You should play both, they're very different, they can both be hard as balls but they're good games.
it's a game where you slash a guy once, dash to another guy, slash him once, dash to another guy
the progression is sometimes you throw a shuriken before you slash the guy, or sometimes the guy is floating over a bottomless pit

Dmc will not prepare you for the bosses in this game. Just go play it already. Save your scrolls for when you really need them.

It seems to be more of a puzzle game where you route an efficient attack than a regular action game.
This is a good way to look at it.
Also the bosses fricking suck. Since they also follow this pattern where you're trying to kill as many enemies before hitting the boss once to kill it instantly. Some bosses however randomly spawn random amounts of enemies turning their fights into lame waiting games until you have enough enemies to make hitting the boss worth it. The final boss especially is incredible AIDS.
I think the bosses needed a rework, and i don't think the sequel game fixed it iirc
If i could design the bosses i would have done something like this
>Bosses have normal phases where they constantly spawn like 3/4 super simple enemies to get you a blue sword and deal damage
>Normal sword is instablock
>After enough damage, a phase is introduced where they spawn 7 enemies for HIT THE GIANT ENEMY CRAB WEAK POINT FOR MASSIVE DAMAGE
>If you fail or miss it, they go back to the 3 enemy routine
There's not really a feeling you're "fighting" the bosses, it's more just waiting for them to spawn adds and instakilling
