That art style is trash, but there should be a separate (not gamefreak or the homosexual mobile devs that made the DP remakes) dev team making 2d pokemon games on a 3 year cadence. The 3d version has very different gameplay and it's getting further and further away from the classics every release.

Octo-wiener Traveller is a great game and has great visuals much better than anything Game Freak has ever put out.
