Games are getting translated for it a lot lately, so you could play those on your FlashMasta or whatever other flash carts they make for this thing. Check this guy's page on here for updates: https://mobile.twitter.com/translatorWS

You can also get several existing translated ones on cdromance. Also, here's a pre-patched of the latest version of translated Rainbow Islands Patty's Party with WonderGate features unlocked (not on cdromance): https://files.catbox.moe/kzzgal.ws

And don't forget, WonderSwan and WonderSwan Color are two different systems, only the former being retro by the non-fake, non-zoomer rules

what translated games are there that are actually good?

For retro WS, Klonoa Moonlight Memories is kinda fun if you like action-puzzlers and Mega Man & Bass Challenger from the Future is pretty good if you get used to the different physics and controls. Gunpey is all right. Rainbow Islands WS has some cool aspects about it, such as the unlockables. (Hopefully Pocket Fighter gets a translation soon, as that one plays really great; another game called Star Hearts looks pretty good and might get translated soon by the translatorWS guy)

For WSC, Dicing Knight. is supposedly a pretty good action dungeon crawler and "Rockman EXE WS" is supposedly good. There's also the SaGa (The Final Fantasy Legend) remake. There's also an Arc the Lad spinoff that's almost ready for release.

There's a lot of Tamagotchi-esque shit on both (such as a few of the Digimon games and the NGE game). More experienced players for these systems should be able to tell you more about this topic, as I've just been dipping my toes in it for years.

Kek its library was the exact time when yugioh and pokemon were super popular and you can tell. Dangerously close to gacha gambling we have today except kids are not getting ripped off.

I just bought Gunpey EX so I guess I’m committing to getting a Wonderswan.

Is the Crystal that much better than the Color?

i have the color and its fine even with a stock screen

id tell you not to be a coomlector but its clearly too late for you

I’m not a coomlector, the Wonderswan just seems like a unique system given the dual orientation, and I’ve played Gunpey for years so I’d like to use the original system it was designed for.

Is the Color screen not as blurry as everyone says?

it's just that these screens look a little worse when photographed + frontlight reflection.

In the future it might be worth it. Honestly if you can afford to throw cash at something like this why not just go for it? One thing that I always found strange though. Why the triangle shaped buttons? Even the action buttons are.

Depending on how much you are ready to spend ?
WSC Crystal are better but colors are the only ones with an IPS screen mod.
You can find "dead" WSC dirt cheap that need power circuitry to be fixed and change screen later.

I would recommend a color or swan so you can have compatibility with both regular black & white Wonderswan games and the color ones. $100USD is a lot of money, they have a working Wonderswan core now for the Mister project

      The king of /vr/.
Just curious, how badly does the IPS screen kill the single AA battery? The WSC gets ~20 hours battery life with the normal passive matrix screen, right?

        Anonymous

Most people go for the battery mod after IPS screen installation.
Because even with good quality batteries you have 5/6 hours of playtime at most

I seriously have not noticed, but that's because I have a bunch of eneloops charged and ready. It seems to have lasted a while, and I don't really remember changing them often, but I have not measured.

With handhelds I feel like having the original unit in your hands is a much bigger part of the experience than for regular consoles. I prefer not to emulate handhelds.

Due to the reasoning that I don't want to be robbed on public transportation, I was not really into portables, only having the NGPC and TurboExpress. Played most of the Nintendo portables through the GBplayer on Gamecube using the HORI controller, so it is not much a difference to me.

I love handhelds but never checked out the swan, care to answer a few newbie questions?
Did I understand correctly the color can play the whole library? What are the differences between color and crystal versions?
        Are there available flashcart options?
        How's the game library?

Recently picked up neogeo pocket and been having a great time with it.

Looks like the post above answered as I would have. There are two formats, regular which has 8 shades of grey, and color, so having a color or swancrystal should give you both kinds, even though I mostly prefer the B&W games like Klonoa and Makaimura. The Swancrystal does seem to have sharper deeper images, but my last image has a modded modern screen for the color, which skews the results, you may want to consider the screen mod. I use a Flashmasta, and I was fortunate the maker chose to use a Final Fantasy cart as its shell, and that's a game I like. As mentioned the Flashmasta gets its transfer of ROMs via microSD, but not directly played from it. The game library appeals to me, but I tend to like bad games that few others like. The NGPC is also one of my most favorite portables, given that I have very little exposure to them.

I feel the same, do not mind emulating consoles but really prefer going the flashcard route with handhelds since the feel of the system is pretty important, especially for something like this with a weird layout or NGPC with its' stick thing.

        >I love handhelds but never checked out the swan, care to answer a few newbie questions?
        Sure.
        >Did I understand correctly the color can play the whole library?
        Yes.
        >What are the differences between color and crystal versions?
The Color has a passive matrix screen, the Crystal has an active matrix screen. Neither are backlit.
        >Are there available flashcart options?
There’s one, a FlashMasta that can have games uploaded to it via SD. Nothing that uses SD card though.
        >How's the game library?
Not great, honestly. There are only like 100 games. Lots of anime games. It has Gunpey, Klonoa, BeatMania, Puyo Puyo, and some other pick-up-and-play games like Side Pocket (billiards) but most of the games are probably not too appealing if you aren’t Japanese or a total weeb.
        >Recently picked up neogeo pocket and been having a great time with it.
Nice anon. NGP is better than Wonderswan, for sure, despite the even smaller library. The Wonderswan is still a fun, weird little curiosity though.

Funny thing, the guy I buy retro consolle from japan just proposed a WS Color (orange) to me yesterday. 100€ with 3 games, working.
Was looking for a b&w too. All I could find at a decent price are models that need the polarizer to be replaced. Did anyone got a replacement that doesn't give a green tint?
