Since elves typically become adults when humans grow old and orcs are on their death beds, wouldn't this make elves the most unintelligent race in most standard fantasy settings?

No, just the one that takes the longer to mature. A human baby is completely useless for way longer then a deer baby, doesn't make aa human necessarily weaker then a deer.

A human is weaker than a deer. If I get hit by a car, the car keeps moving. If a deer gets hit by a car, they both die.

the vast majority of car accidents with a deer don't involve the driver dying Anon-kun, average weight of a deer is 150-200 lbs which is pretty comparable to a person. In the US alone you have 1.5 million car accidents involving a deer each year and only like 200 of those involve a human fatality.

if you assume elf minds work like human minds it means they are like teenagers for a really long time, basically they have the logical tools to understand the world but have moronic risk vs reward processing and are huge narcissists with severe emotional problems. living around elves should be like being a high school teacher, just annoying drama and constant childish antics. or you could have a scenario with them being physically underdeveloped but mentally on par with a human for their age which is 100% pedo bait

Most settings don't treat the lifespan difference as seriously as they should.

      1) a human is weaker than a deer
      2) a human child is already smarter than the smartest ape
      3) the issue isn't intelligence but maturity

It's also always a guaranteed waifugay pic in the OP, which goes hand in hand with having a low opinion of elves.

No, they don't. They reach physical maturity at the same rate as humans, but are considered adults at a later stage, since as a long-lived race they have a different understanding of adulthood.
Plenty of settings where they just mature like humans. Most of the settings that make them grow up for hundreds of ears are anime and manga, and they fail at world-building elves or just don't care about world-building at all.

Ah, the other waifugay image spam no games elf thread is about to auto-sage after being bumped for seven days, that explains this thread.
      See ya in a week.

I never worry about this garbage because I stopped playing DnDogshit and DnDogshit-clones ago. Settings where the players have to play humans are so much better. Short of that, scifi settings with more interesting races than "space elves" is acceptable.

      Maybe not seethe so hard?

According to whom? My games have elves reach adulthood by the time they're 20.

Many normies assume the latest cash grab, being successful, must be successful because many people agree with it. Allegedly, you don't buy things you don't agree fully with.

Elves usually mature at a "normal" rate, they just pile more experience and knowledge on top of that long after other races tap out.

There's nothing (that we know of) preventing humans from doing this, if you could arrest aging-related degradation of the body. Presumably there's some upper limit on brain capacity, but I have no idea how that would work.

I do wonder if humans who have done so have similar or radically different outlooks on things than elves do simply because their mind is not meant to live that long or because living that long requires some sacrifices.

Elves become adults at 18 same age as everyone else
Just elven society see them as youngsters
More like staying in their late teens for longer than literally children
It is like the difference of being able to drive in America vs. having your first beer

What has the cultural perception of what consists of adulthood to do with intelligence?

  8. 4 weeks ago

Elves physically and mentally mature at the same rate as humans. It's just that to be considered an adult in elven society, you have to spend 80+ years learning utterly useless pointlessly convoluted elven etiquette.

yes. Don't start your lvl 1 elf characters at 115 years old

The thing about being a century old is you can absolutely have only just recently learned how to swing a sword or cast spells after spending a human lifetime on other pursuits.

so elves should get massive bonuses to non-class skills to represent a lifetime of work in those fields with zero mental and physical degradation?

my point stands. You better give elves more starting resources in terms of skills, money, equipment, contacts, social advantage levels or anything else fitting if you want to start him off at 100+ years old

Nope, your shitty elf waifu spent the last hundred years just constantly jerking off to the furry porn and therefore starts at level 1 just like everyone else.

I started out my elf as a 78 years old priest for a non elf deity.
He makes comments about how most of his time was actually spent scribing or doing menial jobs, so he only took up spellcasting when he was told by his god to start adventuring.
He has also referenced that in his hometown he'd have been deemed too young to become a priest.
That's how I justify him having started at level 1.

In the right system, you give them extra dots in resources, but with limitations. They can use some of the interest off their elf family's ever-growing, well-invested fortune when they're visiting the elf homelands or helping the family business, but they don't get to keep any of it until they retire adventuring and settle down to be tree-farmers, help run the magic academy, or get serious about attuning to the land, just like their great-great-great-great-great grandparents. (Until they get over their adventuring phase, they don't get the traditional benefits of being an elf).

This, it's perfectly reasonable to be level 1 at 115, you're entire mindset and priorities are going to be different when you life span is measured in centuries. Elves most likely think everyone else moves too fast or is very impatient. A human college getting you out in four years would be seen as rushing through higher education.

Well, let's be honest. Most fantasy settings just want to make Elves the long-lived/immortal race. They don't bother exploring what being a long-lived race would be like outside of some gimmick here or there. Like the DND Elves, when they can sleep/trance half the time as humans and live for 800+ years, their 100-year elf is often only as smart as a 20-year human.
To be fair, I was lazy in my setting. I just had Elves grow very slowly during their childhood compared to other races, like how a baby spends the first few months still developing its body and is just sleeping most of the time outside of crying, eating, and shitting themselves. I just made the first few decades of an elf's life the same as a baby/toddler, so where a human would be born and an adult with kids by the time the elf develops enough to start walking and talking. Plus, when they have kids, most elves often head to their family/clan homes to raise the child. Or if they don't have a family, they go to the hidden nursery villages where they have their kid and raise them with others like them. Still, Elvish children are kept hidden and secured from most of the world because elves take the longest for their children to grow, especially at the beginning. Then, when they become old enough, they become someone's apprentice or are sent to a school or academy. Then, when they reach adulthood, they are often skilled tradesmen or graduates of an elvish academy, which makes it easy to find work and to be accepted into different universities.

Read kalashtar lore, it's even funnier
    >lore says they mature both physically and mentally as fast as humans (15 they're adults)
    >starting age for adventurers is 85

Meaning you have literally mental and physical adults for 70 years on your house till they decide to have their on life
