I've been replaying Silent Hill 2-4 since last year. Why did they skip the 1st game? Bc the 2nd's more popular and will have more initial hype and generate more profit?

Yeah. That's a remaster of the 2002 remake. Unfortunately they didn't have the original files for the backgrounds so they're stuck in 480p but it still looks incredible considering it was originally on gamecube

Honestly, for a free game lasting around 90 minutes, I had a good time.

I think this is actually the first time I'm hearing of someone quitting Nintendo and staying in the industry, outside of someone like Sakurai, who has a blank check from the place whenever he wants it.
Well I didn't say anything about the game, I just said it was a good time.
It's probably the first SH game to be truly interesting since 4. Masahiro Ito draws a lot on the Alessa narrative of SH1 and 3, there's obvious homages like the scribbled on desk and everything (the school hallway is ripped straight out of Midwich as well), and overall the game was just good. The story can be hit or miss depending on how much you care, but it's a nice mystery, it's loaded with background narrative through the files, and my only real issue is that the protagonist talks too much. There were a few times where I was left to figure stuff out for myself, like when the game infers a character committed suicide through various journals and a newspaper, and you only catch it if you remember the dates from the first one (which would've been 3 files ago by the time you get the newspaper).
The game ultimately isn't too extreme. It doesn't pull a bloober team and go "Time to have a nice day", it goes for the fairly tried and true anti-suicide message of "people are like flowers", hence the fog being pushed away by the morning sun at the end.
The raw gameplay is also fine. It's just exploration, examining environments, and then a chase every now and then. The last one is really good, but I'm sure a lot of people will find it infuriating if they don't know how to complete it.
And despite what I said about the main character talking too much, there is some subtle symbolism and motifs going on. For one, they leave the time loop mechanic (that stands in in place of game overs) up for interpretation.
I didn't keep up with any leaks past the concept art stuff, primarily because I thought the game got shitcanned when Konami went on to reveal 3 completely unrelated games.
Hard as it may be to believe anon, but someone here actually wrote out comprehensive thoughts on something instead of saying "based" or "cringe".

If this is the new P.T. I found it weak but the graphics are very cool, the scenery is well done.
PT. it's more legendary than that, it's much scarier and the atmosphere is intense at all times but maybe P.T. It was only like that because there isn't much dialogue, the protagonist doesn't say anything, the story is fragmented so the focus of the horror is more on the atmosphere with some indications from the radio and other objects.
This Short Message is very expository, don't feel too scared or anything like that, the message behind it can be interesting, familiar to zoomers today.
Still waiting for a Silent Hill with vibes from Silent hill 4, P.T and silent hill 2, all together, the perfect silent hill, I believe Kojima could have done something like that.

But certainly for unsuspecting people or people who have never played P.T., this new game that launched today is not that good, even if it was a secret that would reveal itself to be Silent hill in the end fails in its atmospheric horror that P.T. always passed.
PT. It delivers a magnificent horror on a plate and even reveals itself to be a new silent hill at the end, but to do so I had to solve a demonic enigma that was difficult to overcome.

Pretty much the bread and butter of SH.
Alessa was bullied and basically killed herself by blowing up the boiler, Lisa has a ton of abuse and suicide overtones, Angela and James are very well known factors for the abuse and suicide stuff, Claudia was abused, Walter was abused AND killed himself, etc.
This is just a modern take on the same themes of SH1 regarding Alessa.
As for the suicide warning, I think they have to include it given how the game has the main character kill herself several times, in addition to being about another character's suicide.

Well, it's only trying to be modern for this one-off. That's the whole intent and idea behind it.
The other games are all still rooted in other ideas. SH2R is more obvious, 'f' is post-war Japan, and Townfall is... well, we don't know anything about it.
I think the main problem with the demo is that Anita talks too much and the fact that the gameplay isn't very engaging outside out of a few bits here and there. I really wished there was a gun you could use in the later half of the game. Plus, PT makes it harder to judge the demo on its own merits. You can even see the first post trying to hope that Kojima is still involved with the game a decade after its cancellation.

It's really not that bad but idk if you'll find it "acceptable as a silent hill game" because it has much more in common with PT and Shattered Memories which are both pretty unconventional silent hill games. But it's free and worth playing if you like either of those titles. Half the gays melting down about it haven't even played it because they're Brazilian favela dwellers who can't afford a ps5, and the other half are still gays. It's not great or spectacular but it's got good intense atmosphere and sound design/soundtrack which are two of the more important aspects of a silent hill game. If you have the means, play it for yourself. It's free. It's not like anybody here got ripped off

It showed the suicide hotline screen like 6 times during gameplay. Subtlety was most certainly lost on it. It inserts guilt into you because it's your fault, then it takes it away because your parents were bad people, and it's also justified because their parents sucked, too. It's a P.T. sequel more than a Silent Hill game. I don't know why people insist on craming famous franchises that have nothing in common with the new game you are making just because it might not be seen otherwise. Granted, I'd probably never touch this unless it had the SH name plastered on it, but that's it. It's not a Silent Hill game. It's just a horror game. You also take turns playing the game and watching the interactive movie. On a technical level, it's a very beautiful movie and the overall atmosphere is great. It would be best if it was either called something else or if they tried to make the Silent Hill game resemble a Silent Hill game. At least make a video game next time, not a walker.
So the plot is just that Maya being the grand daughter of a “witch” was able to talk to ghots (amia or whatever her name was and anita) both girls who killed themselves in the building. Anita bc of her mothers abuse when she was a child and being a shit artist and the other girl bc of family issues and not being able to go to med school. So Maya did those graffitis of them. But since Maya had nothing left she killed herself? Im confused bc im pretty sure they are all meant to be dead

Think you're supposed to interpret it more literally as A&A are friends that connect and grow in spite of their trauma, but Anita gets butthurt that Maya is "stealing" her friend and hides her final letter, indirectly causing her suicide. Maya's witch past and/or "Silent Hill Syndrome" (god that's dumb) trap her in milquetoast purgatory until she "finds it," aka being her reason to live in her best friend instead of killing herself like she intended.

Very cool story, and pretty creepy atmosphere. Clearly this has Ryukishi all over it. I liked it a lot. I wonder if Silent Hill f will be released in these smaller episodic pieces, or if this is just a P.T. situation to hype up the real game. Can't wait for more.

It's called getting old, but I don't think Ito was as involved as he claims he was. Owaku is the one who co-wrote SH1 with Toyama and was the sole writer of bothj SH2 and SH3. It was Ito's idea to create the Otherworld and the aesthetics of the series and it was his idea that the monsters be symbolism for personal trauma, but he didn't write or direct anything.

I was doomer on day one for the most part but I still held onto some hope. Some of the areas looked faithful at least. I think we were all spoiled by Resident Evil 1 remake's quality. That was lightning in a bottle evidently

Yeah. That's a remaster of the 2002 remake. Unfortunately they didn't have the original files for the backgrounds so they're stuck in 480p but it still looks incredible considering it was originally on gamecube

Well I didn't say anything about the game, I just said it was a good time.
It's probably the first SH game to be truly interesting since 4. Masahiro Ito draws a lot on the Alessa narrative of SH1 and 3, there's obvious homages like the scribbled on desk and everything (the school hallway is ripped straight out of Midwich as well), and overall the game was just good. The story can be hit or miss depending on how much you care, but it's a nice mystery, it's loaded with background narrative through the files, and my only real issue is that the protagonist talks too much. There were a few times where I was left to figure stuff out for myself, like when the game infers a character committed suicide through various journals and a newspaper, and you only catch it if you remember the dates from the first one (which would've been 3 files ago by the time you get the newspaper).
The game ultimately isn't too extreme. It doesn't pull a bloober team and go "Time to have a nice day", it goes for the fairly tried and true anti-suicide message of "people are like flowers", hence the fog being pushed away by the morning sun at the end.
The raw gameplay is also fine. It's just exploration, examining environments, and then a chase every now and then. The last one is really good, but I'm sure a lot of people will find it infuriating if they don't know how to complete it.
And despite what I said about the main character talking too much, there is some subtle symbolism and motifs going on. For one, they leave the time loop mechanic (that stands in in place of game overs) up for interpretation.

If this is the new P.T. I found it weak but the graphics are very cool, the scenery is well done.
PT. it's more legendary than that, it's much scarier and the atmosphere is intense at all times but maybe P.T. It was only like that because there isn't much dialogue, the protagonist doesn't say anything, the story is fragmented so the focus of the horror is more on the atmosphere with some indications from the radio and other objects.
This Short Message is very expository, don't feel too scared or anything like that, the message behind it can be interesting, familiar to zoomers today.
Still waiting for a Silent Hill with vibes from Silent hill 4, P.T and silent hill 2, all together, the perfect silent hill, I believe Kojima could have done something like that.

PT. It delivers a magnificent horror on a plate and even reveals itself to be a new silent hill at the end, but to do so I had to solve a demonic enigma that was difficult to overcome.

The Short Answer takes place in 'modern day', though likely 2022. One of the rare SH games that has dates everywhere.
Anyways, they aren't connected because they have different studios for the game part (Short Message used HEXADRIVE, f is using Neobards), and have different staff involvement (Masahiro Ito did Creature and Otherworld Design, someone else is doing that for f, Scenario was by Kiichi Kanoh while R07 is writing his own).

Pretty much the bread and butter of SH.
Alessa was bullied and basically killed herself by blowing up the boiler, Lisa has a ton of abuse and suicide overtones, Angela and James are very well known factors for the abuse and suicide stuff, Claudia was abused, Walter was abused AND killed himself, etc.
This is just a modern take on the same themes of SH1 regarding Alessa.
As for the suicide warning, I think they have to include it given how the game has the main character kill herself several times, in addition to being about another character's suicide.

Well, it's only trying to be modern for this one-off. That's the whole intent and idea behind it.
The other games are all still rooted in other ideas. SH2R is more obvious, 'f' is post-war Japan, and Townfall is... well, we don't know anything about it.
I think the main problem with the demo is that Anita talks too much and the fact that the gameplay isn't very engaging outside out of a few bits here and there. I really wished there was a gun you could use in the later half of the game. Plus, PT makes it harder to judge the demo on its own merits. You can even see the first post trying to hope that Kojima is still involved with the game a decade after its cancellation.

I know that suicide, bullying and social media are common places in low effort zoomer media, but I think it can be done with taste, in a subtle and mature manner. Is this the case? It's definitely not but I would recommend that you give the game a try yourself and form your own opinion. It's only about 2 hrs long. The fact that a couple people in this thread enjoyed it means that there's a chance you could too
It's really not that bad but idk if you'll find it "acceptable as a silent hill game" because it has much more in common with PT and Shattered Memories which are both pretty unconventional silent hill games. But it's free and worth playing if you like either of those titles. Half the gays melting down about it haven't even played it because they're Brazilian favela dwellers who can't afford a ps5, and the other half are still gays. It's not great or spectacular but it's got good intense atmosphere and sound design/soundtrack which are two of the more important aspects of a silent hill game. If you have the means, play it for yourself. It's free. It's not like anybody here got ripped off

It showed the suicide hotline screen like 6 times during gameplay. Subtlety was most certainly lost on it. It inserts guilt into you because it's your fault, then it takes it away because your parents were bad people, and it's also justified because their parents sucked, too. It's a P.T. sequel more than a Silent Hill game. I don't know why people insist on craming famous franchises that have nothing in common with the new game you are making just because it might not be seen otherwise. Granted, I'd probably never touch this unless it had the SH name plastered on it, but that's it. It's not a Silent Hill game. It's just a horror game. You also take turns playing the game and watching the interactive movie. On a technical level, it's a very beautiful movie and the overall atmosphere is great. It would be best if it was either called something else or if they tried to make the Silent Hill game resemble a Silent Hill game. At least make a video game next time, not a walker.

Think you're supposed to interpret it more literally as A&A are friends that connect and grow in spite of their trauma, but Anita gets butthurt that Maya is "stealing" her friend and hides her final letter, indirectly causing her suicide. Maya's witch past and/or "Silent Hill Syndrome" (god that's dumb) trap her in milquetoast purgatory until she "finds it," aka being her reason to live in her best friend instead of killing herself like she intended.

Very cool story, and pretty creepy atmosphere. Clearly this has Ryukishi all over it. I liked it a lot. I wonder if Silent Hill f will be released in these smaller episodic pieces, or if this is just a P.T. situation to hype up the real game. Can't wait for more.

It's called getting old, but I don't think Ito was as involved as he claims he was. Owaku is the one who co-wrote SH1 with Toyama and was the sole writer of bothj SH2 and SH3. It was Ito's idea to create the Otherworld and the aesthetics of the series and it was his idea that the monsters be symbolism for personal trauma, but he didn't write or direct anything.
