Not exactly, basically the season system together with the day and nighy system changes what quests are available to you at any time. So during the hot season, you can't do quests in the desert (and the volcano iirc) so any monster exclusive to those maps are unavailable.
But I still want G-Rank
Does it at least have more monsters than FU?

the game is a pretty unique experience, especially the online (10 player lobbies are as fun and chaotic as they sound) but outside of the unique ideas it has theres not really much. i put like 80 hours into it and just kinda stopped, mainly because you have to HR grind to progress online and its a pretty slow process. i will say that dundorma is WAY better in dos than 4U and its not even close, holy shit. easily the best online hub

I don't mean that the weapons are balanced when compared to each other, I mean that the weapon's movesets individually are typically very well balanced.
A lot of monster hunter games, even the modern ones have an issue where 90%+ of the time you want to just spam the same attack over and over because it's your best attack. I feel like a very strong point of 4U is that this is mostly alleviated and a lot of weapons have good reasons to use a larger part of their moveset, which makes those weapons (And essentially combat) much more fun and engaging.
Of course this isn't fully true, all of the top tier weapons like GS are still just draw slash spam, CB follows a strict followchart, and IG can also be boiled down to spamming one button over and over, but otherwise I feel like all the other weapons have some of the best movesets they have in any of the games.

The real problem with the top meta choices is that they just shit out too much damage as it's always been.

Start with Freedom.
All 3rd gen games are good, 3U probably my favorite because it has the most monsters and swimming. Don't bother with anything before that boomers lie to you saying it's peak MH but in reality all monster have a recycled moveset with maybe 1 or 2 attacks to differentiate them, and they basically cycle through only 4 of them even in G-rank.
