    I preferred apocalypse

Same, some characters were annoying but I enjoyed my overall experience more with 4A than 4. The beginning of 4A is godawful though, but after the fairy forest the game steadily picks up.

It's fine but people who think it's the best SMT are kinda psychos not gonna lie

I think it's the best one because of the setting. No other megaten setting comes close except for II, but that game is ass to play so frick it.

Shit fusion, shit partner AI, shit Smirk mechanic, shit new and guest demon designs, shit dungeons (there's none)
Completely rendered obsolete as a product by Apocalypse which fixed all of these problems

can I pay apocalypse without having played 4?

4A is a "what if" almost-sequel of 4 that takes place during the neutral route
You miss out on the big reveals of 4 by playing it first and the story has a very different feel but they tell you about most everything that's important, it's just not as satisfying as actually playing the game
Everything else, yeah sure, go ahead.

I just started it yesterday and I am enjoying it. Got raped by the meme boss despite knowing his weaknes so I need to grind more ice moves.
So to make sure that I’m going to the netural route i must be slightly law or chaos and not doing any side quest until specific event. Is that correct?
    >bro play law or chaos then replay it again
I can only play it once because I know this game is quite long also I’m planning to play apocalypse right after

      Anonymous

You should get a guide because hitting neutral is pretty hard. The alignment goes from -100 to +100 and you have to be between +9 to -9 to hit neutral. If you are perfectly neutral then the last choice will force you into law or chaos.
You want a guide for this, trust me on this one.

        Anonymous

Thank God, I checked a guide - the gamegay one - and so far i am on the right track, funnily enough it was going for the first choice every time like what he said

Simply select the first option on all dialog options and you are good. Ignore the side quests, though.

looking back on my smt playthroughs, it would've still been more fun to just play normally. like yeah it'd cost you another 60 plus hours for another attempt to get it right but the weight it would add to your decisions would be enormous. that would be very stressful, but that would be the point.

It's fine, but there is a clear divide here in design philosophies. According to interviews this game was a lot of new staff's first title at Atlus, some of tbem not even having heard of the series before. I think this resulted in the game not really having a clear vision, feeling more like a jubbled mess of aspects that vary in quality. The difficulty up to Medusa is amazing, I loved how brutal Naraku felt but that just disappears completely as soon as you get to Tokyo. Apps are just way too overpowered, especially because you're not gated from buying the highest level of a particular app beside by the currency needed for it, literally anyone with a brain will just know to abuse the MP restoration app which makes the already low challenge braindead. Writing is weak too, Jonathan and Walter are fairly memorable but never quite reach their potential while everyone else is forgettable. The overall narrative jumps between plot points too much for you to care about anything, I remember thinking the ring of gaea woman would be important only for her to die five min after I just met her. There's a lot that could be said abput IV but I guess I'll just say I think it's biggest issue now is how irrelevant IV:A makes it, the writing and characters are terrible but gameplay wise IV:A blows IV out of the water.

Smirk is a horrible mechanic that will hopefully never be seen again. The end game is pretty weak and I didn’t even realize I was on the final boss in my first play through both in terms of difficulty and spectacle. Despite it all I think the game is great and the sound and 3D made it one of the most immersive games I’ve ever played and it’s a fricking handheld.

Liked it more than Nocturne since once you get to Tokyo the game opens up a bit and had many side quests. I liked wandering around doing my own thing and going at my own pace.

I feel mostly neutral on it. The ugly art and bad presentation hold it back. I do have more of a soft spot for Apocalypse though.

IV specifically? Heavily flawed, but enjoyable still.
IVA? Story is complete dogshit, but the gameplay is a huge improvement from IV. FRICK THE LAST DUNGEON THOUGH.

what a coincidence I just started playing this after I finished the kino that is Nocturne and I'm honestly kinda hating how bosses are a lot more bullshit merely by having 3 actions per turn instead of two

thats the difference between the boss spamming a spread move twice in a row and wiping your team and getting hit by a fat spread move, barely surviving, and having to pick up the pieces. Also they neutered the Fiend theme how could they do this???

      Anonymous

You will never fight the fiends anyway, unless you're insane that is.

Its overall a good game, but constant missed potential. Even if you haven't read the initial concept document its just clear all over that they were intending to do more with pretty much everything. I wouldn't mind so much but the last leg of the game isn't very satisfying. You spend a lot of time building up stuff, only to have the character's arcs and routes largely based on them seeing really shit alternate realities that shouldn't seem good to anyone. And even outside issues with what could've been, the difficulty falls off too fast and demons really do just feel like move bags.

Atmosphere is probably the biggest factor in saving it, along with the OST and how loveable the main cast are. Plus press turn is fun even when bosses are too easy and you can break Flynn in a couple of hours.

      Anonymous

      >even when bosses are too easy

I got roasted alive by minotaur and medusa spamming spread moves on me, even when using buffs and weaknesses. does it get easier or what?

Drops off a cliff and barely recovers by the very end.

          Anonymous

are you sure thats not just because you have little access to good demons early on? minotaur would have been far more doable if not for war cry ALSO LOWERING DEFENSE (why did they change this?) and if dekunda was available earlier they wouldn't have been much of a problem

            Anonymous

No minotaur/medusa is pretty much the hardest point of the game, some people claim kenji is hard but I have no idea why.

            >you leveled up, take these 5 points
            >no VIT stat
            >DEX is exclusive for guns(?)
Is this game suggesting me to go MAG and AG build?? How is the luck stat?

            >DEX is exclusive for guns(?)
Not only that STR stat does literally nothing, if you want to deal physical or gun damage you have to put points into DEX.
Magic is clearly the best build, it's all rounder with no weaknesses.
Agility is only needed so you go first in battle, so around ~100 points is enough.
Luck is good because at 400 luck you have 100% crit rate and you smirk all the time and smirk is op as frick.
if you just go 4 magic 1 agi every level you'll blow through the game no problem.

              Anonymous

              >STR stat does literally nothing

Wish I knew this earlier. Im also finding that the typical bruisers Im used to using like oni are practically useless because of how little MP they have. I really miss the HP for cost system from SMT3. It really seems like the best physical attackers are actually the ones meant to be balanced attackers.

Phys skills really suck in smt4 and gun skills take a long time to get going, Dex build with riot gun is stronger than magic the problem is you have to be like level 80 before that happens and have fusion boosters bought to fuse vishnu, it won't happen in a normal playthrough I only did it on NG+. Phys skills for the most part are a waste of your time.
Magic is just so dominant in that game with megido line spells. If you're used to megido spells sucking ass when used by you get ready to be surprised because my god these spells are so good in smt4.

            >are you sure thats not just because you have little access to good demons early on?
I mean any boss is easier if you have more options. But those two are actually built in a way you have to play around their whole gimmick. Most bosses just have nothing really going on, you just press turn them to death without even then need to buff or debuff. This isn't helped by demon whisper stuff being able to make tier 1 attacks do insane damage with enough pluses, but they'd be easy anyway.

STR does do something, it increases normal attack damage. Which is just as pointless but in a humiliating sort of way.

It's fun with tons of demons and very atmospheric like all mainline games but I don't know why people think it has the best story in the series. It's kind of all over the place with paper thin characters and an incoherent timeline.

If it weren't for the leveling system and some of the questionable art it would be undisputably my fravorie game in the series. It by far exceeds any other game in atmosphere and story in my opinion (for an SMT game that is). Just wish the combat and fusing/leveling system and affinities were developed like apocalypse. Apocalypse just ruined all the atmosphere and tone that was perfect in IV.

I fricking hate going from 3 which has 3D monsters on the field to 4. It'd be excused if it was a ds title, but it's the 3ds - perfectly capable of using monster models but they didn't feel like putting that much effort into this.
Pokemon, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, all the other big RPGs on the system do have fully modeled creatures except this..

Just wanted to say Devil Summoner is the actual best SMT game but nobody ever mentions it because it's not a mainline SMT.
It has the most plot and interesting dialogues / characters, FAR surpassing any Persona title but set during 7 days of the Apocalypse with all the demons you know and love from the franchise and multiple branching points / different ends so you can replay it

I love the game but its one of the worst mainline games. It's utterly broken in your favor and the most blatantly unfinished game of the series. Giving demons all the exact same handful of stat spreads really rubs me the wrong way, it's like the game flies in the face of the one thing that makes SMT great. But it does atmosphere really well, and while the main story is weak going around doing sidequests and just exploring Tokyo is really fun.

  48. 8 months ago

It's good, but gets by largely on aesthstic value. I think it generally has good mechanics, but it's poorly balanced to the point that they don't feel well utilized, and the dungeons are also very poor. I still had a good time with it and I think there's enough to like that I can see why someone else might be a big fan, but it's a pretty middle of the pack MegaTen for me, but I love the series so that's still pretty good.

The JRPG with the best atmosphere, a great cast of characters and demons with great voice acting. The gameplay is fast paced fun but sadly not very balanced.
Finally it has the greatest video game soundtrack of all time which will always make it the most memorable SMT game in my eyes.
