based RPG to focus on the occult and taboo themes like demons and religion
??????
You know it is the 3rd game of the main series right? It is literally SMT 3. Two other games with the same themes came before it and even then Persona pre-3 existed too. What the frick are you talking about?
I know yeah, but can't we consider MEGAMI TENSEI and Shin Megami Tensei the same franchise?
I do personally though a lot of the super older stuff like "Shin Megami Tensei If..." can be a b***h to play depending on how you go about it. I just found it funny that we acting like everything pre-PS2 just didn't exist.
I see, yeah I think most people who got into these game did so with something that released on the PS2 (it was for me with Nocturne) or maybe Persona on PSX.
Still gotta play the older ones.
he didn't even mention nocturne, he just posted a demi-fiend picture
>kazuma kaneko
I thought he stop working around 2009
I think he did, but some recent games still use his designs if I am not wrong... man I wish I could get all his artbooks.
Being a niche franchise has its benefits such as easy gatekeeping but available merchandise always suffers.
>turn black
>becomes evil
What did they mean by this?
I think it's a reference to black crime in the USA.
Your skin color being black makes you 80% more likely to commit a violent crime! It's absolutely insane that it's true.
Post favourite OSTs.

the sega cd/mega cd version of smt 1 has some good renditions of its ost
generally I'm happy that meguro doesn't make music for mainline anymore
Kozuka is without a doubt the most talented member of the mainline team
everyone posted almost every song shin megaten so it's time for some original megami tensei
?si=ddCvMJlxNYSeG41D
this one is my favorite
i need to play majin tensei
Persona's vocal tracks are overatted as shit and SMT's music is leaps and bounds better.
t. started with Persona first
I'm playing thorough SMT3 Remaster, and it still sometimes weirds me out how the protagonist's face superficially looks like mine from some angles.
It is such a simple design...and it works. Never thought I would think a shirtless japanese teenager with RGB tattoos would look that menacing.
What are the best songs from this
Just search for game + ost
I think the battle themes are usually the best tracks... there are some calmer ones too that are great.

The fact they had to add anime dating sim elements for it to become mainstream will always annoy me.
Any advice for Ouroboros phase 2? I barely got by her first phase, and am level 41 and neutral.
Level up and fuse? Same way you beat everything in this series.
>Any advice for Ouroboros phase 2?
Make a party where everyone is phys resistant and wear phys res armor yourself and pray that disaster cycle doesn't do anything too nasty and either farm tetraja rocks or give tetraja to one of your demons making party that's both phys res and expel immune is probably too hard. I think black frost with agidyne is what carried me through this fight and many others, black frost is OP as hell.
If you're playing redux use that commander skill that makes you immune to ailments as often as possible.
My black frost lost his Agidyne spell somehow, and I’m still beating myself up over it. His Bufudyne still does good damage.
WAR BROKE OUT IN HEAVEN
I love Nocturne because i feel it is the strongest game they've ever made on a design standpoint when you think about an apocalypse ruled by heaven and hell with a Japanese teenager boy stuck in the middle.
Everything outside the hospital disappearing, everyone becoming ghost juice, Tokyo becoming a desolate place populated by demons, you walking around just meeting and bashing demons, all your old friends being completely twisted, the Kaneko's designs going completely boinkers, the third person view, the 3D design, the score. Everything just fricking works.
It is also one of the most sensible one when it comes to merging mythologies from the Eastern side - Shintoism and Buddhism - with the Western side - Judaism, Christianism, Gnosticism. It doesn't go full bananas like IV did, for example.
Design wise it's easily the best. But the characters were basically none existent and the "plot" is just us beating up whoever is in our path for lucifer.
I think what sells Nocturne is the "atmosphere". You needed to be alone in a ghost Tokyo with nothing but weird demons to fully immerse yourself in this world. It is intentional. You're on your on.
i really like jrpgs where you don't have a real party and is "ön your own" like nocturne
but they are very rare, dq1 was another game i felt it was somewhat similar in this sense
>plot is just us beating up whoever is in our path for lucifer
that's TDE in maniax though, the original version we never got (i think you can play it on the remaster though) wasn't like this
The OG nocturne is interesting it's quite different from maniax US version.
First of all yeah there's no TDE there's no labirynth of amala, no fiends. This means that the OG filter was thor, since there's no matador you would fight thor at much lower level and he'd likely kick your ass.
Then there's no difficulty option, the difficulty is something between hard and normal. You can run from battles but less likely than on maniax normal, shop prices are normal but enemies hit you like it's hard mode. Ailments have much higher odds of working and probably a bunch of other small detail.
The endings and boss fights are pretty much the same which means that disco ball had to be a really disappointing fight, kagutsuchi is an insane pushover of a final boss.
that's interesting
seeing like that i think if smt 3 never had a maniax release or only the OG version released on the west things would be completely different in this franchise
did you play the game untranslated to know this?
Yeah majority of the text in this game is in katakana and I know the game by heart from playing it multiple times in english so it's really not that hard to play it in japanese.
Also one really annoying part about OG nocturne is that each time you enter battle the camera slowly pans in before you can start fighting, you've likely never noticed this in maniax but in comparison it feels like it takes eternity in OG.
It was my first SMT...the art had a style I had never seem before and the battle themes were so fricking good...
Lucifer would be proud.
I want to play these games, please tell me they aren't 80+ hour monoliths
They’re more in the ballpark of 40 hours. They’re not Xenoblade games.
Depending on a game, your skill level and completion autism these games are in like 30(just clear main story)-100h(100% compendium + all side content) range.
Post favourite demons... uooooooooohhh!!!
monke
>evolving him throughout nocturne and using him until the end of the game
>fuse this motherfricker in SMT III
>easy mode unlocked
Such a good demon, you can literally break the game by just using Meditation and watch the boss trying to cast the same spell again and again without any MP left.
Not to mention that Prayer ability which makes him a great healer.

If you are looking for a good streamer that is into SMT I would recommend Sirlionhart, he is a funny dude.
His SMT IV playthrough was very entertaining.
Is 3 good on Switch? It's on sale here
It's objectively the worst way to experience the game unless you plan running it on an emulator.
I thought it would run ok considering it's age... is that not the case?
The game lags a lot it drops fps and it loads slowly even slower than PS2 and then there's delay on every click you make in menus which wasn't there in the original. The experience on switch just sucks.
Let me put it that way if switch is the only way you can play the game it works just barely but every other version of the game is better even the ps2 original.
Can't believe ATLUS shit the bed this bad with this remaster... heard even the music is worse as it is compressed.
Smt games aren't rpgs.
For the SMTIII remaster if you play the game without the Raidou/Dante DLC is it just the original Japanese release gameplay wise?
From what I understand, yeah.
No labrynth of amala, no fiend battles, none of that.
apparently, yes
idk if it just maniax but without the fiends, amala, tde, etc or if it has all of the things
mentioned
also, iirc you can only do this on the steam version because raidou is dlc so you can uninstall raidou's dlc
Aren't you supposed to just pick "New Game" instead of "New Game: Maniax/Chronicle" to play the OG release on it? At least those were the options I could pick when I got it. The description itself also said "original release" on the "New Game" when highlighted
I think there's slight balance differences, but in terms of content it's the same. Balance stuff is like, ambush rate, taking 100% crits when ambushed, that sort of thing.
He deserves a new game...
Modern Atlus would butcher him
Bros... I've already played practically everything... and I'm not feeling like learning japanese to clear Devil Summoner 1 since it's the only one I haven't gotten to yet, NINE as well but frick NINE.
I want more smt....
tell me about soul hackers 2 as I'm about to start it, is it actually bad or just it isn't soul hackers and just personalite?
It's somehow worse than personalite. Don't bother
Smtv is so soulless
Crack when?
it's denuvo right? then never, you have to emulate switch version or just play ps2
Plenty of Denuvo games were cracked in the past though
today there is nobody cracking them though
Nocturne hd was released like 2 years ago and it's uncracked, you may safely assume that it'll never be cracked. More likely scenario is that sega will drop denuvo or someone leaks a denuvo free .exe.
how optimistic are you about the future of mainline and megaten?
>how optimistic are you about the future of mainline and megaten?
>optimistic
It's pretty fricking grim considering that not only V was shit, but now that they started doing Remakes, the good days are fricking over.
i hope the remake thing was a one time thing to test the new team and not something we should expect going forward
also, i think persona fans ask for remakes more than smt fans
>started doing Remakes
soul hackers on 3ds is kind of a remake
kyuuyaku is already a remake, atlus were doing them since forever
KMT wasn't developed by atlus though so idk if it counts
>soul hackers on 3ds is kind of a remake
Its more of a Remaster with QoL improvements, similar how Nocturne did with the HD version
V was the best game in the series.
STAND PROUND YOU'RE STRONG YOU'RE MY SPECIALZ I SHALL NEVER FORGET YOU FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE
Digital Devil Saga is underrated
speaking of, anyone has a gif from intro of majin tensei 2 where a demon gets shot down? I lost it but it's cool and all
SMTV was pretty kino
my biggest issue with it were gameplay reasons like defense scaling with levels or shiva being harder than lucifer fight he unlocks
Played SMTV for a bit and beat like the first 2 boss gates
Does this gets any better? I feel like I'm playing a prototype of a game with the empty desert and barely noticeable music.
I recently played this for the first time and it's one of my top games ever now.
demifiend or doomguy?
Nahobino
I hope the next mainline return back to the sf-occult theme. I like the idea of modern technologies reconnecting humanity with ancient supernatural forces.
I love the theme of demons on my arm strapped pc but for some reason atlus wants me to store demons in my ass like in nocturne and V. Where the frick is the digital demon in those games
In V Aogami is your comp running the dsp at least.
I've played ghostwire tokyo a few months ago and many times during the gameplay I thought how this esthetic was completely wasted on such shallow first person shooter but would work wonderfully as modern smt jrpg.
megaten bros, is tehre major differences between the super famicom games and their ps1 counterparts? I'm playing the super famicom version of SMT1 rn and I think I'm about to finish, gonna go into 2 next and considering what version to play
PS1 version has more qol features and slightly better graphics but that's about it. You don't have a choice if you want to play SMT2 because only SNES version has fan translation, and I'd place my bets you're a dekinai.
I was considering going the nihongo route for reps but I think at my level a megaten game would be more frustrating that it's worth and it doesn't seem to make that much of a difference, I'll stick to the snes for 2, thanks anon.
Kozuka > Meguro
Why are Strange Journey and SMT4 and 4A stuck on 3DS? You can't even buy them anymore as the eShop is gone and physical copies are ludicrously priced. When I eventually get to it, I'll just emulate, but I would gladly pay for a decent port/remaster to other systems.
You burgers should be thankful. Vanilla IV was never released physically in europe to begin with.
I'm English, anon. Didn't realise 4 had no PAL release, but isn't the 3DS region free anyway?
That was the original DS. The 3DS is region locked unless you hack it.
Dagda and Krishna not being in V but Danu being in was a mistake
Dagda and Krishna were supposed to be in. Along with Satan they're in the game files but not complete. Most likely whenever V Maniax Apocalypse comes out they'll be in it.
Reminder that this guy is a bottom
Typical chaoscuck.
All jap protags are like this & we love them for it
So what was Hijiri's unforgivable sin in Nocturne? Or was that just tacked into Maniax for no reason?
The schizo theory is that he is Aleph from SMT2 and the unforgivable sin was killing God
How should I build my character in Devil Survivor?
I went with an obliteration strength build but that left me with a weak as shit Atsuo which sucked because I went the Haru route.
>Setting
>Art design
>Music
No one likes SMT games for it's gameplay that's why series is dead.
>inb4 Persona
People play it for dating sim aspects, not dungeon crawling gameplay.
smt are the only turn based jrpgs I can play
or only jrpgs in general
