Guild Wars had a fantasy Africa campaign (Nightfall) and it was pretty great. The story/dialogue sucked because, you know, MMO (plus the game's dialogue quality deteriorated with each campaign as old devs moved on and nuAnet became a thing) but the actual world was kino as frick, great character and architecture designs, cool monsters, beautiful landscapes.

I respect the decision to film it entirely in Yucatec (I think? maybe it was kiche) maya and the commitment to the setting, but it both gets a lot of the small details and specifics wrong (though some of the nobles and painted city scenes look good) and more importantly in the big picture sense where the smaller towns are these noble savage hunter gatherer tribes who apparently don't even farm and have never heard of big cities, and where the cities are mordor-esque sadistic hellscapes.

Onyx Equinox is not nearly as good of a series as apocalypto is a movie in terms of the execution, but it shows how you can do a dark fantasy/thriller take on Mesoamerica in a way that understands and respects the setting in both the specific designs of cities, clothing, as well as in a big picture sense where they feel like functional societies and the narrative and character arcs (as well as specific visual choices/designs) tie into actual Mesoamerican philosophical and cultural concepts.
Zotz (the comic), Codex Black, BigRedHair's Aztec Empire webcomic, and perspectivegam6's tlatoani citybuilder are also good. Aztez, Road to El Dorado, and seemingly the Aztec batman thing look decent. Have other suggestions/comments I can give but I have other shit to do
