The free version is way more "playable" than the Steam version, no joke here, is due to the dissapearance of hotkeys on workshops and other menus that made crafting shit and giving orders quicker and less tedious.
The free version might be ugly to look at and need that you download a newbie pack with textures and hacks to made your entrance more confortamble, but its better at the hour of actually playing the game

About 80% of my time spent in rimworld seemed to be trying to stop my colonists from being completely and utterly braindead and actually build stuff in a somewhat effective manner instead of taking what feels like years, moronic cat wrangler seems like an apt description.

Normal playtrough lasts about 50 hours.
The base Rimworld game is about as expensive as Factorio and it has 3 DLCs which add content that should be in the base game.
