This should be updated. Ys VIII and IX can say whatever but YS V does have a translation, the game is incredibly easy and pretty short so worth trying. I thought it was fine and probably better than SEVEN

Play I&II. It's fun and classic
After that you can play Origin.

Don't listen to timeline gays, the connections between the games are Dark Souls tier (i.e. barely any), play in release order, otherwise you'll be jumping between old and new games with vast differences in gameplay and QoL and it'll sour your experience.

Origin, Oath in Felghana, Lacrimosa of Dana and Monstrum Nox are the best games, so if you just want to play the best the series has to offer, then play these and move on. First two are isometric single character action games (somewhat like Hades but no rogue-lite elements), the latter two are 3rd person party games, similar to Tales of (but with seamless battles). The series is 30+ years old and quality varies greatly, so no real reason to play everything unless you're already a fan.

I played only Origin, Lacrimosa of Dana and Monstrum Nox, currently playing Ys I.
Nox is easily the worst for now, but that doesn't mean it's bad, just average. You should definitely play Dana and basically everything else before Nox, as this game has a lot of callbacks to other games.
Ys I is being a lot of fun, but I understand if some people don't like it, its fast-paced combat system looks barebones, but works very well.
Origin is one of my favourite games of all times, it's very hack'n'slash with platforming element. Bosses may feel unfair at times, but you just need an almost compulsory power-up or one more level and it should be enough.

Why haven't you played Felghana if you loved Origin so much? It's almost literally the same game, and Adol has the same moves as Yunica.

I bought Felghana during the last Steam sales, after I & II I'll be playing that and Napishtim

Origins, Oath, and Ark are the peak of the series, so try those, though Ark is meant to be played after the first 5 games of the series, the story doesn't really matter.
Not Ys but I think Gurumin, Zwei: The Ilvard Insurection, and Legend of Nayuta might be similar but I haven't played them, so someone can correct me on that.

If you can't get into those you can try Seven, Memories, Lacrimosa, or Monstrum Nox, but they're nothing special.

If you want a good classic game with somewhat Archaic mechanics Play Ys I & II or Ys IV Dawn of Ys on the PC Engine.

    Avoid any game not mentioned.

Oath In Felghana is unironically in the top 5 games I have ever played.

And considering that I hate anything story wise and didn't pay attention to any of the dialogues, you can trust that the gameplay is top tier.

It's best to think of Ys as several different series

Bump combat trilogy - I, II, IV (Dawn is better than Mask)
Napishtim Engine games - VI, Oath, Origins
Party games - VII, Memories, VIII, and IX
    Oddball games - III, V

The only games with any major continuity are I, II, IV, and Origins which is a prequel. For the rest of the games it doesn't really matter which order you play them in.
My favorite are the bump combat games because they have the most SOVL. I recommend the PCE versions over Eternal or Chronicles because of the soundtrack and Dark Fact is not obnoxiously difficult.

Only Origins is decent, gameplay-wise. All the rest are PSPcore low budget trash. All of them are not RPGs.

Play them with a good gamepad.

All excellent ARPGs would be played on a good gamepad.
