It wasn't that it was a PC release for me, but rather had bad it looked and ran on Switch itself, hampered further by a patch that lowered the resolution further to try and maintain 20fps. Game looks drastically better in Yuzu.

SH2 releasing before a SH1 port (even if it was shitty emulation) is boggling.

We know SMT5 has a Steam compile in the data mine, it's just a matter of Atlus getting off their ass, porting 4/4A and then releasing 5 at this point.

Why did they even call it "Soul Hackers 2" anyway? Such a forced "celebration" of a game that is already part of a larger series and isn't particularly well known anyway. They should have just made a new Devil Summoner.

          Anonymous

Afaik it was a new team altogether making V, also the person who directed was his first as well. So yeah they made a lot of rookie mistakes. SMTV kinda tried to incorporate mechanics from SJ, Nocturne and IV altogether, but they fricked up badly on the most basic stuff that made SMT different, like having level scaling mandatory instead of stats, and redoing the story many times that it just ended up being a mess just like the alignment system. At some point I even thought the game wanted to do a SMT Nine alignment system since the Bethel reunion pretty much fitted well for doing that, considering also that the game incorporated the "Light-Neutral-Dark" as well on the common Law-Neutral-Chaos alignment system, which was a thing on NINE, and SJ was a small detail for doing demon scout, Dark alignment demons weren't possible to scout at all except they asked you, surrendered or you fused them.

Weird game. It gave me a lot of things that I really wanted from 3.
    >Pixie companion who talks to you.
    >Brought back player-unique skills.
    >Direct sequel to SMT3 with references and showcasing what happened to the world after god is killed.
    >More laser sword abilities (I specifically begged for this for a while and I was happy I got cool laser abilities)
But then I wound up hating it.
    >Stuck on switch
    >Doubling down on shitty changes to combat, stats, abilities introduced in SMT4
    >Magatsuhi-skill centric bosses.
    >literally had to include multiple party wide element blocking items to fix boss encounters.
    >Attack animations, especially Nihongobongo's basic attack, feel flimsy and have no impact.
    >Barely any dungson, the ones that are there suck.
    >Deserts are the most boring landscape to look at, and that's all you have to explore for the entire game.
    >Stat bloat out the ass
    >Level-centric damage scaling making stat bloat pointless.
    >Buffs raped to death, only luster candy and debilitate are worth the turn investment.
    >Charge is now strictly only an SP conserving ability.
    >Physical skills still cost SP and physical demons have low SP as if they still meant to go back to HP-cost physical skills but didn't go through with it.
Don't even get me started on how ugly and blurry it is with horrendous framerate issues.

Yeah I agree with most of what you said. I actually liked the overworlds more than basic dungeons, but the fact that it's almost all deserts is extremely disappointing. Having dungeons with unique themes would have helped make the game feel much more fresh.

Stat bloat and physical skills costing SP was a change in 4 that sucked. Proficiencies are an ok change, it helped diversify demons a bit.

SMT IV:A is the culprit there, vanilla IV had everything fine in terms of skill unlocks and MP cost, IV:A just went fricking ridiculous on the MP demand, besides the skill affinity that I FRICKING HATE FOR FRICKS SAKE IT SUCKS

Worse part is that V barely gives you Chakra items, skills are even more expensive, rely too much on skill affinity, besides ALSO LEVEL, and buffs are just useless, they are single target in the beginning, then you need the PARTY buffs, they cost you half your demon's MP, stack twice and then fade after 3 turns, making other skills like Dekaja/kunda completely worthless, when the idea of keeping one of those was to obliterate the enemy's resources and turns it spent buffing up and trying to debuff you as well. ABSOLUTELY moronic

I don't see how a serious fan of the series could like it. I could write an essay on it.
    >nostalgiabaits Nocturne but doesn't understand what made it work
In SMT3, there's more buildup to the apocalypse and when it finally happens, you wake up in a relatable area so you don't know the true extent until you finish the first dungeon and get out and see it's the whole world that was destroyed. SMTV you walk in a tunnel and boom you're now in the desert. That desert is also the only shit you see for 99% of the game while nocturne takes you through the ruins of all sorts of places like caves, subway tunnels, malls, high rise towers... There's more to be said here but tl;dr
    >story
Story is always weak in mainline, inb4 complaining, it is weak. Nocturne shows you how the world is forming their reason. SMTV, you wake up and first guy you run into already has everything handled.
    >gameplay
2 hours in I get crit by an enemy for almost an instant death. I level up once, the same enemy crits me and does 1/8th of the previous damage. That's all I have to say. Level weight matters here more than any game in the series.
    >music
    Gave me a headache honestly.
    >performance
    Awful on real hardware

Honestly didn't finish it but that's because I didn't fricking like it. If they keep making shit games like V then Persona deserves to take the series over since it actually tries.

Most "serious fans" of SMT came in with SMT4 on the 3ds and hated persona because of a mix of console favoritism homosexualry and a shallow attempt at looking mature by arguing immaturely about how mature SMT is.

I finished the true neutral route+shiva. It's not a terrible game but it is pretty bad. Not as bad as SMT4 thankfully but I'm still waiting for them to outdo Nocturne, which SHOULD be easy to do but so far they haven't fricking bothered.

      >In SMT3, there's more buildup to the apocalypse
in V, the apocalypse already happened a long time ago. it's all a sham and the world's been limping by with relative order since. that's not something that can be built up. your premise is mistaken because it's trying to be the opposite of nocturne, not a copy.

        Anonymous

I think the way they handled it was fine but it probably would have had a bigger impact on the player if they treated it like a surprise twist. It's something you find out immediately instead. That or show how the npcs in the city are slowly losing their minds because the city is disappearing along with them.

If there were a V Maniax the false Tokyo would be where the game needs fleshing out. Like sidequests and/or more dungeons akin to the school where demons are breaking through.

I just think its kind of a shame that tokyo actually has a shit ton of dialog and development of the NPCs there losing their minds. There is a ton of nice foreshadowing there but the fact they are all top down and easy to miss makes the whole situation far less impactful.

What didn't you like about reasons? They were shaped naturally by the experiences characters had in the real world and vortex worlds.
The weak girl came to value strength seeing that power rules all.
The guy who was desperate to be popular and accepted, even wearing trendy fashion shit and acting like a socialite, just wanted isolation after he lost faith in others and increased value in himself by escaping from prison twice with no one to save him.
The guy who wanted a world of stillness was keen on law vs chaos and the endless war it brings.
The woman who once agreed to end the world decided things were better off as they were and sacrifices everything to return it to normal.

      >I like how there are people who b***h that V didn't use reasons the same way Nocturne did
I don't mind. I just wish SMT5 did what it wanted to do better instead of absolute shit.
Also, thematically SMT5 and Nocturne are yin/yang, which is probably why the chaos-like delinquent went full Law, like Nocturne was a law based game being subverted by Lucifer's chaotic influence in the true demon ending.

        Anonymous

V is clearly meant to be an inverted Nocturne and that's thematically appropriate based on what Nocturne was about. Even down to the fact that V is mostly outdoors and Nocturne is mostly indoors.

I swear, outside of Dazai and the archangel, everything felt anaemic
I liked the combat aside from the magatsuhi shit and the dumbass "boss is charging an attack" that you can completely counter with dampeners which are cheap as shit
the magasuhi gauge is interesting, but 95% of the time, you will just use the crit one because it will ALWAYS be available and is better than the rest in most situations
exploration was okay, I wish the demons had more thought put into their patrols/grouping as it felt very artificial in a world that is trying to be more rough and alive
overall, pretty good game, glad I played it, badly could use an updated port where they actually remember to flesh out the story and characters

Honestly, the story. That was my main issue I had throughout the entire game. The characters and world building are some of the worst I've seen in the series. It genuinely felt unfinished in spots, as if the devs forgot their own plot points or to put in important story beats.

A great example is the dumbass law rep. His build up is initially fine, but then you have the angel b***h outright try to kill you. So what does your "friend" do literally minutes after she tried to impale you? He begs you to come with him to save her and cheer her up. He doesn't even try to justify it or anything; he acts like you'd just naturally want to go support her. This isn't even mentioning how he quite literally turns evil at a drop of a hat. Like, actually takes his hat off, throws it off to the side, and now he's got a totally different personality where he's willing to kill you now.

I really enjoyed aspects of the game, but the story was, surprisingly, so poorly told that it interfered with my enjoyment of the moment to moment gameplay. On top of that, you had atrocious performance with the fps dropping sub 15, some of the most dull dungeon designs I've seen in the series (the last dungeon is quite literally just hallways, that's it), and pretty much zero replayability or NG+ content outside of different endings.

Funnily enough, just like Nocturne that SMTV was clearly trying to emulate, it really could use some kind of Maniax version that adds in necessary story beats, puts in some much needed content, and gets it off the Switch to a system that can manage above 20 fps.
