They're both about equal, 5 has more weapons and mechanics and playing a Ranger is less miserable but 4 has better levels. Get whichever is cheaper.

4 has better maps, 5 has really good gameplay improvements.
5 also has far more public lobbies, if you're not bringing friends in with you.

Depth Crawlers are great if you know how to use them. The trick is to crab walk diagonally with it. It'll actually make it move significantly fastet.

5 is better in multiple ways, particularly if you want to play Air Raider. Much easier to target air strikes effectively in 5.
4 is more fun and silly but the ranger got nerfed hard compared to 3.
5 is srs bsns and they nerfed the air raider hard to give half of his stuff to the ranger to buff him. Also the upgrade system in 5 is absolute garbage.

Also EDF6 is guaranteed to be at peak multiplayer whenever this comes out. Lots of people will be grinding it out for years.

Whichever you choose just don't use wing diver in the beginning please. Only sub 80 IQ weeb shitters use wing diver. Honestly get tired of these buttholes flying off and dying behind enemy lines. Maybe pick it up once you get some armor and know how to play the game better.
Wing diver is 10x easier to play than any other class, although I played the entire game up through hardest on singleplayer before I ever joined a multiplayer game so maybe it's different in MP especially with no weapon choice at the start.

meanwhile 5 doesn't have them at all, and were replaced with suppress guns which are absolutely useless dogshit.
If you get a limpet sniper and a decent tank it's not too bad, but it is frequently very annoying as you generally have to tailor your shit to the mission.
In 5 I've completed most of the story by myself. His effective defensive tools are the crawler, turrets, and the best limpet sniper you can get your hands on. Yes, the sniper one. It easily outclasses the other kinds in damage.
5, I can't go back to 4 anymore since you don't unlock anything for the class you aren't playing at all.

I already have 35% in EDF6 and got sick of playing with japanese people only, also I know I will need a new save once the real version comes out and I don't want to burn myself out. Things are looking pretty bleak but it will probably come eventually

because I don't read or speak Japanese outside of memorizing what the default message shortcuts everyone uses mean
can't coordinate with anyone meaningfully.
Although I understand the general outline of the game's plot I don't get to enjoy the kino of the dialogue.
The save thing is the main reason, though. If the save carried over to the world version I would grind out as much as I want, but at the end of the day it's pointless to get 100% in a version I am going to drop instead of the version I will play indefinitely.

You can sprint as a soldier in 5. That's the biggest change for me.
The missions are more varied in 4.1 though. In 5 I feel like every missions are like "fight three waves of aliens ok buddy" and that's it.
And the grinding is equally as horrifying in both games.
I still haven't 100%'d 5, so I'm fine with the wait for 6...

5 has some QoL features that make it better than 4. But both are a lot of fun.
5 has more QoL but the difficulty of levels and the sheer hordes you face feels lessened, and 4's dialogue and "story" is just more fun and gets you hype. I would honestly start with 4 then play 5 if you enjoyed it and decide for yourself. It would be hard to go from 5 to 4 because of the QoL changes.
