Should I continue this?

Years ago I was working on a ROM hack of Pokemon Silver, put quite a bit of effort in, but put it on pause when I no longer had time, and slowly I forgot about it. At least until recently.

It's been a long time and I'm thinking of trying to pick it back up, but I'm kind of lost. Is Pokecommunity still the best place to discuss ROM hacking? Also, would anyone actually play it? There are so many Pokemon hacks out there now it makes my head spin, and it looks like more recent ones have set quite a high standard. Would it get lost in the sea of hacks? For that matter, how many people play gen 2 hacks these days?

Pic is a screencap of my hack as of its last revision

Honestly does not look too bad OP
I'd say maybe make some different trees too to make the background less samey
And add more of the tile patterns to the lamp Sprite
And I guess try to make the bench fit too (not saying it's bad but it looks like it came from a different game)

It's a bit tough with the GBC, you only get one background layer and limited tiles to work with so it's hard to make things seamless. Even in the official games they often fudge it and use tiles with mismatched backgrounds/palettes if you look closely, it comes with the territory of Game Boy graphics. Blank makes it look at least passable against other road textures

Also the tile underneath is blank in the daytime because the lampposts get a palette-based lighting effect at night.

Looks very comfy, however, I'd turn down the saturation/brightness a touch and increase the contrast on the grass. You don't have to dedicate hours every day to it, just work on it bit by bit. Don't give up!

It is a bit oversaturated in emulators, but on an actual GBC with its washed out screen, I found it made the colors pop a lot more

I like the tilesets OP, what were the main changes made in it?

Almost everything. The tilesets, metatiles and maps were completely overhauled. I borrowed some tile graphics from other games but it's been long enough that I can't remember which.

How does one make a Gen 2 hack?

Nowadays, you clone the disassembly from github, make changes, and recompile into a new ROM:

If you know Z80 assembly you can do basically anything with the games now.

    >Is Pokecommunity still the best place to discuss ROM hacking?
I think it's pretty good. Whack a Hack is nice too.
    >Also, would anyone actually play it?
I would, specially if you didn't add Fakemon.
    >There are so many Pokemon hacks out there now it makes my head spin
    I personally like that
    >more recent ones have set quite a high standard
I have mixed feelings about that, I don't mind playing a ROM Hack that feels more rough on the edges. That would still be more polished than most fangames in the 00s.
    >Would it get lost in the sea of hacks?
    What do you mean?
    >For that matter, how many people play gen 2 hacks these days?
at least with my friends, more people than people who play gen 3 hacks
most play both, but much more gen 2 hacks

Can you talk more about your rom hack. Are there any changes besides tilesets? What is the pool of Pokemon? Is it just gen 2 or are you going to add cross-evos or beta mons or something else? Is this johto revisited or another region?

I stopped work before a lot of those things were decided, but here's some stuff I definitely planned on:
      >no fakemon; just my favorites from every gen (gen 2 has a hard limit of 255 pokemon, so I'd pick my top 255 out of the 1000+ that exist, all would be obtainable without having to trade)
      >totally new region, not based on any that came before (region map already finalized)
      >gyms based on themes, such as "things you might see at the beach", rather than based around a single type, like water
      >physical/special split (pretty trivial to implement these days)
      >some freedom to the order gyms can be challenged; leaders would select their teams based on how many badges you have
      >secondary post-game map, similar to FRLG's Sevii Islands (internally this would be based on Kanto)
      >better use of the GBC's graphical capabilities (would no longer be playable on monochrome GBs, but in return would take advantage of features like the GBC's doubled VRAM)
      >should be 100% functional on real GBC hardware, not just emulators (I have a GB everdrive so this is easy to test; in its current state everything works 100%)
      >totally new soundtrack (currently have 10+ songs that function properly in the GSC music engine)

        >Is Pokecommunity still the best place to discuss ROM hacking?
They're cucks that will ban a hack and its creator for one hidden off-colour joke, even if they aren't racist themselves.
        >Would it get lost in the sea of hacks?
Being generic has never stopped any hacks from getting popular. People only care about high-enough quality assets and the region being new.

        Daring today, aren't we?

Sounds like pretty much everything I want out of a Gen 2 hack. I'd love to play it when it's finished.

Looks and sounds like fun so far, op. I hope you'll continue at whatever pace works best for you until you're satisfied with calling it done and post it for everyone to enjoy. Will it get lost in the sea of romhacks that are out there these days? Probably. But it's not about that, it's about making what YOU want to see exist, and if you want it then surely there's other people who would enjoy it too. I'll be rooting for you!

The new tiles are good but they kinda conflict with the player character sprite, since the tiles are muh more detailed than him.

Is there any way to blend the dirt tiles with the grassy tiles better? If I remember correctly you have 8 palettes available, im sure you can sacrifice /edit one of them. It's the most jarring aspect of the old game.
