This pissed them off so much that a faction of them went into space and created some sort of artificial or weaponized version of the Deacon blood that would create an anti-life organism, but fricked themselves over.
The black goo (evil deacon blood) breaks down your DNA and creates face hugger variants that need to find a host to make a xeno variant. The film series basically just retcons the ayys as being a species and more of a special mutant descendent of an alien called the First Deacon, which presumably looks like "The Deacon" from the end of Prometheus.
