I am having fun with it. Story is stupid but then again, every complain people have with the story was present in 1 and 2.
This is my take on it as well, not fan of the cutscenes, too much focus on personalities and not the fleet as a whole. I get the Homeworld wibe during gameplay, and it looks real nice. But the cutscenes take me a little away from it. So far I'd recommend it, I'm only halfway through the campaing, so it could get worse. I've yet to play the other modes yet, War Games looks fun though

What's wrong with the remastered version?
Uses the HW2 engine, which is fine from a technical standpoint, but doesn't have a lot of features of the first. First games had individual ships so you can do mixed formations and ships had fuel which HW2 doesn't handle. All that really does is make the Garden a GIANT pain in the ass. Normally you'd blow up refueling ships to kneecap the swarmers but lol no fuel so you just have to die until you can make multigun Corvettes.
There's probably a lot of other, more subtle changes but that's the one that I always think about because good god does it suck
when i played it, it was plain up broken, ai dosnt work, most missions dont work since the engine they ported to lacks half the features of the original game

Homeworld 2's engine has a lot of noticeable differences, like projectiles being a hitscan die roll rather than physical objects, which is massively crippling for fighters

4X is a pretendo kind of game where slow and dumbass people pretend to be big brained generals and click pass turn with uneventful, unimpactful consequences. It's not thriving, but also it's stable because there are a lot of these people.
Is 4x really doing better than RTS? Games like AoE 2 and AoE 4 have like 10-20k concurrent players on Steam and I'm pretty sure those are playable outside of Steam too, so real numbers are higher. Obviously they're not going to dethrone Fortnite any time soon but the numbers are fairly respectable, those games are doing fine even if they're not setting the world on fire. Is 4x really more popular than that?

The camera controls were total ass but they tried to fix it. The problem lies in the game itself: There's no RTS gaming here. You do almost nothing but to spam build ships and the next ship and move them to attack. There are no techs, so no decisions to be made, no upgrades but linear ones, so no tradeoffs, no hiding and supply distruption, no subsystem modules so no "base building" of sorts
It's basically nothing to do. The War Games is their main MP game but since they didn't develop the actual MP first there's nothing interesting you can do as a player vs the AI but to spam as well.
TLDR: it's not even designed as a game. Its an auto battler and has less features and gameplay than 1 and 2 combined.

Story is weak, the cutscenes showing anything other than the Bogdanovs are actually pretty good, which is why the goofy look of their faces is all the more distracting. The gameplay is good, unit pathfinding is iffy. Maps are a little small, but the missions are interesting. The sound & graphics are great, and there's lots of nice immersion details like in Deserts of Kharak. The Wargames mode is a lot of fun. Selecting units is tricky, but I feel like it's because I still play on a 1080p monitor and I've noticed a lot of recent games seem meant for higher resolutions and it's harder to see things.
For people complaining about the new controls, before you even start playing, the game asks you if you want to use the new or classic control system.

kharak had a fine story. Homeworld was always more about mood, tone and scale over lore consistency or specific plot points. kharak nailed the look and feel, this new shit is bad on every level.
They've also been making random minecraft games. It's not really surprising now that they aren't the same studio. Its pretty weird, feels like a team of high skill vets started HW 3 and it was finished by a bunch of amateurs so there's a strange mix of cool looking and awful shit in the same product.

I saw that cutscene about the giant, ugly, black queen telling Imogen to "wield hyperspace" like it's some magic voodoo for the big b***h to wield. Fricking repulsive what they've done to Homeworld, plus the animation was some of the most unfitting and exaggerated shit I've ever seen, that b***h emotes like she's from some sort of bad cartoon movie or something, holy frick. The Homeworld I remember was a subdued yet highly atmospheric and immersive game that managed to get a whole lot done with very little. It was good BECAUSE it did a lot with very little. Now there's some black queen b***h or some shit talking at the screen while the worst animations known to man play. Shit's outright disrespectful, obviously this doesn't deserve your money, doubly so at full price.

Plenty of people have gone over this. It basically doesn't exist. Any relevant gameplay mechanics that actually made HW combat interesting or tactical are gone with nothing to replace them. It isn't even the case that BBI tried something new and it just didn't work out, they just didn't try anything in place of what already worked.
Sorry, Homeworld was always a series where the atmosphere, setting and story had a huge impact. If they shat that up it's over. I love the older Homeworld games but if I were to rate them purely on gameplay I'd say they don't rank among the very best RTS games to me once the novelty of full 3D space wears off. The whole package, with the story included, was kick-ass though. With the story and setting fricked in 3 it's basically DoA, but given that I did play the demo I'd say it's mediocre at best and seemed lacking to me. The UI also felt really bad, like there was shit all over my screen, it looked like one of those bad UI meme images where the whole screen is spammed with crap.

you can plan attacks way in advance and bring bombers in from atop the galactic plane as you move bigger guys in to brawl while being mindful of firing arcs and how best to maximize yours while minimizing weaknesses and finding that sweetspot gap in the enemy fleet so it isn't a zerg smash, right?

It has 3D environment, but that doesn't matter as ship facing doesn't matter when it comes to damage received. So flanking is pointless. Just blob up your fleet, move towards enemy, and they cycle through groups pressing your ability button until either you or the enemy dies.

You didn't play any of those did you? Ships had armour facing, so hitting them on flanks resulted in more damage. There was a point to maneuvering around the enemy. As was there for using bombers to destroy specific ship modules. But HW3 doesn't have that either.
