its an "all you can eat" grey slop. its designed in a way you can technically play forever. half the quests are the dogshit radiant quests you can do forever and the skill system is replaced with the shitty perk thing that by nature makes every level-up unsatisfying because you can't do both the "boring" skill increase and fun "+10% damage to Black folk". you have to pick either +1 level for crafting/hacking or +20% (weapon type) damage and wait for next level to do the other.

any recent game that shoehorns in looter shooter dogshit i consider grey slop by default. dying light 2 does not fricking need different rarities for every craftable item on top of weapons and wearable gear. the first game did just fine without clothing buffs because its about parkour, not minmaxing your stamina so you can get another hit in before backing off
The overall main story is shit but the set up was very good. Like meeting with Preston, going to Diamond City, Piper, rescuing Nick Valentine, BoS arrive. They should have merged the main idea with Automatron and include regular robots for a revolution, it would have made more sense since robots are already independent and we could be a robot in the next game. Despite these, music is good, the Fallout atmosphere is there. It really should have more RPG elements, MC should be nameless like every games before and the new Perk system is simply bad.

nobody knows what went through the designer's head because bethesda does not make design documents, as said by emil pagliarulo (lead writer in skyrim and fallout 4) in his talk about story and writing.
We do know though. It was intended to be a machine gun that would fit the power armor. They scrapped the original assault rifle design for the game, and called the one that was meant for the power armor the assault rifle.

It's fun just exploring the wasteland and shooting things. I always end up playing FO4 like a console friendly STALKER lite. There's a satisfying loop of explore, murder things, level up and get new gear, murder bigger things.

Anon, I'm pessimist I'm happy when I'm wrong.
But I'm rarely wrong and their games are shit.
The only redeeming quality FO4 has is it's gun play and mod-ability, everything else except a couple of quests and locations, is made and designed by moronic chimps.
With a couple of mods, it's a brand new much better experience, quests and main quest still suck ass, but it's much more enjoyable.

The only way I finished any "Fallout" game after fallout 1 is because I treated them like separate games, and I enjoyed them that way, except fallout2 which is crap bottom of the list ew
It's because the gameplay is fun despite of everything. The fun of new vegas is looking at the wiki to see which perks you want so you can min max. Fallout 4 you just go and kill shit.
