The bulk of mods download in seconds because they are tiny. And as for the moderation, the site was huge before the SJWs took over. It just maintained its place on the top because most people don't care about the mods being censored or just don't know about it.

I did, but it doesn't change the fact that it has the best presentation and a easy-to-use launcher with everything prepackaged. Frankly I didn't even know the FPSBanana of yore still existed in any form.
moddb is like the only real competitor to nexus, but even then its UI is shit and is like a decade out of date, google is a better search for it.
That said, there are alternatives to nexus. Thunderstore and i think mod.io are both solid ones but they usually rely on the communities around said games to agree to use those sites and they're a little pozzed too

They pay modders. All unique downloads a mod receives determines a monthly share of the total ad revenue. No other mod site does this, or ever will. There are a lot of terrible skyrim mods that have many super high resolution textures for shit you're never going to notice. I'd imagine all the ai voice acting trash is also massive.
I do have fond memories of Nexusmods but I've moved on to other places. Shit is getting too weird over there, better to bail now before they get 'really' weird.
