you literally have two options, Godot for 2D and UE for 3D. everything else is a waste of time unless you have a technical division under your employment that can create you an engine in reasonable amount of time.

Lumen is expensive and prone to horrible noise especially in indoor scenes, imo needs a lot more work.

Nah, all unreal engine games play the and feel very similar. It's a shit engine, but it's easy for low IQ people to use. Just load up some assets and drag and drop shit with its visual scripts and your done. Most of the games made with Unreal are shovelware. Real Chads program things from scratch.

Licensing Unreal is millions of dollars cheaper for a better-documented, more flexible product with lots of third-party add-ons, a wider set of people knowledgeable in using it, and a guarantee of ongoing development support forever. Developers creating and maintaining their own engines from scratch for every game is an ancient, expensive, time consuming archaic process that has no place in today's development world. It's a colossal and tragic waste of manpower, talent and money producing trash like Forspoken that looks last gen despite being pc and PS5 exclusive.

the vast majority of AAA studios use proprietary engines, and will continue to do so in the future.

All western studios are moving to shitreal shitgine anon its basically sony 1st party studios and fricking bethesda nowadays lol. Japs are on the other hand making own tech like capcom with Re engine and Bandai Namco who are working on own next gen engine for years now so all their studios will use it - they all use shitreal shitgine now.

no they aren't lmao, AAA publishers will continue using proprietary engines for their big releases to avoid paying the licensing fees.

Bungies next project on Unreal, cdpr moving to Unreal, arkane moved to Unreal, ea studios are slowly dropping Frostbite and moving to Unreal, flying wild hog dropped own tech and moved to Unreal and more examples. I forgot about Ubisoft so yeah its literally fricking Ubisoft, Bethesda/id and sonys first party studios using own tech.

I wouldn't hold your breath about EA shifting entirely to Unreal. Dreadwolf is on Frostbite, and the next Battlefield game likely will be too, or a successor. And there's still fricking Activision and Take 2, clearly no plans to switch to Unreal there.

They’ve only recently started making newer engines such as RE and Bamco’s unannounced named engine. Every studio in Japan has made their own and continued to use them before UE was a thing and even when it grew to immense popularity. It just makes sense and this isn’t a new concept, just them doubling down on what they’re doing like they used to.

You have to realize, as a game company, you cannot rely on a outside engine, as it poses risk. If that company hiked the license rates and royalties, you’d be completely fricked over

Unless your game has hundreds of people working in it there's no point to using a propietary engine. By the end of development your engineers will have modified Unreal so much you're really only using it for the SDK tools since half your workforce is mentally deficient, and otherwise you can only guarantee a quality, creative, unbloated and well performing product by writing things from scratch if you're indie.

      Anonymous

It's even a mess for gamers. All of the UE4 games have huge shader compilation issues and traversal stutters.

Even UE3 games like Arkham Knight has huge issues.

The only good thing about UE is their materials systems. It's more suited for professional design visualization and movie production than video games.

Remember when UE4 was new? For years it was only used by architects to render buildings and interior designs.

The real problem with it is that every team that heavily modifies it doesn't release their changes for the world to see. This would have resulted in each iteration becoming exceptionally good in just several years. But since managers and shareholders are greedy morons the very idea of releasing for free something they have invested money into at some point shuts down their cognitive abilities.
