Not my favorite by far, but I wish that stabbing tower would have been a huge ego check and chapter 3 would see her reincarnate as fragile and skitish since she knows she couldn't defeat you at her most powerful (or TLQ just percives her that way). Instead of being chained to the wall, she's now inside of a big prison cell (the bars are to keep you out).

I've yet to find a numbing agent or anesthetic that works on me, so starting from my mid-teenage years I just tell doctors to skip it and go for it. assuming you've played more than one game with cards, you can trade game a cards for game b cards...
or you can just ask for them from someone who doesn't even want them. plenty of people don't give a shit about cards because you can't get entire badges without trading around, myself included
What are some theories you had while playing the game that were proven wrong?
For me, the first time I got a new voice (Smitten in Damsel), I figured it was a time loop that adds new voices for each death, so the presence of Hero at the start means "Chapter 1" was actually the second loop. I thought there was going to be some big reveal around why I'm remembering the new loops but not Hero's, and SM making me forget loops only reinforced the idea. I only gave up on it after beating the game. The canonical answer is that upon Narrator making you a mortal, you perceived SM as a "princess" (and almost certainly yourself a "hero" to rescue her) against Narrator's intentions. That is your default state.

You've probably heard people talk about how "society is collapsing!" and stuff like that, right? Well, they're not wrong.
There are three reasons why less and less men are being in relationships: the disappearance of religion from culture, women being encouraged to pursue careers and the internet granting instant gratification.
The cornerstone of a functioning society are traditional relationships. The man provides for the household, while the woman takes care of the household.
If both the man and the women start providing, there is no longer anyone to take care of the household. If both the man and the woman start taking care of the household, there isn't anything to care of.
With religion no longer enforcing this model, and women being encouraged to pursue a career instead of taking care of a household, there is now a decline of women wanting to take care of a household.
Women busy with holding a job no longer need to be provided for. They also no longer have the time for dating and their standards have now been raised.
While this isn't ideal, this would only affected a small percentage of the population. Unfortunately, this is where the introduction of the internet comes into play:
People have needs. They need to socialize, they need to exert emotions, they need to relieve themselves; they need lots of things. People are willing to pay to have their needs fulfilled.
Once corporation realized that they could better fulfill these needs through the internet, they ushered everyone and their mom onto the money-making platform.
The internet is preferable to real life, because it satisfies a person's need in the most safest way possible. So why bother risking getting hurt in real life?
The result of all this?
An ever-increasing subset of men no longer having access to relationships, with most men desperate for one, due to a higher demand than supply of women.

Not necessarily. In theory we "forget" everything about the previous route, previous princess, and SM herself until the mirror. Just like the princess, the perspective we have is contained entirely within that route. SM prevents the ignorant you from retreading the same path, but so far as lore is concerned, you live those alternate choices as if your own.
...It works a bit better if we separate you (the Decision Maker) from the Hero (mortal LQ). However, nothing in the game supports us being separate. We are the protagonist.
In that case you should at least be able to mention that something was controlling you and prevented you from resisting. The whole trust narrative doesn't work if it's not an actual betrayal.

Likewise with Tower, when you try to resist her you keep getting many resist options greyed out, even though that has nothing to do with SM's interference. It's implying something outside is preventing you from thinking it.

Have you gone through the Tower? Because this is used intentionally there. There are useless options that you can NEVER pick no mater what you do. It's just used as a tool to imply how helpless you are to commit otherwise. In a way, this same idea applies from repeating options. She doesn't want the same options. You can TRY picking it, but Mound won't let you, if it leads to a Chapter you've already done. She wants new perspectives, and you don't really get a choice if you've already met her.

I think a better way to explain it is to look at your options as the thoughts you COULD have. What you select is what you really thought. The greyed out options are like an invisible wall blocking you from thinking that, whether it is SM or Tower that is blocking it. Narrator's takeover is him trying to force your thoughts. Adversary's "She cannot be killed" thought spam is you trying to stop from thinking it, but you can't get around it.
So as far as the Witch route is concerned, you really thought that betrayal. You chose it. Even if from a god's perspective, you had no choice but to think it.

The dialogue options you can take to get to her heart at the end are split into either saying you're going to kill her, or that you're going to find another option compared to that, or to leaving with her and existence going back to exactly the same as it was before (Narrator universe dies, another is born, etc).
One of those "compromise" options you can take, if you take the blade, is just resetting the whole game, straightforward. The other one is leaving the cabin with the human form of the first princess you saw, the baseline princess. Now considering that they distinguish themselves from the Shifting Mound (variously, depending on which of the 3 you got) by saying how they feel more grounded and such, I take that as the final princess just being a normal human, or the mortal incarnation of the Goddess, same thing. And you also leave your voices behind if you choose to leave with her, so I see it as you also becoming a normal mortal birdman. When you take her up the stairs with you, you can see through the windows that the Shifting Mound is gone, so we know at least that they don't get reabsorsed as soon as they step out. Hero also says he will find the other voices so presumably there would also be a Long Quiet God version somewhere, maybe even joining up with the Shifting Mound eventually. This is all shit I think most people can agree to be canon to that ending.
Now, to one of the final princess variants (I think it's the stoic one but I'm not sure), you can say that you always wanted to leave with her, but didn't like what her being a God meant for the world. I think that implies pretty clearly that you don't just separate yourselves from the divine forms and let those divine forms blandda up and everything goes back to normal, with the only difference from the Gods ending being that their mortal avatars are walking the Earth. >post too long, cont.
I think that statement implies that there would be some other difference than that. Now, I don't think they would simply step outside the cabin into the forest and remain there trapped in the construct messing around forever, that goes against "wanting to leave". But I also don't think they would simply break out of the construct (or have their divine forms break it) and then step out into the dogshit dying world, live 1 mortal life together, die, and then everything is as the Gods ending.
What I think happens, and makes the most sense to happen, regarding the protag's comment about her being a God and what it does to the world, is that they break out, experience the shitty dying world as stated (time moves normally, as the divine aspects have separated in the cabin and are doing their thing together), and then upon death, or even before that, the Princess and Birdman return to divine form and assume control, and use the knowledge they gained of the suffering of mortals to make sure the next universe they create has just a little bit less suffering. There's no saving Narrator's world anyway.
And then they can repeat this as many times as they want, incarnating themselves into mortals, doing the whole wandering Gods trope, making life just a little bit better each time they do, knowing mortals more and more. I think that's the happy ending Birdman wanted, for me at least.
On another note, I really fricking liked this game and it got me into checking out other CYOAs. I already played 1 run of Sir Brante, it's alright but it doesn't consider my choices as well, and I think I will play Suzerain next.

I'm unsure about apotheosis' place as a "good" ending. After-all to leave with her without ascending requires extra effort, thats easily missed if you take the path of least resistance. It's strange, is all. To have that be almost "an endings end." In a way; just another branch of the story you've already supposedly "completed".
I don't disagree but strictly speaking leaving is presented as ambiguous. It is intentionally left up to interpretation, albeit while giving off a hopeful tone.

Framing is important, Narrator is ironically trying to play God by imposing his will on the natural order. He is attacking the status quo, which in a traditional narrative structure is indicative of a villain.
Throws me off because Ascend is the easiest ending to get and the game itself calls it a surrender to agree with the Mound but it is the best ending compared to all the others, except maybe the leaving with the first princess one.
Every dialogue option associated with it is essentially >I don't know what will happen, and I don't care.

All the routes are super short so they leave the player wanting more. This "leave the player wanting more" approach will often lead to very active communities, with the cost being that these communities tend to become utterly obsessive and unhinged within a very short period of time..

What are some theories you had while playing the game that were proven wrong?
For me, the first time I got a new voice (Smitten in Damsel), I figured it was a time loop that adds new voices for each death, so the presence of Hero at the start means "Chapter 1" was actually the second loop. I thought there was going to be some big reveal around why I'm remembering the new loops but not Hero's, and SM making me forget loops only reinforced the idea. I only gave up on it after beating the game. The canonical answer is that upon Narrator making you a mortal, you perceived SM as a "princess" (and almost certainly yourself a "hero" to rescue her) against Narrator's intentions. That is your default state.
I thought that the whole thing took place inside of a storybook and that this was a fairytale that he wanted to end very badly.

Not necessarily. In theory we "forget" everything about the previous route, previous princess, and SM herself until the mirror. Just like the princess, the perspective we have is contained entirely within that route. SM prevents the ignorant you from retreading the same path, but so far as lore is concerned, you live those alternate choices as if your own.

That's the invisible wall you bring up to SM. You do see them, or you feel something preventing you from thinking them, however you want to interpret it. Likewise with Tower, when you try to resist her you keep getting many resist options greyed out, even though that has nothing to do with SM's interference. It's implying something outside is preventing you from thinking it.
Greying them out is a gameplay convenience to show that the route is intentionally being locked away.

Have you gone through the Tower? Because this is used intentionally there. There are useless options that you can NEVER pick no mater what you do. It's just used as a tool to imply how helpless you are to commit otherwise. In a way, this same idea applies from repeating options. She doesn't want the same options. You can TRY picking it, but Mound won't let you, if it leads to a Chapter you've already done. She wants new perspectives, and you don't really get a choice if you've already met her.

Because your memories are sealed at the time. You don't realize that was an option (an option that you previously chose at that) until your memories are back.
I think a better way to explain it is to look at your options as the thoughts you COULD have. What you select is what you really thought. The greyed out options are like an invisible wall blocking you from thinking that, whether it is SM or Tower that is blocking it. Narrator's takeover is him trying to force your thoughts. Adversary's "She cannot be killed" thought spam is you trying to stop from thinking it, but you can't get around it.
So as far as the Witch route is concerned, you really thought that betrayal. You chose it. Even if from a god's perspective, you had no choice but to think it.

Blogposting my interpretation of the ending where you leave with the first princesses
The dialogue options you can take to get to her heart at the end are split into either saying you're going to kill her, or that you're going to find another option compared to that, or to leaving with her and existence going back to exactly the same as it was before (Narrator universe dies, another is born, etc).
One of those "compromise" options you can take, if you take the blade, is just resetting the whole game, straightforward. The other one is leaving the cabin with the human form of the first princess you saw, the baseline princess. Now considering that they distinguish themselves from the Shifting Mound (variously, depending on which of the 3 you got) by saying how they feel more grounded and such, I take that as the final princess just being a normal human, or the mortal incarnation of the Goddess, same thing. And you also leave your voices behind if you choose to leave with her, so I see it as you also becoming a normal mortal birdman. When you take her up the stairs with you, you can see through the windows that the Shifting Mound is gone, so we know at least that they don't get reabsorsed as soon as they step out. Hero also says he will find the other voices so presumably there would also be a Long Quiet God version somewhere, maybe even joining up with the Shifting Mound eventually. This is all shit I think most people can agree to be canon to that ending.
Now, to one of the final princess variants (I think it's the stoic one but I'm not sure), you can say that you always wanted to leave with her, but didn't like what her being a God meant for the world. I think that implies pretty clearly that you don't just separate yourselves from the divine forms and let those divine forms blandda up and everything goes back to normal, with the only difference from the Gods ending being that their mortal avatars are walking the Earth.

I think that statement implies that there would be some other difference than that. Now, I don't think they would simply step outside the cabin into the forest and remain there trapped in the construct messing around forever, that goes against "wanting to leave". But I also don't think they would simply break out of the construct (or have their divine forms break it) and then step out into the dogshit dying world, live 1 mortal life together, die, and then everything is as the Gods ending.
What I think happens, and makes the most sense to happen, regarding the protag's comment about her being a God and what it does to the world, is that they break out, experience the shitty dying world as stated (time moves normally, as the divine aspects have separated in the cabin and are doing their thing together), and then upon death, or even before that, the Princess and Birdman return to divine form and assume control, and use the knowledge they gained of the suffering of mortals to make sure the next universe they create has just a little bit less suffering. There's no saving Narrator's world anyway.
And then they can repeat this as many times as they want, incarnating themselves into mortals, doing the whole wandering Gods trope, making life just a little bit better each time they do, knowing mortals more and more. I think that's the happy ending Birdman wanted, for me at least.
On another note, I really fricking liked this game and it got me into checking out other CYOAs. I already played 1 run of Sir Brante, it's alright but it doesn't consider my choices as well, and I think I will play Suzerain next.

Obviously barring word of god we'll never know what happened after the two of them opened that cabin door for the final time, but that's a pleasant, optimistic take.

It's good in that we know the outcome specifically and that it's a positive outcome. No ambiguity, just love and life.

Framing is important, Narrator is ironically trying to play God by imposing his will on the natural order. He is attacking the status quo, which in a traditional narrative structure is indicative of a villain.
Throws me off because Ascend is the easiest ending to get and the game itself calls it a surrender to agree with the Mound but it is the best ending compared to all the others, except maybe the leaving with the first princess one.
Oblivion is arguably easier since it involves literally not engaging with the story.
