Story isn’t the best and makes no sense at some points but the combat is fun if you like to minmax things. Also the environment and enemy designs are top notch along with the soundtrack.

imagine a fifteen year old boy smoking crack and making up a story about how he's going to get the popular girl he has a crush on, then makes up more and more insane shit as he goes along, with the absolute dumbest twists you can imagine. every character except his self insert badass and the girl he loves is irrelevant
ah yes the combat is so much fun I love drawing broken spells early in the game and then beat every single enemy even bosses with just squall spamming attacks, doing nothing else until ultimecia has a DPS check out of nowhere, forcing me to reskill everything into defense for this one fight. God tier gameplay
Don't forget actively avoiding fights for most of the game so you completely miss out on being able to obtain upgrade materials for weapons because monsters just up and disappear if you level too high.

Character models look fantastic, backgrounds not so much. I noticed this with RE fan HD upgrades. Where the character models pulled from Dissidia or something?

Leveling up in the game is what makes the game fun, enemies actually start posing a threat when you level up and you can make use of the game's systems. Junctioning GF to unlock skills is a fantastic system, but junctioning magic/drawing magic is legitimately one of the worst ideas they've ever had.
It has the best or 2nd best OST in the series and the side content is pretty fun to do. Story isn't that good but not terrible, I like the junction system but it's divisive, a lot of people don't seem to like it

There are times when piracy can ensure a better experience for the user, not just related to the cost. FF8 as a physical disk or ISO works flawlessly whereas the steam version is a buggy pile of garbage. It is abandonware that's constantly on sale to capitalize on the lack of availability of a solid product.
Unironically my favorite FF. Unfortunately the PC version has some issues so it's hard to suggest someone spend money on it. As far as I know they have only fixed the midi audio tracks and nothing else.

IT's an access problem. If SE sold the PSX rom, then people would buy it. It is the superior version of the game.
