Chance for Shining Force 4? Nearly nonexistent.
Chance for a new non-Force Shining game? Low but not too unlikely. We'll just have to wait and see if Sega ever wants to revisit the nu-Shining series. By next year, it'll have been a decade since the last completely new RPG in the series (i.e. Resonance).
yep, i hated it, even as a kid. it's why i've never played more than a couple of hours of 2 while i've played and beaten 1 probably 10 times by now. i just can't stand the music, it makes me quit the game
>is it fine to skip 1
It's fine. 2 does have some quality of life improvements that can make returning to 1 less comfortable, since you're used to those conveniences. But other than that it's fine. The story of 2 can be understood without 1, even though they are in the same universe/timeline.
Say the impossible happened, and SEGA is now considering reviving the old Shining series. Do you guys even *want* a Shining Force 4? Or do you want SEGA to not touch the classical series at all?
I would love something new in the same universe as the 3rd one that most people didn't play. Actually even a remaster of it in complete form would be stellar.
Yeah, there are character averages, and all characters end up at the same point in the end. You'll eventually get a better level up that makes up for your poor one.
The game isn’t hard so sacescumming for levels isn’t needed.
Yeah, there are character averages, and all characters end up at the same point in the end. You'll eventually get a better level up that makes up for your poor one.
Plus characters have growth rates that are uneven across their levels. Arthur for example has trash bases and low level up bonuses for the first 10 levels or so, then starts to explode upward.
His LP was fun because it's not a blind LP and he adds some worthwhile commentary. I actually learned a couple new things from watching it.
Query: Where's the written portion of his LP? I assumed it was somewhere in the Something Awful archives but somehow I am unable to find it. Is this one of those things where I'll have to join (i.e. pay) SA in order to read it? >die from ass-cancer before finishing
To be fair, he stopped the LP ages before the got cancer. So even if he's still alive to this day, there's no guarantee he'll finish the remaining scenarios.
He got those vids flagged multiple times by Sega in the past, so there's no proof that any new episodes metting made wouldn't trigger a takedown notice from YT copyright bots, resulting in a permament deletion of his channel had he continue his LP - so who knows now really what could it been...
SF3, probably?
But it's a hard question to answer also due to the fact that the series spans across different genres as well. I don't know which I'd prefer between SitD and Holy Ark.
1 for the cozy everything and overall art direction/style. Remake also isn't bad, but drops the ball in some areas.
3 for general gameplay, but that's not saying too much because they're all really similar on that front. The special attacks really should've been something you can manually trigger rather than just mostly random.
I tend to prefer SF1 but it might just be aesthetics and nostalgia, it seems like SF2 is a more robust game.
2 is better as a pure game simply due to the various QOL improvements and all. But overall I too prefer the first one.
More games should have centaurs in general. Hell that one Shining Zelda clone could've been about you being a centaur with how it has that charge mechanic that would've fit with a lance.
I really just want an ARPG or something where you play as one that's focused on movement because I think that'd be fun. And then a Pegasus upgrade midway in
Shining Force 2 is one of my all time favourite games. I typically replay it once a year. I stumbled over it as a kid in my video game magazine that had a walkthrough printed, with all the charakter portraits. The anime style fascinated me and I bought it as soon as I had enough money. Even learnt English with it.
I love the games alone for their centaurs.
And made the stupid mistake to keep Bowie out of the battles all the time, because I read the game's over when he dies. Got royally fricked in the Talos battle of course, and had to start over.
I've only ever played Shining Force 2 once and that was ages ago, but it is a very nice & fun game >The anime style
The in-game character portraits are unique in that it's like a mix of anime and Disney-esque Don Bluth style. It's really cool to see and I wish it carried over to subsequent Shining games.
Yes. And I think it was a shame that he got together with Elis, considering that he knew Sarah for so long and she was always at his side during the adventure.
But then again, childhood friends sometimes don't make good girlfriends and the hero getting the princess was a classic back then.
they never really bothered to give anyone much actual character or development, so romance never really had enough depth to make sense. technically sarah got more lines and character than most characters, but none of it is really that good. she's a liar and a bully with a one-sided crush, on top of looking frumpy and dumpy. the REALLY weird thing is that she's a starter character, and none of her promotion battle sprites are her own.

When I replayed this years ago and looked it up I found out it was a rushed game.
They probably wanted to add more to the romance and characters, but couldn't so we got this half assed crap.
I'd recommend just starting with Shining Force 1, yeah. Has a GBA remake but I'd hold off on that until later.
Shining Force 2 improves on some QOL aspects, most notably sharing an inventory somewhat so you don't have to manage it quite as hard among other things.
3 is the biggest of the bunch and arguably the most polished. Bit more anime on everything too compared to the slightly more fairy-tale/fantasy feel of the others. Not sure how to describe it. Does need a fan translation though because only one part of three ever made it overseas.
Overall they're all pretty similar tho. If you just want buff beast dudes tho you can also play FEDA, a SNES game that is pretty much just Shining Force, made by some of the same guys too. Main guys are these three.
For the tactics games anyway, there's some others.
I loved playing 1 and 2 as a kid. >play though 2 a 2nd time >get turtle bro leveled up since I never used him for more than a single battle the first time around. >he gets promoted into a literal monster >becomes my favorite character
FLYING
TURTLE
he seems cute and cool, but it fricking blows how hard countered he is by magic. and like, it cant even be argued that its for balance purposes, because characters like peter exist.
only morons think arthur is the worst. arthur absolutely dominates. he can be a little lacking in defense, but he has EXPLOSIVE stat growth. its so funny that people will put blue above him when blue takes SO much more work and catering to make good. arthur just needs the power ring and a couple of levels to catch up, and then he's a major asset.

Arthur is a chore to baby early on but with his good movement for the time you get him and ability to use spears it isn’t too much trouble. The Clowns in the circus make a good target since they seem to hate moving as do some bosses. If the game graded you for time he might not be worth it, but he is early enough and the game is easy enough that it doesn’t matter much.
Bleu had flight and doesn’t need equipment which helps a lot later on; Arthur gets bogged down in mountains and his benefit of using spears becomes trouble since it means he has to fight with other units over the Valkyrie, the best spear in the game. Kokichi the wing knight might do better with his flight despite his otherwise worse stats.
In the end it doesn’t matter much, the game isn’t hard or graded so I like to train up Arthur to steamroll enemies in the second half.
Yeah the SF games aren't really super hard overall. I think the big appeal of replaying any of them is the potential of being able to specifically make a character OP by way of abusing late promotions and stat-up items.
arthur joins and he's only like 3 or 4 levels behind. plenty of other characters join and they're like 10+ levels behind. additionally, he's in the early game, where the numbers are still small anyway and its easy to set up a feeder for him. later in the game and a character can only muster doing 1 damage, whats the point? its never really made sense to me why peoplke would hate on arthur so bad, when comparatively he takes a lot less work than other characters, AND his attack goes off the rails compared to other characters. he's SO good.
>Shining Force thread
Oh yeah ,we back baby~
Chance for Shining Force 4? Nearly nonexistent.

Also just wanna say that I love Final Conflict. My favourite gaiden game.
Who?
While I wait for other anons to join the discussion, here's the thread theme:
they nailed the soundtrack of the first game. the second game sounds so corny and comical by comparison
Really? I fricking LOVE the soundtrack for SF II, honestly:
yep, i hated it, even as a kid. it's why i've never played more than a couple of hours of 2 while i've played and beaten 1 probably 10 times by now. i just can't stand the music, it makes me quit the game
I should play 2 since its a childhood game i never got far into, is it fine to skip 1
>is it fine to skip 1
It's fine. 2 does have some quality of life improvements that can make returning to 1 less comfortable, since you're used to those conveniences. But other than that it's fine. The story of 2 can be understood without 1, even though they are in the same universe/timeline.
Sure, but SF1 is by far the superior game
I tend to prefer SF1 but it might just be aesthetics and nostalgia, it seems like SF2 is a more robust game.
Say the impossible happened, and SEGA is now considering reviving the old Shining series. Do you guys even *want* a Shining Force 4? Or do you want SEGA to not touch the classical series at all?
>SEGA
So either pachinko Shining Force or gacha Shining Force.
I would love something new in the same universe as the 3rd one that most people didn't play. Actually even a remaster of it in complete form would be stellar.
I wonder whats so cringe about these fools.
Why is this dead?
The series?
Or the thread?
Both of course.
>series
Presumably due to sales not being high enough ro maybe SEGA having different priorities.
>thread
Us Shining fans are a rare breed now.
In SF1 if you get a shit stats roll on level up, will you get a better one next level, or is it better to reset your game?
Yeah, there are character averages, and all characters end up at the same point in the end. You'll eventually get a better level up that makes up for your poor one.

How dare TB die from ass-cancer before finishing his letsplay of SF3

Which game is the best in the franchise?
SF3, probably?

Seems like it drops it in a lot of areas to me.
What the frick is Khris even supposed to be? Is it ever explained? As a kid, I just accepted it.
Some kind of dog or deer thing?
https://shining.fandom.com/wiki/Kyantol
Very cute.
Which Simone is better the original or the GBA?
2. Why? Because it's the one I owned as a kid.
Shining Force 4 never ever.....
We'll never get a conclusion to the Innovator-Vandal Saga.
Suddenly, Shining Force 4 doesn't seem like too ridiculous an idea now.
Really surprised that Golden Axe of all things gets a revival now.
There are too many other kinds of shining games.
What's the chances that Sega make another consul?
CENTAURS!!!
More strategy games should have centaurs.
More games should have centaurs in general. Hell that one Shining Zelda clone could've been about you being a centaur with how it has that charge mechanic that would've fit with a lance.

Yes. And I think it was a shame that he got together with Elis, considering that he knew Sarah for so long and she was always at his side during the adventure.

To be honest, no one probably plays the games because of the possible romance
>TFW you only know this game series from that one buff beastmen in lingerine doujinshi
Am i an evil person?
Not if you play the game
Where do I start with these, Sega Genesis?
I'd recommend just starting with Shining Force 1, yeah. Has a GBA remake but I'd hold off on that until later.

Why are you such a furhomosexual just like me?
I am not a furhomosexual though, I just like this aesthetic where non-femboy beastmen get humiliated by wearing women panties and enjoy it
2 is an objectively better game than 1.
I only played through all of 3 once it was good, but it's aged horribly and has some weird mechanics.
3 would've benefited a lot from making the special abilities not randomly triggered but just selectable with MP or something.
I still think SF2 has the best music in the entire classical series.
Three is based
Nice OC.
Just bought the original Shining force art book.
I'll try to post it when it comes in mail
Can we also talk about Yoshitaka Tamaki's *other* tactical RPG in here?
Never heard of it, might check it out for the kemono husbando potential...
I loved playing 1 and 2 as a kid.

FLYING
TURTLE
I've never used him properly. Never promoted him.
he seems cute and cool, but it fricking blows how hard countered he is by magic. and like, it cant even be argued that its for balance purposes, because characters like peter exist.
Is Arthur really the worst unit.
only morons think arthur is the worst. arthur absolutely dominates. he can be a little lacking in defense, but he has EXPLOSIVE stat growth. its so funny that people will put blue above him when blue takes SO much more work and catering to make good. arthur just needs the power ring and a couple of levels to catch up, and then he's a major asset.
I never really used him in SF1. But SF3 Arthur is pretty dope.
No, there are way worse.

Is there fan art of Pyra being tied up by the hex whip?
No there isn't.
No there shouldn't.
Don't ask for it.
It shouldn't be drawn.
It must never be drawn.
You now remember that MUDDLE does nothing in the original SF1.
It wastes an enemy turn when they cast it.
Hmmm that's true.
Is the skeleton animated by magic of by science?
Animated by magic, strengthened by science.
