For me it was Grandchase, Maplestory and DFO on rotation when I was a poor gay child ignorant to emulation.
Those games plus Combat Arms was my 'PC'.

Time for you to come back to Grand Chase then. New characters and new dungeons. Only thing missing is Uno but he's already data mined to be in.

You mean great? asiatics used to have a lot of soul. Not sure what the frick happened. RO is probably the fondest gaming memory of my childhood. The only other one I played out of these was Fiesta. I liked the way there were multiple active level ranges for pvp and pve meta.

How is it's current state compared to Elsword? I used to be an Elsword guy but that game has gone to complete shit a long time ago.

        Also, Lost Saga, anyone?

I got surprisingly decent ping from EU on the NA server and on the KR server you had regional communities with a bunch of people looking to play.

Wasn't it one of the first MMOs to reach CIS via private servers? They were probably easier to set up than most other MMOs at the time.
Then servers started implementing their own economy and for some sunk cost fallacy kicked in, while for others it became a platform to earn money

We arabs did have private servers too. PVP/PK is main appeal of series imo. It's fun to go with your bros and destroy other side. Competition used to be fire but game eats your time so it's for neets.

I recall that Ace Online/Air Rivals/SCO especially had whales dumping over US$100 on single weapons. More experienced players would also have specialized missiles or whatever for different occasions.

some of the degens i played sco/flysis/airrivals with in 2007-2014 are still playing the game today on pservers.

        >I recall that Ace Online/Air Rivals/SCO especially had whales dumping over US$100 on single weapons
        much, much more than that.
i personally knew people who had spent cash in the order of 5 digits on their accounts over the years.
some of them paid children to grind their gears for like 2$/h.
others got personally blacklisted by the publisher because they were spending 80% of their neetbux on the game.

yeah, airrivals was truly unique and continues to be to this day. i wonder if any studio will ever pick up a similar idea again.
personally, i started getting really bored of airrivals by 2014 because all the people who could equal me in pvp left and farming turks and pinoys all day long just ain't it.

On the Air Rivals side of things I especially heard of rumors of some collusion between the GMs and the goons, and some other frickery. Around 2009 or so one Gankernon was saying some of the heavy hitters in Helix were spending at least $200+ on a given piece of gear.

Otherwise what private servers are around today? And if anyone solved the game running like complete shit, I'd like to fly an A-Gear again.

It really drives home the massive inflation of whale spenders when $100 for a weapon was seen as considerable. I had a guild in mobileshit that had people dumping $3000 on the latest weapon, he had a job that paid well at least. Makes me sad these games can't be made anymore.

Spellblade is finally a thing but the skills require 50 levels and up to leveled up, Nexon is finally removing the randomness from dan tests and you can increase the pet's timer, sadly Chapter 7 have the milletian going full "Power of Waking" to solve the situation, also you are placed just when Triona was about to die and you can save her life, she still dies

Also DFO Global. except they added a fatigue point system so if you play for too long you cant earn gold or exp from dungeons anymore to prevent grinding.

Were KMMOs back then better? Yeah they had cash shops and shit but I dunno it just felt less predatory back then. At least the various games felt unique, I could tell which was which and they weren't just following a list of bullet points. It's probably just nostalgia but stuff like MS and RO felt soulful.

idk about others but in dungeon fighter sorta. You did have to grind but they gave out exp potions like candy so you could just go to the hardest arena with hard difficulty and burst your cube skills for massive exp.

In the lv 70 cap, the best gear was the rare gear that you could swap attributes. It was a common enough drop and you could add elemental damage without enchanting it with just gold. it made fight and light damage cards valuable

In mabinogi you needed to pay a fee to get a bag for extra inventory on a game with crafting, you needed to pay to rebirth, a core mechanic, you needed to pay to even do dungeons, you needed to pay for reforges, imagine locking weapon upgrades behind gacha, Digimon Masters Online was similar.

Old KMMOs were undoubetdly pay2win, they just hadn't perfected the formula for extracting the maximum amount of money out of their whales at the time.

There was a brief time where some game, not sure who started it, sold cash shop items as "rentals"
Every other kmmo saw this and went JACKPOT and started updating their cash shops.
S4 league in particular completely removed the option to buy permanent items, instead RENTING fricking COSMETICS for 30/90 days.
Later others started adding lootbox-esque chances to get a permanent version of that costume.
Then the RNG started infesting every other aspect to try and gamble addict everybody into submission.

Big problem the community faces right now is the files for the more recent versions of the games have been hoarded by a small group of israelites who dont actually like or care about the game for a few years and its burned the community out as they make shitty burner servers to scam the community.

Lineage 2 wasn't bad, Lineage 1 had a gigantic share of the MMO market that it robbed from Everquest and UO, but I never played L1. My only gripe about L2 was the fact that bugmen israelited everyone else in every server because they can't stop reproducing like roaches and they always overpowered every good castle town because they had more accounts

Only b2p MMO at the time was Guild Wars which had everything instanced outside of towns. I wanted to play an MMO where I could see players outside towns so badly, but I wasn’t allowed to play monthly fee games. Then Archlord dropped their monthly fee and became b2p like Guild Wars in late 2006 or early 2007. I was in heaven… The game sucked, but it was also so good

Pre-WoW KMMOs were honestly amazing. So much variety, so much experimentation. It was truly the wild west.

I am so fricking mad the Mabinogi remake is a mobileshit. We could've gotten a based classic MMORPG but noo it has to be mobileshit. Frick asians and their obsession with mobileshit.

my friend and I tried playing maple story in like 2006 and it was already such a microtransaction hell hole. we thought it looked so cool but could never actually do anything because we didn’t pay money. also there were way too many people for it to be 2D side scroller kek

Which one was the one where you can get aggro from like 10 mobs that can follow you into town? Was it Lineage? I remember people running into town screaming for help while being chased by giant spiders.

Surprised that people know this gems, considered that Ganker thinks that predatory monetization started with Oblivion's horse armor.

Does anyone here remember a shitty free MMO that I think was called Aika Online. They had this system where your "faction" was your server and you could go to other servers that are like a mirror world and PvP levelers or do server wide raids.

One of the reasons I loved Lineage2 was because of my father, we used to play alternatively, he had a Dwarf Artisan and a Spoiler and I played a Gladiator I believe.
It's funny because he was pretty high level and would craft me sets of armor, if a PK would kill me while leveling, he would show up from some other PC and chase him along the dragon valley.
But at one time, I logged on with his dwarf spoiler because he had this awesome Heavy Doom Armor Set with Art of Battle Axe, but some player taunted me so hard in Giran and I was so full of myself knowing that my pop's character is powerful that we went outside and killed him outright, not knowing that if you die as a PK you lose items and I lost his Doom Chestplate. I immediately called and told my pop's that I'm a moron.
    I was like 10.
