Toyama made the Forbidden Siren series for the PS2 and PS3, and then Gravity Rush for the Vita and PS4.

This is what makes ito good. It's not scary but it's a legitimate "what the frick" moment.
I think this is the best page in the whole comic. It makes you ask so many questions. The logistics of it all are insane, that it becomes extremely difficult to decide on any other explanation besides literal magic. The bodies hanging from the windows is the best part, I think, even though the Christmas trees are the obvious centerpiece. Such arrangements done up in such a short period of time are certainty *possible* but require so many concessions it may as well have been a malevolent deity summoning it all into existence in an instant.
And some people still haven't realized that Junji Ito is a comedian.

One girl in the earlier stories literally has an arc where she has a mystical ability that lets her take photos using her camera that reveal Tomie's true nature, which compels Tomie to try and have her offed eventually. She is also notably the dole exception of a character not falling for Tomie's mindrape whatsoever - she's shown to be totally immune.
that's the case though. Any attempt to depict Tomie on picture or in painting will always reveal her true nature. There's an entire story about an artist who can't stop drawing her as she really is, if I recall correctly.

Tomie sucks, easily Ito's cheesiest series, it doesn't have an interesting premise like Black Paradox or Hellstar Remina, it doesn't have striking visuals like Uzumaki or the Cat Diary and it doesn't have unique concepts like the Amigara Fault or the human sofa, Tomie is just about a random ghost girl torturing morons with visions and shit.
Junji knows how to draw incredible attractive eyes.

Some of Junji Ito's stuff is scary but Tomie really isn't, it's about some b***hy psycho succubus who makes horny guys destroy their own lives. It feels like a porn manga that's missing the porn.

the best Tomie stories are the one with female protagonist. there was one where doctors find a dying Tomie body and transplant her kidney into another girl. it's a body horror story from there. the early Tomie stuff were better because that was before Ito was trying to "le auteur" where every story was a metaphor for society.

All I remember is that they tried to commit suicide
They end up creating a portal to the spirit realm where they got crystallized human souls. After a bunch of shenanigans with a mad doctor attempting to create more portals they discover that it's not just dead people's souls but the still living too and the end is them deciding to keep bringing over soul gems so humanity will wipe itself out.
Note that they do all of this solely to frick over the butthole doctor who ruined their lives and even now only seeks to profit off of the soul gems without realizing what they are.
That one was fun. It was less horror and more a scifi story
