dragon, much like ghost, used to be a special type reserved for very unique pokemon

Maybe, but aside from those two types were also some of the last ones implemented, which means they had less time to playtest them before the game came out. There's a similar problem with a lot of the new Pokemon in GS, they didn't really know how powerful they'd be so they ended up in obscure places (I don't know why Houndoom was among them though, maybe they were just overly paranoid).

Personally, even in the context of Gen 1, I think making it a Dragon type would’ve been a good idea. More of that “raise the weakest, most pathetic Pokémon into a powerhouse” shtick it already has.

Maybe raise the evolution level to 30 too

No, because the design based on a carp kite, not a dragon

A water/dragon at level 20, for only 500 bucks after the first gym, would probably break the game. Dragon resists the next three gyms, and makes Blaine a joke for a 7th gym leader. If Magikarp was introduced today, it'd probably be a max friendship after level 40 knowing waterfall evolution so you're forced to carry the joke all game

You could get a salamence on route 3, gen 7 didn't give a frick.

          and yet Nidoking was okay

I thought of that right after I posted. At least Nido is weak to misty and doesn't learn any ground moves for surge. Not even dig, which is so stupid it had to be for a reason

            >You could get a salamence on route 3
I had no idea, that's actually really cool.
When I went to that route I caught Rufflet instead, so I had two NFE Pokemon all the way to victory road.
My friends used to make fun of me for always bringing the "killer chick".

Because it had 45 les BST points and a fricking joke of an attack stat next to Gyarados' 125. And a Special stat of 100 (in Gen 1), meaning it wasn't taking damage from water, grass or fire moves due to type resistance and GFW being special attacks.
Play the game instead of speedrunning it on twitch, spastic.

            lotta seething and assumptions
            yes Gyarados is stronger
but Nidoking is also insanely good and takes even less time to get

And is beside the point. The issue in question was concerning Gyara not getting Dragon typing and it was due to that making it FAR too strong for a 'mon designed to be a mid-region water starter replacement (comparable BST to 'toise, but dual-typed and outright better). So what if the overgrown rabbit could solo the game, it still wasn't a factor in why they didn't give the monster mid-region water type Dragon on top.

Why not. It's not like it would make it any more competitive these days.

      Of course it would.
Gyarados is only used as a support mon with intimidate, taunt, and similar stuff. The better it is defensively the more competitive it will be, its offensive matchups don't matter.

Gyarados has been powercrept. Even if it were part Dragon, it would still prominently be used that way.

He's as usable as ever in VGC. Being part dragon would make it an even better supporter.

They could have made mega gyarados a dragon/water type instead of dark/water.

Dragon was made to make Dragonite special, notice it even comes after the bird legends in the dex, it's a real big deal. It's the ace pokemon of the final elite 4 so they make dragon resist the fire/water/grass type of your starter(+ electric to nulify the weakness it would get from being part flying)

Plus in gen 1 there were no abilities(levitate) so if Gyarados (and Charizard/Aerodactyl) were Dragon they would not be immune to earthquake and fissure which is a bigger priority(thematically/logically) than giving them the extra resistances of dragon type. In other words, you can say they should be their main type/flying/dragon but since there's a two type limit, from a practical standpoint rescinding dragon over rescinding flying is a better call.
