I think they were sort of at a loss as to how to pack more capable hardware into it, and so went with an aesthetic overhaul instead. This is further reinforced by the fact that the new slim is basically the exact same thing, but with a few mm more clearance.

They had to do SOMETHING to differentiate from the 4, anon. Hardware obviously wasn't a huge upgrade, at least, not nearly as drastic as the upgrade that 4 showed over the 3. And a lot of people are taken in by aesthetic design. Same is true in restaurants: the first bite is one you take with your eyes. So, it was about sales. And it works - they wouldn't do it otherwise.
Back during PC vs Mac era, it was PC advertising based on its ability and quality, while Mac advertised based on the lifestyle and aesthetic. Mac won, and proved that you can corner a large portion of your target market with aesthetics alone. And that is why the PS5 looks the way it does.
