Yes, assuming the audience is there to fund them. It's similar to athletes, if you're in the top .01% and people enjoy watching you (sorry WNBA) then you deserve more than doctors

      Anonymous

      >deserve
Sorry m8 you fell for the late 20th century corporatism meme. In a free market nobody "deserves" anything. If you have something to sell whether it be experience, knowledge, or a skill then whatever money you receive is earned from current desirability/public opinion. Nothing in this world is deserved aside from certain human rights. The free market can determine at any time that sports players don't deserve shit and they stop paying $500 for 1 seat.
I'm not saying this will happen, but if you think anyone in a free market, even doctors, deserve some $ amount, then you've got economics wrong.

        Anonymous

        >free market
no such thing, things are the way they are mostly because of social influence and programming, if the marketing/influence industry wasn't so big and widespread, I'd agree with you, and it certainly holds true in certain areas of commerce, when it comes to the "attention-economy", nothing here is "free" my friend

      >Yes, assuming the audience is there to fund them

It's never been there for esports. The pay/prizes are based entirely upon speculation and companies willing to take big loses as part of their advertising budgets. Esports has never been sustainable in its own right. Paying them like superstars was idiotic.

        Anonymous

I think they weren't doing it for pure advertisement. These gaming tech companies wanted to artificially create their own NFL that they could entirely control by pumping in millions to esports like it was the NFL even if there wasn't really a demands for it. I remember even ESPN was trying to televise CSGO, not to mention forced shit like the Overwatch league. Turns out you can't artificially create something like the NFL.

Why should a neurosurgeon make more?
I think garbage collectors should earn more then neurosurgeons. I've never needed a neurosurgeon and I more than likely won't ever need one either. I do need my trash to be picked up once a week and the neurosurgeon won't do that.

Also esports are pretty bad for advertisers because they don't get to flash their ads on characters and the game world. People will hate to admit it, but entertainers deserve the most money. Not all entertainers, mind you, but I'm sure that you (anon reading this) have your own favorite entertainment that keeps you happy enough to not want to have a nice day. Your favorite video game designers, musicians, content creators, what have you deserve every penny they earn, right? This argument will always be moronic. There is no global fund that pays people for their profession because this isn't fricking communism, we live in a capitalist society. eSports athletes get paid as much as they are worth, determine by the amount of people who want to watch them and what they are willing to pay. They are in no way protected and rely entirely on their ability.

The same can't even be said for neurosurgeons who, as history as shown, can frick up people across the country and just keep moving from state to state while being incompetent and making bank. Doctors are much more protected in their profession and have way more guarantees regarding the money they make.

    Ideally? No.
Ideally people should do things themselves for entertainment, not watch other people do things. And if this were the case the entertainment industry wouldn't be so inflated and people who are actually useful to the functioning to society would get a bigger piece of the pie.
But if people actually do things themselves and dont have their attention stolen by something else, they wouldnt be able to see ads, and thus wouldnt be influenced to by products, so here we are

This might be a bit of a hot take, but yes, they do. Consider, because these people are public personalities, you hear about the tip top earners way more easily than the tip top doctors, lawyers, and scientists. There's a very very small percent of them that are actually making fricking bank where as the average doctor or lawyer is making way better pay than the average sponsored e-sports gamer or streamer, has way better starting pay, and has infinitely better job security. Then think about the doctors and lawyers who are top tier concierge/private practice who work exclusively for the wealthiest people in the world. Their talents are well in demand and they are well paid for them and lifetime earnings are probably going to outclass all but the most successful e-sports competitor or streamer. It's just you are almost never going to hear about these people just like you never hear about the wealthiest say hedge fund managers. They're only going to be known by the people in their industry by word of mouth or by people who can afford them.

The money they make is directly related to the money they bring in. Either to their employer or directly from people willing to pay for their labor.

If you’ve ever been to a concert or bought an album then you contributed to their wealth. Do you really think some third party should come in and take the products of their labor and give them to you? You chose your field. If what you say is true then you have talent in mathematics which could lead to many extremely high paying jobs. You chose to do what you do knowing how much you would get paid. The money they make should be based off of the money they bring in. Football/soccer players can earn millions in their teens, but they bring in millions for their teams.

Not paying a position like this a high wage is incredibly exploitative. On the top end people play their game of choice all day, all week. This is a skillset they will not be able to utilize in the next 20 years, and all the time they could have spent learning life long skills was spent being a competitor. As such, they should be compensated in line with that. It's exactly the same thing as regular sports athletes, very few can go on to make a career for themselves in something like broadcasting. Most just retire with whatever they earned, so it has to be enough for them + a family or you're just being a israelite to players.

It's really up to the market to decide that. People really like being entertained and that's been the case for millennia.

They should make whatever they can.

Doctors, lawyers, scientists are all important for society, but you can't tell me at least half of them aren't just annoying know-it-alls who had more money than hardships growing up.

    >You can't take steroids and be a professional athlete because its unfair to other players
    >You can take Adderall and be an professional esports player despite the immense advantage it gives you- in fact its so common its practically an unwritten requirement to take it

Why not, the quantity of e-athletes that earned $100 in their career is much less than employees in a city the hospital

There are fewer people who can compete at the highest level in competitive games than there are that can be doctors.
If there were like 50 people that could actually do those jobs they'd make bank.

The market will decide, there are way less esports pros making that kind of money anyways so it is a bit disingenuous from the start. On a moral level though all esports players should be gassed

    This is a common misconception.
Jobs don't pay you for what you produce, jobs pay you depending on how easy it is to replace you.
Absolutely necessary jobs like teachers get paid peanuts because replacing them is trivial.
World class athletes get paid orders of magnitude more because replacing them is extremely hard or outright impossible.

Pubic school teachers get paid like shit because they are just baby sitters. A college professor gets paid better because he is an actual educator.

You could be the top in your field. A genius academic mathematician, economist, physicist, who is arguably irreplaceable for what your ground breaking theories are bringing to the field, and still get paid far less, because those discoveries don’t necessarily immediately bring in enormous amounts of income.

kek. same shit happened when snowboarding was popular in the early 2000's. Companies were paying those 16-19 year olds 15k USD a month along with travel, food and room paid for. So they basically spent all their money partying and cultivating these party culture lol.

People are worth whatever other people are willing to pay them. We can debate all day whether or not they "should" make more money than professions that save lives, cure diseases, etc. but that's an entirely different question based on how things "should" be, not how they actually are. I could give a frick less about e-sports and think it's mega cringe, but I'm not going to begrudge them for creating a market where sponsors are willing to pay them. That's just entrepreneurialism, which is the backbone of any free market economy.
