I got about 50% the way through. I didn't shelf it completely I still plan on playing it. That being said the gameplay is really bad with the combat getting super stale by chapter 12 or so (that being said it's a great idea and feels good, it's just far too braindead). The story delivery and cinematics are great but probably free on youtube.

The new characters are all very 2d dimensionally written and react in almost stock-like manner. I'm having fun though.
They are side characters. I dont see how they are so different from any other JRPG.
It's a blemish that becomes obvious when the main characters and their new content in FF7R are so well written. Plus, I'm playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which, though a terrible game in general, has excellently written sidequests and minor characters. So if they can, then why can't FF7R

The gameplay is almost nothing like 13/13-2. It's closer to LR but it's a bit better. It's substantially better than 13,15, and 16s combat
I would say it is my favorite jrpg combat. But it will lose that spot in 2 months because Rebirth will be even better.
