There's nothing difficult about hardcore. The content is still the same easy shit, it just deletes your save, so everything takes forever.

it's literally the same exact game

and the same 10+ year old hyper optimized raid strategies

          Anonymous

          But it does.
I haven't played vanilla, and it's very easy to die in TBC or WotLK, even on trash. One death - 1 dps or healer removed from the raid, making it very hard. Let's say in WotLK Naxx if you lose 6 members, you can't make it. I've heard that Vanilla is extremely punishing to mistakes like "tank got stunned and couldn't generate enough aggro, tank forgot to press cds, healer reacted 0.5 sec late", and you got 40 people, each can frick up.
What would happen in softcore? You ress a guy that died on trash and retry, no big deal. On hardcore you lose a fully equipped raider and you will have to postpone the raid.

          >permadeath doesn't change the actual difficulty of the game
this isn't true. making the time between trials longer forces players to go for different/smarter strats because they can't afford to fail and waste a shit ton of time to try again.
it's why souls games have boss runs, it's why "but you just restart the level anyway" wasn't a legitimate reason to nerf permadeath in fire emblem, and in wow it increases the difficulty because you can't just reset constantly until you get a lucky run

It absolutely does when if you die you start back in Elwynn forest.

I never got to see AQ40 because my guild was shit. My friend did let me come in and look around after his guild cleared it once, but that's it. All we could pull off was ZG and I think we attempted AQ20 once before TBC came out. Then all we could do was Karazan lol. There was a certain charm to being in a shit guild and slowly clearing more of the dungeon every week instead of joining one that just stomps everything. I haven't played since TBC though so no idea what WOTLK and beyond is like.

it already started with late vanilla and tbc but wrath and later has way more catchup gear to let shitter guilds attempt later raids.
it also has difficulty settings so the shitter guilds might just clear normal mode while the better players do heroic and mythic.

i was on a small server and raid progression guild meant you were one that was trying to do more than just the early raids and first boss of AQ40. it fell apart because more than half the guild just wanted to get gear for pvp and get carried by the other half and our guildmaster went full authoritarian and pushed even the raiders away to the point the guild split up.

Same. I couldn't find a suitable guild that wasn't too casual or too hardcore and quit WoW in WotLK. I have only seen like 5 bosses in Ulduar - this is all we could do in one rt. Even the easiest raid ever - wotlk Naxx - we cleared in 2 nights.
Started playing on Classic and cleared everything.

      >There was a certain charm to being in a shit guild and slowly clearing more of the dungeon every week instead of joining one that just stomps everything

As it should be tbh. I know the devs were butthurt about less than 1% of players in vanilla even entering naxx, but they over corrected this too hard. Raiding stopped feeling special and started to just feel like you were being given participation medals once they started adding in like 30 different difficulty levels just to make sure any 10 year old could beat an end boss in dungeon gear.

raids stopped feel like real places when they added difficulty levels. it used to be that just getting into a raid required effort and it felt like a dangerous place because it's not like you've already breezed through it on easy mode, most guilds just slowly progressed through the raid instead of blowing through it in a week on babby mode. the only real problem that made it too inaccessible was consume farming, otherwise all you have to do is git gud and be able to play consistently for 2 days a week. raiding is a lot more fun when you're actually exploring a hard to get to place that is impossible to actually get through without first spending weeks on progression. plus it gives you an actual goal to play towards, instead of playing just to see a number go up you play so you can see the rest of the cool dungeon.

          >most guilds just slowly progressed through the raid instead of blowing through it in a week on babby mode
This is exactly what happened in classic though, all the raids are baby mode
          >raiding is a lot more fun when you're actually exploring a hard to get to place that is impossible to actually get through without first spending weeks on progression.
You lava swim once to get the MC teleport
You do an easy dungeon quest for the BWL teleport
AQ you just walk in and Naxx you just bribe a vendor to teleport you
How are any of these hard to get to?
And none of them offer progression because the games a joke when not playing on literal dial up internet

            >This is exactly what happened in classic though, all the raids are baby mode
yeah because people have 20 years of practice, im talking about the switch to having easy modes in general, not classic

              Anonymous

No, it's because the bosses are brain dead simple to begin with you moron
You don't need 20 years to practice just pressing frostbolt and not standing in the fire for 10 seconds straight

were you even alive when vanilla was first released? most people couldn't even make it to naxx.

                Anonymous

And most people don't clear mythic raids, what's your point?
The difference is that once people got computers that could actually run a raid with 40 people at more than 1 frame per minute the content got shitstomped, because it was a joke.
LFR would be harder than anything in classic if people's computers steuggled like they did in 2004. The content, even at the lowest level, has just gotten harder over time.

Probably a month, month and a half and even two months
Top guilds keep losing geared players, even this AQ clear cost them a tank and at least one other geared raider. Frontier lost like 5 or 8 main raiders last week
Each two or three geared players you lose that's another week that KT gets to live

I can't believe people actually bother to raid in Classic, the only actual fun part of Vanilla was the leveling.

I'm starting to become convinced WoWgays are actually the most insufferable homosexuals on this site. There were a lot of competitors in the past few years, but as of the release of Hardcore, they have truly started convincing themselves that their dogshit retread of an old version of this low-IQ MMO is some kind of grand accomplishment in the sphere of gaming and some kind of high honor needs to be paid for installing 70 mods and reading guides to decade-old raids.

HC raiding is so goddamn dumb. If someone does frick up and die you have to replace and gear up someone new. I remember there being a lot of catch up gear you could use to carry people with low tier purples through later Raids but it's still a pain.

I can't imagine anyone putting up with this literal CBT.

The people doing HC raiding are the people who have been doing the same exact shit for almost 20 years playing classic over and over. They've leveled and geared characters hundreds of times. I agree it's fricking moronic, there must be something in the water in those euro shitholes.

I remember that, the troll was fricking determined.
As in, this dude spent like a full year in this guild raiding and convincing everyone to trust him to the point that they let him tank a boss that has an attack that could wipe the raid.
He waited for exactly the right moment to launch his betrayal. And it worked.

But holy shit the determination and will to do all of this shit for a full fricking year, just for this one chance to kill everyone's characters.

The most pathetic thing of all is how every HC death got appealed after the HC council ruled that the raid couldn't have possibly expected a tinyviolin, known troll that has been trolling in the game since like fricking nost, to try trolling anyone.
