Play 9 if you want a more streamlined experience, something you can easily get into without too much struggle. Play 8 when you're more familiar with the series, and find the JP version due to that version having no voice acting and running faster as a result.
I had some trouble with IX because the game expects you to play and grind with your friends.
You needn't grind, just make a party at Stornway and go from there, get a healer and a warrior and the fourth slot you can add whoever else. If you want even more fun, get rid of the pre-made party members and make your own. Half of the fun of IX was making your own team of misfits. And due to the online service being discontinued, get a gameshark and hack all the exclusive gear in your inventory, especially the endgame equipment.
IX is legit one of the best DQ games I've ever played and I've only done multiplayer a few times. As a singleplayer title, it's solid for what it is.
True fun of dq 9 is doing a solo run.
Probably the most fun I had with a dragon quest game even if some bosses drove me nuts.
I have never heard anyone recommend 9 ever. It is a travesty of game because they backed out of the multiplayer focus midway through development and half assed the whole thing instead.
Why you lying?
DQIX can be beaten 99% without friends, the 1% missing would be from upgrading Erin's Inn, but even so is only for show as maxing the Inn looks doesn't give you anything worth a damn.
If you play IX next, make sure to emulate so you can use cheats or something to add DLC items. Nintendo DS wifi died a long time ago and playing on a cart means you will never complete IX, and the game was designed for grottoes and multiplayer. I think you should play VII next, personally, and on the original PSX not 3DS (it really ruins the pacing and exploration). VIII is a great choice too though and is actually my favorite.
I like VIII's voice acting. Yangus alone makes it worth it.
>VIII
>more familiar
VIII is super beginner friendly.
>find the JP version due to that version having no voice acting
>he doesn't like yangus' voice
Love a duck! Stone the crows! Blimey O'Riley!
Wot a gay!
I'm not knocking the voice acting, but I noticed battles took a lot longer due to it and the JP version running faster.
Each class has its own unique skills and a tree that gives you permanent stats for that specific character. You can give a mage some of the Paladin/Warrior's health and DEF and the Warrior an extra boost in MP. Revocation is necessary for higher grotto maps and extra skill points. Once you max out a weapon skill tree, you can use that weapon in any vocation (Warrior with a wand, etc.).
8 is way better
9 if you want to build your party how you want and enjoy playing dress up with your characters
8 if you want a larger-scale world to explorer and want a more narrative-focused experience. Or if you like Jessica's breasts. The 3DS version looks worse but plays much faster. You can easily mod it so it has the orchestral soundtrack as well.
9 for fairy sex
Play III. Its the only good DQ game
play 8 and 3
play 2 and 3, then 8
I love nine so much I bought it twice. Easily one of my favorite games of all time
>I love nine so much I bought it twice.
Same, I had to upgrade my inn. By the time I found some friends to play with, I already maxed it out.
Played all DQs 4-11 in 2023 and would highly recommend 8 if you liked 11. I disliked 9 pretty greatly but some people adore it.
I think I asked this before but how does IX's vocation system work? Was it like BD/FF V, or a more watered down version like DQ VII had, where you can't mix and match as easily as the former.
Each class levels independently and has their own skill trees, some shared. Most passives go between class changes.
Idk how those earlier games work, but nine is pretty straightforward. Each vocation has like 7 sub things you can pump exp into, weapon skills and specific class bossting things. Reaching certain milestones in those skills nets you abilities and stat bonuses. Those persist regardless of the character's vocation. I thought it was pretty easy to mix and match with that but I was also a kid with near infinate time to grind.
Each class has their own level.
So whenever you change to a new class you start from level 1.
However all the skills and passives you unlock and all the skill points you accumulated in each class carries over and when you change back to an old class you resume at the level when you reclassed.
Fricking around with this is very fun during a solo run.
One night I listened to this and almost teared up.
Still remember all the beats from just sitting with my ds open and clapping along like a little moron (:
What was your defacto team for fighting legacy bosses?
>Armamentalist (Me)
>Priest
>Paladin
>Warrior
I sometimes swapped out the Warrior with a Martial Artist for raw speed/damage or Mage for weaker bosses.
Paladin(me)
Warrior respecced into gladiator(male)
Mage(Female)
Priest reclassed into sage(female)
I still need to grind those out someday. I kinda burnt out during my hunt for high level grottoes but I'll be back.
Play 4 on the DS.
5 and 8 are the other REALLY good ones. 3 and 4 are good if you really liked those.
I'm privy to 7 here but that game is a fricking odyssey and I can 100% understand why some people may be put off by it.
What's the best endgame vocation for a solo run of DQIX? I was thinking armamentalist or sage.
