there will at bare minimum be pre-designated 'safe' landing areas that are flat / large enough to accommodate your ship, but more likely each planet will be broken up into different zones you can pick from orbit to touch down on and explore nearby points of interest
You tards wield cynicism as a self-defense mechanism because you're too stupid to understand what's plausible. Bethesda (along with many other developers) simulates worlds as a grid of cells, they just load in the cells around you. To make a planet, all you have to do is wrap them, i.e. when the player approaches a far edge load in the cells from the opposite edge. Boom, now you can walk "around" the planet endlessly. It's so simple I'm pretty sure even I could program it.

Anon, it's confirmed that you'll be able to "explore an area around your ship" and each planet has between 0 and 3 completely isolated POI that you can select to "initiate landing", which is just a loading screen equivalent to activating a door to another cell in any TES game.
There is no planet to explore, just a handful of independent, invisible-walled dioramas with the same skybox.
