The story is there if you look for it, but most players are just going to enjoy the actual game part of the game. That's why I like fromsoft. They are similar to Nintendo where it seems like they come up with gameplay mechanics before they even consider lore or story.

Don't listen to that homosexual moron. There are a few different ways you can go about it. Doing the Volcano Manor npc questline gives you a bunch of rewards and allows you to do several NPC invasions where you're the invader, you basically become a hitman in the employ of the Volcano Manor, which eventually leads to the Rykard boss fight. Depending on what you do after the boss, there are a couple of outcomes as well, specifically for two different NPCs.
Alternatively, you can just bum rush the manor through an alternate entrance, get to Rykard, and kill him, but that will lock you out of the Volcano Manor quests. That's usually only the preferred option if you've already done it the "normal" way or are trying to get Rykard's soul ASAP for the Blasphemous Blade.

Make sure you regularly go back to see Patches while you're doing the Volcano Manor quests if you want to progress his quest line as well. You'll miss out on one of the more unique weapons in the game if you don't finish his story

After that he moves to Volcano Manor, you can do a specific quest for him after I think the first two regular assassination quests for the manor. He also gives you an item at some point but as far as I know what you do with it doesn't change anything beyond giving you a few extra lines of dialogue from another NPC

Frick that ending, but it's not actually confirmed why that happened. There are a couple of theories I've heard. One is that Sellen just got too deep into her research into magic and fricked herself up as a result. She was expelled from the Academy for practicing forbidden shit, so that would make sense in my mind. Another theory is that Rennala or Ranni turned her into that weird shit, but I haven't seen any convincing arguments as to why beyond "Ranni is an evil b***h" and "Rennala is crazy"
Ranni did it because she knew sellen was best girl and needed to remove her as an obstacle so that she would be able to achieve best girlness

When you meet Selene in the academy for the final step of her questline, she will stand where Renala is normally saying she took over the academy and she will pledge herself to you once you become Lord etc... and it's when you go back that Renala is back in the center and she is a ball of poop on the side. So... I think she underestimated Renala and got spanked hard.

I fricking love the Cipher Pata, easily my favorite weapon in the game. I did a strength/faith intending to spam the Blasphemous Blade art like a homosexual but I used the Cipher as an early weapon and loved it so much that I abandoned the original build idea
Sekiro and to a lesser extent BB are the only modern From games with decent story telling. Miyazaki's "I'm an ESL who didn't understand books so I wanted to recreate the experience" gimmick has run its course entirely. In otherwise decent games it's just something you ignore. In Elden Ring it's another in a long list of reasons why the game sucks.

If you break it down it's more or less just a retro game excuse plot, yeah. Yadda yadda dark times for the land yadda yadda collect the MaxGuffins to unlock the final dungeon and beat some god dragon.
All the interesting stuff happens in the background/has happened sometime in the backstory, which isn't story.
