Silent Hill 2 Remake Turmoil

The Silent Hill 2 Remake trailer did not impress the head of Bloober Team. "It doesn't reflect the spirit of the game"

Piotr Babieno - president of the Bloober Team studio - admitted in an interview that he understands the criticism that fell on the Silent Hill 2 Remake trailer presented during State of Play. In his opinion, the material prepared by the publisher "does not reflect the spirit of the game."

Let us remind you that the trailer with gameplay elements was criticized mainly for its unattractive visuals and the general feeling of stiffness and "wooden" . Judging by the statistics and comments on YouTube, the reception is rather mixed.

- I wrote these negative comments myself - jokes Babieno in an interview with the inwestyc.tv channel . - Quite seriously, we are not responsible for the marketing side. Our partner [Konami - note] is entirely responsible for this. ed]. [...] This trailer certainly does not reflect the spirit of the game .

I'm someone who typically likes faithful improvements to things, but even I don't want the Silent Hill trilogy touched. Not even the internal resolution or any assets. Horror games were best when we had hardware limitations. The low-budget feel, voice acting, and some of the story pacing, despite any of their flaws, I want all of them intact. I'm usually not one to claim video games are art but there's just something sacred to me about the original trilogy of Silent Hill where I feel like they are best left completely how they are, preserved in a time capsule for all time. If they got Steam ports how the MGS collection received, I wouldn't even be mad about it. It would be a good thing.

This. The combat is a much needed update to make the game not boring. The original's gameplay wasn't that great. People just remember the creepy moments and story. hours of wandering through fog is boring. original combat is boring once you figure out how to dodge enemies and just run. bosses were a joke because of all the ammo you hoarded.

yes, people don't remember how silly the old combat looked. new combat doesn't seem very polished, but it's way better than the original. I have no regrets pre-ordering the SH2 remake. even if doesn't turn out great there's always patch updates to make the game better.

I don't really think the SH2R trailer was really that bad, it looked fine to me. The only gripe I had about it was the audio for the guns didn't sound right at all, and that alone is very easy to fix. People just have a high bar of expectation because its their favorite game and thats also fine.

        >It's okay when Resident Evil 4 does it
Go frick yourself, this has been in gaming before your time. Literally most horror titles since 2008 have had shit like this and there hasn't been any sign of that shit stopping anytime soon, so you're just complaining for nothing.

look kid, "my time" started in 1985. Long before your sorry Bloopooper arse was even walking on this Earth.

          This shit is not SH.
And since it's not RE either, it's not justified.

          > Literally most horror titles since 2008 have had shit like this
Yes, and there's a reason why the genre... no, the whole fricking INDUSTRY went to shit right around that time.

Amnesia, Dead Space, TEW, all the nu-REs starting with 7 and the demakes... all pure, utter trash, that we, the OG fans of both OG franchises, absolutely loathed back in 2005-2012. And will keep loathing and hopefully gatekeeping the frick out the best we can.

This is not "nothing". This is a spreading CANCER that Wii-generation babbys like (You) have normalized. You've embraced sub-mediocrity as the golden standard, dragging everyone else down.

So let me make this awfully clear:
QTEs do not belong in the Silent Hill games.
Over-shoulder shooting shit does not belong in SH games.
That OVER ACTING and plasticy visuals are pathetic even by mid-00s' standards.
And literally no SH fan wanted this shitty demake.

If god allows it, RE too will crash and burn soon and at least return to its roots.

Trying to make a remake of what is widely considered to be one of the most significant artistic accomplishments of the medium is a thankless task to begin with and Bloober doesn't have anywhere near the pedigree of doing it. At that point it just becomes a matter trying not to break anything. I guess you can polish up the graphics somewhat (while being very mindful of keeping the art design intact) and making the controls and combat mechanics a bit more fluid (but, for gods sake, not trying to turn it into an action game) and keeping the rest exactly the same.

Which, for what it's worth, they've already screwed up by changing the voice acting. The original game struck gold with its nonprofessional actors and insecure deliveries that they've already failed to live up to once when they made the remaster. Outside of that, add anything and you run the risk of fricking it all up. Subtract anything and you run the risk of fricking it all up.

Something like the Final Fantasy Remake series can (debatably) justify being simultaneously a remake, reimagining, and commentary on the original because it's most of the same creative team revisiting their past work. A bunch of indie hacks who were probably for the most part still shitting their diapers when the original SH 2 came out aren't in a position to try to reinvent the wheel with it.

Correct, nothing needs to be done with any of the Silent Hill games. Team Silent's last game was 4 and anything after it is fan fiction. The series is dead and should stay dead indefinitely. They should make a new horror IP that's SH inspired at most. We don't need remakes or new entries to the Silent Hill series, it's pointless.

        Anonymous

I think it could become so bad it's good in that case and I'd likely enjoy playing it too. I enjoy DmC obviously for it's decent combat and great world design and aesthetics but I even derived enjoyment from it's awful interpretation of Dante and Vergil and the wacky adventure they went on to take down the man. The dialog was gold and kept me and Ganker entertained for many months. I'm just glad 5 came out eventually and erased that as the new face of the franchise.

I see nothing wrong with the combat. People actually like the original gameplay of swinging at nothing until enemy gets close enough? combat has always been a bit clunky and had finishers. I don't see why people think the QTE finishers are bad. In hard/extreme difficulty you had to stomp every enemy or else they get back up.

Trying to remake SH2 is pure hubris in of itself, there is absolutely no way to do it without pissing everybody off.
Would have been better to just rerelease the original for modern platforms without all the frick ups from the old HD remaster.

      This.
On one hand you got the pseudo intellectuals that say SH2 is some kind of deconstruction on gaming principles and it's above gaming with a story rivaling books.
On the other you got the people that enjoy it for the tension and survival aspect.
You can't remake this, it's like remaking MGS2 you're just asking to be lynched.

    >This trailer certainly does not reflect the spirit of the game .
the original game, or the remake that's currently in the works? if the former true, if the latter it sounds like meek damage control.

      It’s the latter

dayum. well, i'll wait for some yewtubers to post some footage before i decide to play it myself. the trailer was admittedly garbage because idgaf about the combat, it's the creepy atmosphere which is what SH2 is remembered for. i'm worried the "over the shoulder" perspective used is what could frick it up for me. fixed camera was just waaay scarier than this could ever be, hearing the noise of enemies yet having no clue where the motherfricker is hiding. jumpscares don't compare to enemies hiding just outside fixed camera angles.

    >A twenty year old game's bad combat excuses a a remake's bad combat.
    You people are actually psychotic.

Bloober didn't make the trailer. They were annoyed by the muffled audio mixing for example. Made the guns sound weird.

Of course they're shifting blame. No shit.

The audio is the least of their concerns. Everything shown looks like shit. If I made shit and my publisher cut up a trailer of shit but missed a corn kernel in it why would I get mad at the publisher?

They're also mildly annoted at Konami using early 2023 footage in a 2024 trailer, but that's another issue.

    >Switching over to what's internally known as Bloober Team 3.0, however, the studio will begin making horror games that are more action focused and require more from the player, perhaps closer to something like Resident Evil.

    >"We decided that our next titles should be much more mass-market oriented. We’d like to talk with more people. We’d like to deliver our ideas, with our DNA, not by environment or storytelling, but by action. So all of our future titles will have a lot of gameplay mechanics. They will be much bigger."

    >The first of these games will be the Silent Hill 2 remake

      >capcom decides to change resident evil into some evil cartoon movie with first person view gameplay
      >bloober team immediately rushes to fill the void in the market for creepy monster action games

" Well, I guess if I have to talk about bread, might as well get it over with."

    Baguette:
    >It's like walking through the foggy streets of Silent Hill. Long, ominous, and always leaves you questioning your choices. Not bad.

    Sourdough:
    > This one's a bit like encountering a twisted monster. The sourness hits you unexpectedly, but it grows on you. A strange comfort in the chaos.

    Whole Wheat:
    > Reminds me of the rusty, desolate Otherworld. A bit too heavy, and it feels like you're carrying the weight of your sins.

    Ciabatta:
    >This bread has layers, much like the layers of reality in Silent Hill. Soft inside, but the crust can be unforgiving. A paradox.

    Brioche:
    > Sweet, like the memories of a life before the nightmares. A fleeting taste of normalcy in a world gone wrong.

    Rye Bread:
    >Dark and mysterious, like the secrets lurking in the town. It's an acquired taste, much like embracing the darkness within.

    Multigrain:
    > It's as if the bread is trying to be everything at once. A reflection of the fractured realities in Silent Hill. Confusing, but oddly satisfying.

    Flatbread:
    > Simple and straightforward. It's like a moment of respite in the midst of all the horror. Sometimes, simplicity is a relief.

    Cinnamon Swirl:
    > Sweet and twisted, like the hallucinations that plague my mind. It's a guilty pleasure, a momentary escape from the nightmares.

    Pumpernickel:
    > Dense and intense. Much like facing the nightmares head-on. Not for the faint of heart, but it has its own dark allure.

Well, that's enough talk about bread. I've got bigger nightmares to deal with.

The problem with the combat (other than the QTE's) is the camera. Over the shoulder fundamentally changes the impression, even if it handles much the same (tank controls aside).
