>I can't think of a more underrepresented genre
It isn't.
*YOU* are ignorant of the genre. The fact you can only list 3 titles screams that. It is not "underrepresented" at all. It's your knowledge that is lacking, so humble yourself and recognize your place before you make arrogant posts.
im so glad i have my own autism under control. Post like this feels bad.

I think popful mail would count in the genre and that games so good on Sega CD
>say something moronic >"oh my god I can't believe I got called out on my ignorance!!"
lmao
why are idiots always angry and defensive at having the truth revealed?

If you were projecting any harder, your posts would show up on the fricking moon.
This doesn't look like it was officially localized back in the day. Either fan translation or an unlicensed release like Soap panic/Bubble Bath Babes, Krazy Kreatures, and Dudes with Attitude were.
>Those trees in top right look hella comfy >Damn these side shots all remind me of wonderboy >Looks at title >Westone
Of course. Thank you very much anon. I will play this game.
It's a bit short but it's a really good game, very underrated. For 89 the combat and interface are incredibly snappy and the art direction look amazing with those full black outlines on everything which really wasn't a standard at the time and which make it look like it could be a modern retro game
But really it all comes down to Xanadu, literally one of the firsts, if not the first, "RPG phenomenom" in Japan was a sidescrolling A-RPG although the battles were top down
I just played this for the first time a few months ago and was blown away, I had never really liked that genre before. I put in part 2 or 3 next and it was some sort of horizontal shmup
There's a thin line between Action-Adventure and Action-RPG. Most people can't even tie their own shoelaces, so it's no surprise they can't wrap their shit for brains around the differences.
Does Dragon View count? It plays more like a beat 'em up RPG, but there are platformer elements as well. It's one of my personal favorites for the system.
>its era
From the 80s? But what is even janky about it? You run and slash or cast magic. It's very quick and quite brutal looking considering the graphics (which are amazing).
>what is even janky about it
No knockback when hitting enemies
No recovery frames and enemies deal damage every frame when touching you, so the weakest enemy can drain your health just by touching you for a second
Kek, I think I saw the same playthrough. I'm kinda surprised this game isn't brought up more, given that it was made by HAL and is an FDS exclusive which doesn't require Japanese knowledge.
Some of these don't actually count since they're missing one or more of the things that define the genre: >2D side view >EXP/level system >Gold/coins >Upgradeable weapons & armor >Key items >Towns >NPCs >Side quests >Ability to return to previous areas
As someone else said, there really aren't that many. There are way more action/adventures which can be similar but not the same.
>side quests
That's a stretch, a lot of NES RPGs doesn't even have clearly defined main quests, much less some kind of structured side quests. Does Zelda 2 have side quests? It has optional things to do but are those quests really
Metroidvanias are usually 1-3 big maps with no towns, no dialogue-only NPCs, no purchasable weapons or armor and only some have experience points or gold. In general, upgrades in Metroidvania only come after beating a boss.
Good for them, they didn't get enough credit for such an amazing indie game. Is the nes port of Gallious worth it? That looks like the easiest to emulate.
I played that version myself and I liked it a lot. It has scrolling unlike the MSX version. Note that this game really wants you to draw your own maps, I did so myself by taking a bunch of screenshots and stitching them together
On the topic of RPGs in which random battles are on a side view, this is another one but it's not very good. Only point of interest is the plot twist at the end.
>I can't think of a more underrepresented genre
i can
first-person action rpgs
you got quite a few on computers in the 90s, the peak as it were, then almost none at all on any other /vr/ consoles
you got like shining in the darkness...
and thats pretty much all i can think of lol
just found a cool one on GBA
mazes of fate
1st person dungeon crawling and puzzles, with some shining in the darkness kind of overworld where you like go to bars/towns and chat with characters to get quests
seems pretty cool so far for some GBA game made by a no-name argentinaian studio. you can even make your own custom class. i just went with the default rogue
some pretty cool music too
just a shame it has to come out of a GBA
idk who or what that is but so far. imo, he did a bang up job
pretty weird music. almost reminds of the more recent windows 96 albums. strange but still catchy
>you got quite a few on computers in the 90s
Plus 100s in the 80s
i mean thats kinda what i meant. it was huge on computers until the 90s and then it just died
i suppose morrowind "saved" the 1st person action rpg genre, but that took things in a totally different direction. this game, by contrast, is a straight up old school 1st person crawler
Damn bro I'm just asking for some recs.
I just remembered these:
>Ys III
>Castlevania II (sort of)
>I'm just asking for some recs
Then take it to the proper board.
>noooo stop talking about retro games!
OP had to hide the fact he was recgayging.
Wonderboy in Monsterland is the perfect mix between Action, Platformer, RPG and Arcade
there arent that many to be honest
the homie that typed this would actually say that shit irl hahaha
fricking sperg relax
>say something moronic

Rambo II.
I’d say metroid fits that but I’m not sure how autistic the “rpg” definition is, it’s just as much an rpg as zelda
Ys III
Good game but the final boss is bullshit.
>jump and hit exactly 1 pixel with a sword that only reaches half a pixel from the player
What's the best version of each Ys game?
For Ys III, either the X68000/Mega Drive version or the PS2 remake
>Sega
I don't think so, fammo
Then just pick the X68000 version, brain dead snob
What about the first 2 Ys?
They're overhead view. Ys III was the only sidescroller in the series as far as I know.
Cosmo Police - Galivan is more of a middle ground between Metroid and Zelda 2, but it does have RPG elements in the shape of exp/level/spells etc
and technically Super Chinese 3, as well as its sequel Super Ninja Boy, is an action RPG with sidescrolling elements as well
and then there is this, it's an RPG but the random encounters are sidescrolling action
This doesn't look like it was officially localized back in the day. Either fan translation or an unlicensed release like Soap panic/Bubble Bath Babes, Krazy Kreatures, and Dudes with Attitude were.
Reminds me of Summon Night: Swordcraft Story.
Anime is a fun watch btw
>Those trees in top right look hella comfy

Of course. Thank you very much anon. I will play this game.

same as the above
and since you asked for it might as well throw this one in...
Looking at these screenshot compilations makes me feel good. Thanks for sharing anon.
But really it all comes down to Xanadu, literally one of the firsts, if not the first, "RPG phenomenom" in Japan was a sidescrolling A-RPG although the battles were top down
Xanadu on PC-88 looks typical for the model of PC-88 it first came on, but how about a Sharp X1, PC-98, or Fujitsu FM-7 version?
I find it hard to believe Xanadu became a phenomenon over there before Wizardry did.
it wasnt. wizardry, black onyx, and hydlide were massive. xanadu is 1985.
Rygar NES
The Metroidvania genre
Popful Mail
Monster World IV
Symphony of the Night
Saw this site shared before, dedicated to the genre
https://alexlandgren.wixsite.com/platform-adventure
i can literally think of thousands. try xanadu for one. galious. goonies 2. rygar. relics. drasle family.
>i can literally think of thousands
Name 500 then, big shot.
>jap names
>games that arent in the same genre
kys
>no noo dont say xanadu
are you moronic anon?
get your bump combat shit the frick outta this thread
or this other version with a different layout, might have more info/games that havent been ported over yet
https://platformadventure.weebly.com/
pretty good and comprehensive site i must say.
Loads of information, but barely any screenshots or ratings.
Be the first.
I'd rather be the last.
>claims the term "metroidvania" possibly originated in the 80's
>check the source
>no mention of "metroidvania", only "metroid"
Aaaaand dropped. Such moronation.
>no mention of Wonder Boy
I know it's pretty basic but come on people.
Funny enough I was just about to suggest Wonder Boy/Monster World. Some are better then others but I think it’s a damn good series all throughout.
I just played this for the first time a few months ago and was blown away, I had never really liked that genre before. I put in part 2 or 3 next and it was some sort of horizontal shmup
If you liked Monster World you should play The Dragons Trap immediately, much better than Monster World imo. One of my favourite games of all time.
They are looking for games with RPG systems. Wonderboy doesn't have one.
There's a thin line between Action-Adventure and Action-RPG. Most people can't even tie their own shoelaces, so it's no surprise they can't wrap their shit for brains around the differences.
Define "RPG systems." Do you just mean experience points?
Does Dragon View count? It plays more like a beat 'em up RPG, but there are platformer elements as well. It's one of my personal favorites for the system.
That's the best one and basically Zelda 2 but in good
Front Mission: Gun Hazard
I'm gonna try this out, looks cool.
I prefer Zeliard than Zelda 2.
Zeliard is amazing.
>Zeliard
I tried Zeliard a couple of time but it's just too janky compared to other games from it's era. The combat just feels like shit
>its era
From the 80s? But what is even janky about it? You run and slash or cast magic. It's very quick and quite brutal looking considering the graphics (which are amazing).
>what is even janky about it
No knockback when hitting enemies

(You) are smoking crack.
Fire Bam by HAL for the Famicom Disk System is one I don't see mentioned too often. It's very clearly inspired by Zelda 2
Never heard of it, looks fun I'll check it out. There is also Chesterfield but I didn't beat that one, the layouts weren't very good.
HAL sure made some strange decisions when promoting it. Not sure why they have him those horrifically large hands.
Thought that art was CG for a second and my brain nearly exploded from the implications.
So... I looked for a video of a playthrough of this and got to see the bosom of a troon. Thanks guy.
Kek, I think I saw the same playthrough. I'm kinda surprised this game isn't brought up more, given that it was made by HAL and is an FDS exclusive which doesn't require Japanese knowledge.

Gargoyle's Quest?
faxanadu was too good that its not worth even competing with that game. best sound track.
Battle of Olympus
Getsu Fuma Den
This game is the shit, no exp so idk if counts as an rpg
Rambo
I remember struggling a lot with this one as a kid.
Cadash
did you get the shield? did you have the staff of fennel?
>I can't think of a more underrepresented genre
You mean almost every Castlevania game starting from SotN?
Metroidvanias are literally their own genre.
Honestly what is the difference? An overworld?
Metroidvanias are usually 1-3 big maps with no towns, no dialogue-only NPCs, no purchasable weapons or armor and only some have experience points or gold. In general, upgrades in Metroidvania only come after beating a boss.
Let me add magic sword to the list
Maze of Gallious
not part of this made up genre by so called experts here
Thanks for the suggestion. This is the inspiration behind la mulana right?
Yeah, and it's getting an official remake by the same devs.
Very well I'll try it, and it looks like it got translated recently.
Don't play the NES version, the game design is inferior.
On the topic of RPGs in which random battles are on a side view, this is another one but it's not very good. Only point of interest is the plot twist at the end.
I feel sad about not finding this games when I was a child, I would be amazed (still am but y'kno)
>I can't think of a more underrepresented genre

some pretty cool music too
just a shame it has to come out of a GBA
Fun fact: The music was composed by Juan Linietsky of Godot fame.
idk who or what that is but so far. imo, he did a bang up job
pretty weird music. almost reminds of the more recent windows 96 albums. strange but still catchy
i mean thats kinda what i meant. it was huge on computers until the 90s and then it just died

>you got quite a few on computers in the 90s
Plus 100s in the 80s
Was there anything for Genesis
Cadash, Ys III, and it's not fully side scrolling but Exile.
Anyone collecting these into an infographic? Someone else should so I don't have to.
astalon
oh wait I'm on /vr/, well it's a faux-retro game. Dunno if those are alright here but point stands
green text all the games mentioned and i might do it
>Big Castlevania fan, mostly classic
>Only metroidvania I played was sotn
Am I missing out?
The GBA and DS Castlevanias are all fantastic, though none are quite on the level of Symphony. They're all have their own unique strengths though.
More under appreciated, but I love Demon's Crest. The art direction and music is really good, plus the bosses were fun, imo.
