I’ve recently got into Super Mario World rom hacks and I’ve found huge selection. I’ve been going through them one by one but hardly any of them are true, faithful sequels. Most chance the sprites and backgrounds and turn it into a novelty game.
Any recommendations for faithful, non-kaizo SMW rom hacks?
The best one I’ve found is Return to Dinosaur Land.

Very few have the same feeling as Super Mario World. Notably they are always extremely stingy with the cape item or even modify it to be less useful.
Return to Dinosaur world feels too bland imo.
An Super Mario World Central Production has more of the Mario World feel than most.
There is also the very old Super Demo World.
>item that breaks the game completely and every mario fan hates
>modders who know better, so they remove said op item for better balance
gee i wonder
>every mario fan hates the cape
It's fun to use and opens up levels. If you want to cheese through levels that's a statement on you as a player, not the item
it's fun in vanilla, but it really is OP. it's not just flying over levels, you can also fall in slow motion, which nerfs platforming, and you get an attack on top of that.
If you don't want to play with nerf, don't pick up a nerf gun.
>Avoiding items that make things too easy undermines the challenge
>Self imposed challenge undermines the challenge of playing
Just because an item makes the game easier doesn't mean you're obligated to use it, and self imposed challenge will inherently improve the challenge of a game, not detract from it.
Case in point picrel
Yea, but then you can get the same reward for much less challenge. There shouldn't be nerfs, unless it's an easy mode designed to let you clear the game with less challenge. You shouldn't have to self-impose challenges on a regular basis, only if you're going for 100% and/or speedrun. If there's an intended challenge, you're supposed to be strictly limited to that challenge, you shouldn't be allowed to cheese your way through. It devalues the accomplishment of winning when you can get the same thing by bullshitting with an OP item, or exploiting an easy glitch. Items like the cape also give you a crutch on difficult parts instead of pushing you to git gud. These are all reasons why the cape should be used sparingly in hacks.
Here's the thing: Super Mario World isn't always about challenge. Sometimes it's about feeling like you're overpowered because you have the cape. Of just flying up into the sky because it's fun and there might be something neat up there.
I have played only scarce hacks that tried to capture this feeling.
that's a valid point. romhacks lean towards being difficult, even the ones that aren't all-out kaizo. what you described is one of the strong points of the original vanilla game. it's true, hacks usually don't capture it, because it's really tricky to keep the difficulty high while also having comfy exploration/experimentation at the same time.
God I despise this argument.
>just don't use it bro
It's IN the game. Avoiding it because it makes things too easy undermines the whole challenge of playing. It makes it feel like an exercise in futility.
Indeed.
But that was part of the spirit of the original SMW that is missing in hacks.
I treat the cape as an special reward power-up, due to how broken it is, placing it in hard to reach locations, this way the player could see the value of the broken power-up and be more careful in the levels to not lose it instantly
more like:
>modders can't make good levels, blame on a power up
>remove depth of the game instead of tweaking it with ASM
>proceed to whine about 2D Mario games being "too simplistic" then go back to playing Celeste
but that other person did say they modify it with ASM...
>Super Demo World
Frick the Pipe World.
super mario odyssey. not joking, it came out in 2004
Play the old trusty one: brutal mario
It's peak 2000's hack soul
This.
Super Kitiku Mario was never finished but its a kino ROM hack. Play the modified version with the new overworld graphics and music replacements, but v8 levels.
ROM hacks these days are fricking terrible because they are all blended together and don't try to stay true to the original SMW style. Kaizo hacks are all fricking same shit of trial and error and non-kaizo all try too hard.
cape b. kool
My favorite "traditional" hack is probably Super Mario Omega. It's the only one I played that had a good difficulty level for the most part and didn't fall into having lazy level design like a lot of traditional hacks do. The special world is also super comfy kino
Cookie Crisis
Are there any where mario has a hitler moustache and the goombas are israelites?

This guy does decent work imo, I'd say they are a bit tougher than vanilla rom hacks but they aren't overally difficult. He's Brazillian so the story isn't translated well but let's be honest story doesn't matter in these just good level design.
His hacks are well made but I find his level design really bland. I played The Princess Rescue and all the levels blended together in my mind, I don't remember almost any of them.
